WHERE NO TOGEPI HAS GONE BEFORE!
"Oh, my, my, my! A Togepi with scruples!"
Score: 8.5/10

The heroes are walking through a canyon when they see the Pokemon Trainers' Tower. This is, predictably, a trap by Team Rocket, who trick them into falling into a trapdoor and throw them into a prison cell.

An evil-looking Togepi enters the building, however, and starts causing trouble (like eating a banana) - when Team Rocket catches it, it uses teleport to escape. They find a good-looking Togepi, who explains (through Meowth) that Evil Togepi needs to be stopped. Team Rocket agrees to help Good Togepi, who we (as the audience) learn is actually still Evil Togepi.

Evil Togepi slips away and frees the heroes - only to trick them into another trapdoor and send them back into the prison cell. Then it destroys Jessie’s dresses, Meowth’s enormous Giovanni automatic cat-petting robot (?!?), and James’ bottlecaps. Then it frees the heroes again, only to trick them into falling into another trapdoor.
external image
It's Dawn who realizes that Togepi might be up to something. It shows up again, crying, and says it's sorry for getting them trapped again. The heroes decide they were wrong, and literally three seconds after escaping, they fall into another trapdoor.

Togepi tricks Team Rocket into getting trapped with the heroes. Then it pretends to be Good Togepi again, somehow fooling everyone. Fortunately for the episode's pacing, Brock figres out that since Togepi can’t use teleport, it must be using substitution - which means Good Togepi and Evil Togepi are one and the same! At this point, even the heroes can’t misunderstand Evil Togepi’s intentions, so it just uses attract to turn all of the pokemon present into its slaves (Pikachu, Piplup, Croagunk, Meowth, and Yanmega), but Yanmega is unaffected. I love how it takes a while for Jessie to figure out Yanmega must be female, and this point of Yanmega being a girl? Completely irrelevant, it doesn’t even show up again. Togepi and the pokemon escape and turn the elevator off, so everyone takes the emergency stairwell, which is a... surprisingly logical safety mechanism for Team Rocket to have?

Togepi and the pokemon activate the secret spaceship, and we learn that the tower was actually just a way to hide it. When asked why needed a spaceship at all, Jessie and James explain that they’re Team Rocket. And that’s the best explanation we’re going to get, I’m afraid. They quickly reach space, and I, uh, I'm kind of impressed that the Pokemon world has advanced enough technology that a mouse, penguin, frog, cat, and egg can activate a spaceship and set course for "the end of the universe."

The heroes and Team Rocket finally reach the cockpit, so Brock sends out Happiny to use pound to wake everyone up. Togepi just uses attract again, so there's only one possible course of action left: a duel between Happiny and Togepi-- oh wait no, the spaceship is attacked by Rayquaza, who apparently hates the idea of people leaving the planet. And we now learn how Neil Armstrong died in the Pokemon world, I guess.

The impact of the attack wakes all of the pokemon up again and sends the spaceship back toward Earth. The control system goes on the fritz, so James pilots while the pokemon fix the rocket (Pikachu powers the system, Buneary cools the rocket as it reenters the atmosphere using ice beam, and Piplup and Grotle use bubblebeam and energy ball to create and explosion outside of the rocket to stabilize its descent). Happiny and Togepi's duel causes the landing parachute to fail, but Togepi just uses psychic to slow the descent of the entire rocket and save everyone, then just kind of leaves. The end.

I’ve gotta tell you, this episode is stupid, but it’s inventively stupid. It’s really engaging, there’s always something going on, and neither the heroes nor Team Rocket are the focus: it’s all about Evil Togepi, which proves itself to be one of the more competent villains on the show even if its motives were apparently “escape the Earth.”

AN EGG SCRAMBLE!
"The last time I was this terrified, I couldn't get my hair and nails done!"
Score: 3/10

Traveling through an unnamed village, the heroes meet Lyra and her Marill. Lyra is here to advertise HGSS. No, literally, she is literally, in-universe, in Sinnoh so that she can advertise Johto to people. This strikes me like someone in Utah coming to Los Angeles to advertise how awesome a desert of salt and no beer are, but whatever, I guess. And when I “advertise,” I mean there is literally a TV screen that the heroes literally pause to watch a literaly advertisement of the reasons you should visit Johto. It’s as blatant as it can be without saying “Buy HGSS.” Also, for some reason, Lyra thinks Dawn’s name is “Dane,” and this becomes a running gag even though it’s not funny.

