Board 8 > I finally finished Final Fantasy XIII

Like with XII I got bored of it midway through my first playthrough, and with XII on a replay with a bit more time and effort I began to appreciate its nuances, its a much better game when you scratch the surface.

XIII didn't quite work out like that. I did appreciate the intelligence of the battle system and surprisingly I was ok with the maps. Everything doesn't seem quite so linear when you're looking to grind off every mob and collect every treasure. Challenge level was very good, it generally kept you on your toes.
Characters didn't stand up great to a replay, they initially made a strong impression on me but most of them lacked the kind of depth and conviction that usually becomes apparent with a bit of scrutiny. Plot confused me the first time like with X, in X though on a 2nd play through everything clicked into place. Here, very little did and a lot of the characters I was supposed to care about I honestly wasn't sure who they were, the whole fal'cie, cie'th and l'cie concepts made sense now but they weren't especially endearing plot elements.

The common complaints of no gameplay variety and bad pacing were my main gripes. It appeared shorter than I was expecting too. Game itself was uncharacteristically shallow for a FF in many ways, the whole mission thing and revisiting old areas seems very tacked on. I wonder if this had its development time cut, feels unfinished. Disappointing but still fun

Pretty good ranking. Only thing that sticks out like a sore thumb for me is my well-known hatred of X-2. Otherwise, not too terribly far from mine.

I actually think I may genuinely like FFI more than FFXIII too. XIII's got a better battle system but the charm and not-convoluted-failure of the first Final Fantasy is appreciated.

I got to the final boss and got my ass kicked a couple of times and had to grind some

but it was the end of winter break so I just youtube'd the ending and said I'd finish it later >_>

13 is fine, not sure why there's a bunch of hate for it.

The lore is pretty good and the characters aren't bad per se but it feels like there's just so damn little going on. The number of turns in the plot are remarkably few (I get that it was kind of a point on the developers' part but it simply doesn't work for me) and the writing really doesn't do it for me.

Bundle in the fact that the lore is so badly executed that you basically have to look online for the inside scoop on so much of what 'happens' or doesn't happen in the game and you've got a mess on your hands.

it drags and the story is convoluted and you have to read it up on your own and some of the characters suck and are wasted potential

Short version: Lightning > All

Long Version:

I've never played a FF where my favourite character has been so utterly clear the entire way through. Lightning has the most fleshed out background, most interesting character, best lines and best development by a long shot. Great character that dare I say would have deserved to be in a better game.

I get the feeling like we never really got to know the real Snow. I like his concept of a laid back rebel, leader of his crew, freedom fighting or just doing whatever. Seems like the handsome rogue type playing by his own rules and having his pick of all the girls. But the Snow we see for the entire game is in the context of him mourning the loss of Serah and all his actions see to be dictated by this loss and desire to get her back. Made him a bit linear and annoying frankly and the marriage plotline was a bit soft for my liking. Felt like punching him every time he took out that tear, I'm glad light did on a few occasions.
I feel like he's a really cool character that we were never given a chance to see because of the games context.

Sazh was clearly designed as the comic relief dude but his jokes just never really worked. He seemed to be written badly if the aim was to have him as a sharp tongued funky cat. Like Snow I like the design and idea of his character but his dialogue was awful, his serious moment of realisation with vanille was one of the better moments in the game but that was as good as it got for him. His chocobo quickly got really irritating.

Fang is someone I'd imagine a lot of people like but was just too obnoxious for my tastes. A far more in control character and less shallow than the rest but just not someone who appealed to me for whatever reason.

Vanille was essentially diet Selphie. Airheaded and never on the same wavelength as everyone else, she was one of the better written characters because she probably portrayed something close to what the designers wanted her to be. I liked her offbeat enthusiasm but her monologues were really bad attempts at insight. Seemed to be a darker side to her that she was fronting against which made he interesting but again rarely showed up in the plot.

oh my god Hope, awful character. Started off as insufferably whiny before gradually turning into someone more determined and optimistic. My problem with this was his character progression was far too obvious, his later personality felt an obnoxious attempt to make the player believe he had "grown" so much over the game. Felt very artificial.


I'd probably rank them.

Unlikely, theres a trophy for all items in the game that I wouldn't even know how to begin to track. I'm definitely going to try to max level everyone and finish all the missions.

I was interested in Lightning at first since I do like cool girls, but she's way too much of an obvious "strong soldier" that tries her very hardest to be bitter.

I agree with some aspects there

Snow was wasted Potential. He had a awesome coat, a badass bandana beenie thing, and punched things to death while riding a cool bike made of women
but ...he never got past the "I'm a hero who will save everyone no wait I can't INSTANT DEVELOPMENT" thing

and yea, Sazh being the comic relief felted tacted on. if the Frocobo was the comic relief and Sazh was the badass older mentor, it would've been more of a balance. but I still like Sazh as is

Hope was annoying and stupid. They kept forcing him on your team cause they knew you wouldn't use him otherwise. his development was so cliche and boring. Yes, he "Grew up" but it doesn't stop him from being..well...annoying and stupid.

But I agree on Lightning, she was a great character. I feel like Snow needs his own game or something, so we can really have a chance to have fun with his character. And obviously Hope is horrific. I liked Vanille, she's got a lot going on under the Selphie-like exterior. And Sazh wasn't bad imo, some of his dialog didn't come off very good, but it's a FF. There's bound to be some crap dialog.

I think they just should have started the story at a different point and condensed the plot we know into an arc rather than the whole thing. The game felt very tunneled because of it, didn't give the well rounded view of characters we're used to in Final Fantasys. Even if they just integrated the whole 13 days thing into the game rather than as flashbacks it'd have added so much flesh to everything before the l'cie arc began.
