I don't particularly think they're bad games, but not very good FF games. I'd say 3 is a bit worse than 2. 2 had quite a good story for a old game from what, '88?

Golden Sun isn't half-bad, but it needs to cut the crap with the Yes/No questions, which make Zubats look like thylacines in comparison.

of course we're using Japanese numbering. "American" numbering doesn't even exist anymore since every game has been re-released with proper numbering

Just comparing between II and III, if you're playing the Famicom versions, then III wins by a mile.

I haven't played any of the modernized versions though. It's quite possible that with some overhauls, the most recent version of II might be better than III.

It's a shame, the DS was capable of beautiful 2D sprites and ugly 3D models, and we end up with games of 3D models most of the time.

There were other things wrong with the IIIDS, but yeah.
IVDS is amazing regardless of the artstyle.

I'm baffled that anyone could see FF3 as anything but the best of the three Famicom/NES Final Fantasies. It's light years ahead of the other two frankly. I guess maaaybe Origins got FF1 close (which DS didn't really do FF3 any favours) but FF3 should still win out with its job system, more consistent challenge, and the fact that it isn't bugged to hell.

FF2, on the other hand... yeah, it's the worst.

I actually have more patience for the stat growth than many, but even then that doesn't excuse the horribly skewed balance. e.g. in Dist Cave, the game's sixth dungeon, you face Hill Gigases, enemies far stronger than anything you will face for literally five dungeons thereafter. There's no plot excuse for this, either, someone was just asleep at the wheel when it came to enemy design in this game.

I don't get all the hating on FF2. A real story, an awesome villain, a level-up system that, while flawed, was about twenty years ahead of its time, and on top of that you get to talk to beavers? What's not to like!

FF3 is the worst for sure.

The "flawed" system makes the game pretty unfun.

Even if you like 2, how is 3 bad?

This may be crazy, but maybe people didn't enjoy constantly needing to turn into frogs or mini-people, etc.
Also, having that ridiculous group dance thing mere minutes after the most tragic part of the story is almost as bad as Aeris & her "LET'S GO HAVE FUN!!"



To this day, the inappropriateness shall haunt me.

2 is good

The flawed system is too unbearable. It just makes the game unplayable to me. I just started FF3 a day or so ago, but I'm already pretty bored of it. Seems like FFV is the first above average game in the series.

I wouldn't call it outright bad... but it kind of has no story. That's a pretty big deal in a Final Fantasy game.

You don't even HEAR about the true villain until 10 minutes before the final boss, and you don't meet the fake villain before then either. The only memorable moment is when you go down to the lower world and Elia bites it... and it's mostly just because of the music.

Basically, FF3 is just the job system. Then in FF5 they added a real game on top of it.

Uh I'm pretty sure the Saga/FFL series used it throughout the 90's. "Ahead of its time", maybe, but not by 20 years. And not a good execution of it, more to the point.

Please tell me this is something from Dissidia. FF2 Emperor is bland as hell and has like three lines. Leon is better (you can at least see hints of an anti-hero that a game with a non-terrible story might have been able to execute well) but still highly unsatisfying.

FF2's plot is bad. It has more of it than FF1/3, yes, but that only makes the game worse, since it means you spend way more time walking back and forth between Altea/Altair and Paloom/Poft/Bofsk/Salamand/Kashuon for like half the game.

The game is broken as soon as you leave the 1st town. Then as soon as you get Minwu/Minh/whatever the hell people decide to call him, You broke the game even harder right in its butthole right there.

Regarding the frog thing, that's just a simple dungeon-entering gimmick (much like, say, getting a key from a certain townsperson) and not really worth noting by the standards of things RPGs pull.

The three mini-dungeons I can more readily see being annoyed by since they actually impact gameplay, though I personally enjoyed them well enough for switching things up and making you (gasp) change jobs in a game which is about job changing!

Ok, I guess Dissidia has influenced my opinion on him, but I played FF2 first and already formed my opinion on him back then.

The deal about the Emperor is that he gets **** done. No tragic pasts or hidden depth, just some insane bastard who literally sold his soul to Satan and enjoys serial killing towns for the lulz. And he completely destroys the "evil emperor's lieutenant is the real villain" cliche - before it even existed. That was what cemented him as a badass villain to me. Usurping GOD in the "sequel" is also quite the notable achievement.

At the time of Final Fantasy III, having "a story" was definitely NOT a major part of Final Fantasy. At that point, quest-driven games outnumbered plot-driven games in the series two to one! At that point, II was the outcast!

You're essentially saying that 2 is superior to 3 in large part because 2's plot matches up better to FUTURE Final Fantasy standards, and to me that's incredibly unfair. 3 did not suddenly "get worse" because the series changed directions later on.

I'm pretty sure the evil emperor ends up as a villain more often than his lieutenant does. Certainly the standing example of the evil empire trope when FF2 came out was Star Wars, and well...

Anyway, past that, I just don't get it. Sure, he gets stuff done, but he himself just.. barely exists (I believe he's only ever seen at the arena and in the whirlwind, while still alive), and I find the "OH I STOLE SATAN'S POWERS" plot point to be more facepalm than anything. Hooray for previously unhinted at powers. Extra bonus hate points for the fact that it torpedos what little hope the endgame plot had of being interesting (the conflict with Leon is magically resolved by evil zombie emperor showing up and being so evil that the PCs and the remaining villain have no choice but to team up!).

Another thing I don't like about... maybe not the emperor, but rather the empire, is how badly they bungled that setting. There's no Palamecia town, and we never meet Palamecian citizens. What does the emperor actually do? How does he rule his country? Do his people like him? Dislike him? Heck, we don't even hear about how Palamecia got on with Fynn and Kasion prior to the game. We get very little sense of his character, as such, beyond "evil". Compare how much better FF6 handled the same idea.

Only thing the emperor is good for is dying hilariously to Blood Swords. I will give the game that, if you make an annoying villain who claims godlike powers, you can at least give me the satisfying experience of watching him lose half of his HP in a single attack.