Lyra also has a friend, Corey, who’s your generic weak-willed male friend of the spunky girl. He wants to be a pokemon breeder, and is excited to learn that Brock is actually competent at this.

Lyra invites the heroes to watch an exhibition of Johto pokemon, and by “exhibition,” she means “throwing out a Chikorita on stage and challenging Piplup to a fight.” Despite the type advantage, Chikorita loses easily, and Dawn is rewarded with a pokemon egg. Just then, Team Rocket appears. They apparently weren't actually planning on doing anything, but when they see Dawn's egg, they steal it and escape in their balloon, which they promptly crash in a nearby forest. The heroes, Lyra, and Corey follow.

Team Rocket stops in the forest, and there they get attacked by an Ursaring. Jessie gets split up from the others, and shortly thereafter, the heroes find James and Meowth. You might be thinking Jessie will show up again and spring some kind of trap, but no… She literally just doesn’t up again until James and Meowth are defeated and is like “Yeah, I escaped the Ursaring off screen. It was pretty intense.”

Lyra and Corey ask to come along with the heroes for a while to see a pokemon contest and learn more about pokemon breeding, and they of course agree. Just then, Dawn’s egg hatches: it’s a Cyndaquil.

So… This episode is kind of garbage.

Lyra and Khoury (official spelling) aren't nearly as interesting as the creators hoped they are.
Aside from potential romantic tension between the two and their obsession with Johto, the only noteworthy things about them is the female Mario outfit, Lyra's inability to say the word "Dawn", and Khoury being voiced by Kirbopher.

That whole Attract thing is going to become far more important once we reach Unova. For once, the viewers will be informed of the gender of every Pokemon on Ash's team, and battle strategies will keep that in mind.

And then, one of three things will happen. (1) Snivy/Emolga instantly OHKOs the pokemon. (2) The Opponent's pokemon instantly OHKOs Snivy/Emolga after nullifying the attack. (3) Attract doesn't work because the Pokemon is the same gender and an actual battle takes place.

And don't even think I'm kidding about that.

GONE WITH THE WINDWORKS!
"A charged up machine is nice, but a charged up Jessie rules."
Score: 2.5/10

The heroes (joined by Lyra and Corey) have stopped in a forest to feed only their cute pokemon. Screw you, Mamoswine and Grotle. I also like how Cyndaquil snubs Piplup and refuses to have anything to do with it, and then Dawn chews out both of them.

Ash challenges Dawn's Cyndaquil to a battle, and she of course accepts. Ash sends out Grotle, and Cyndaquil proves to be extremely agile. Eventually, Brock calls the battle off. Somehow, Piplup is angry when everyone compliments Cyndaquil and steals the poffin Dawn offers as a reward.

Marill wanders off, and since they're near the Valley Windworks, the heroes enter it to search. They see it, but it accidentally loses them in the hallways. Several Magnemite attack the heroes until they find a sleeping old guard (apparently the only employee in the entire power plant). The old guard calls off the Magnemite, finds Marill using security cameras, and sends the Magnemite with them, and goes back to sleep. Just as they find Marill, the power plant runs out of power, causing the door to the room they’re in to lock down and trap them there.

Team Rocket is trying to siphon electricity to power their newest giant robot, causing a power outage, not that the heroes know that. They try waving at a security camera, but the old guard is still asleep. They spot a ventilation shaft, and while Ash, Corey, and Brock attempt to open it, Lyra does the only logical thing: she speculates on which of the boys she would get married to if she was stuck in this room for the rest of her life with them. Then she asks Dawn who the cutest of the boys is, and when Dawn says she's never thought about it, Lyra is surprised: "I would think that's the first thing you'd be thinking about." Uh… I’ll be the first person to say that I am not a master of reading the opposite gender, but I really doubt that’s what girls think about when they’re in possibly life-and-death situations.

Pikachu volunteers to enter the ventilation shaft and find the guard, so Pikachu, Cyndaquil, and Piplup (who were trapped outside of the room to begin with) run to find him. Team Rocket attacks them with deadly... nets, but fortunately the Magnemite save them.

Meanwhile, the heroes try to open the locked door using their pokemon, but no matter how many Gen II pokemon Lyra sends out, the door won't open. Ash keeps trying, and Lyra thinks his determination is amazing, clearly having a crush on his ability to try to do things. I love how, from the heroes' perspective, nothing is at stake since they don't know Team Rocket is stopping Pikachu from getting the guard, but the music is ultra dramatic and tries to make Ash using a crowbar into a major event. There's also a scene where the heroes, who number five, have seven cookies. When they realize they can't split the cookies into 1.4 each, Lyra decides that she and Dawn each get two cookies because they're girls. Now, see, this I do know girls do, because I’ve seen them do it before. When were were seven and eight, my sister insisted that I lift some heavy boxes for her that we were getting paid to move, and still split the money equally, because it was “man work,” while she played Wordtris on my Game Boy.

Sexistgram, am I right?

Pikachu, Piplup, and Cyndaquil almost reach the guard, but Team Rocket captures Cyndaquil. Fortuantely, Piplup and Pikachu remember they can easily defeat Team Rocket because it's Team Rocket, but Pikachu accidentally causes electrical damage to the power plant... which accidentally causes the door to open and causes no further problems in any way. The heroes and the pokemon reunite, say goodbye to the guard, and leave. Team Rocket’s giant robot has charged by this point, so they attack in a giant Magcargo... which they exhaust after one attack, so Ash blasts them off immediately.

This is one of the worst episodes so far, and my opinion of Lyra and Corey is not high.

Understandable. Khoury's a wimp and Lyra is a total airhead. She's more ditzy than either May or Dawn ever was and they were both pretty durrrrr. It would probably take two Lyras to equal Ash's IQ. Think about that for a minute. 2 Lyras = 1 Ash in intelligence.

Okay, let's discuss the revival of Cyndaquil's popularity in a world that also contains Chikoritas and Totodiles.

All three appeared in the Arceus movie in scenes that Anagram pointedly excised from his review. Dawn has just received a new one thanks to the Johto festival. And this is not going to be the last we hear from the burny mouse this season.
And I don't even remember the thing showing up since that Typhlosion in Legend of Thunder.

Why did they go with the fire starter specifically? I guess Dawn already has a water-type, but she has no grass representative? Or did they think that a Chikorita would reduce the interest in Ash's, assuming that his Cyndaquil was a less interesting character?

The heroes hear about a wild Gible on Mount Shady, so everyone except Brock heads out (he wants to help a Nurse Joy). As they walk, Lyra asks if Dawn wants to have Corey as her boyfriend. Seriously, I know Lyra is a girl, but that doesn’t mean her only personality trait must be “thinks about boys” - I’m pretty sure girls think about other stuff too, sometimes. I assume. The heroes quickly find the Gible, and Ash instantly wants to catch it-- so Corey decides he must catch it instead. What a dick.

They send out Buizel and Totodile, each hoping to catch it first, but Gible just kicks both their asses and escapes. Thus, they split into Ash/Lyra and Dawn/Corey to look for it, Lyra thinking that Dawn and Corey make a cute couple. Seriously bro, get a new personality trait. Even something like “likes hats” would be okay.

Well, Ash and Lyra find Gible and then fail to catch it. Corey's plan is using fishing rods... in a field of grass. He somehow catches Dawn's Piplup. Then Dawn somehow catches her own Piplup. After Ash fails again, he joins Corey with the fishing rods, and somehow it works… but Gible escapes again. Lyra also manages to go a whole five more minutes without thinking about boys.

They all team up, and when Ash and Dawn start arguing, Lyra realizes that she and Corey might sound like that - which means possible boyfriend candicacy?! They enter a cave, but quickly get separated. Lyra calls Corey and demands a rescue, so he rescues her and she complains he's late. Corey then finds the others and finds an exit, so Lyra talks about how awesome Corey is. Cool, I guess?

Gible greets them as they exit, so Corey insists on fighting it first. Gible and Totodile get into a rock crushing contest, and Gible wins, but the effort takes so much out of it that rather than fight, it just wants to escape. Corey’s not about let weakened prey escape from him, though, so he has Totodile knock it out and catches it.

I seriously dislike Lyra and Corey now. They’re legitimately annoying.

Who are these Lyra and Corey people, and why do they sound so awful? I missed their introduction.

They are literally walking advertisements for HGSS. Lyra is the female player character, Corey is some dude, and they are joining the heroes for a while so they can use their incredibly interesting Marrill, Girafarig, and Totodile.

Lyra and Khoury are lame but their run culminates in something reasonably cool
