X-2 had fun gameplay, but the rest of the game was pretty underwhelming. And reviews of FFXII and FFXIII have kept me away from them. I even own Final Fantasy XII and still have never gotten around to giving it a try.
Also, there's something about having the turn-based thing in Final Fantasy rather than action-oriented that's just more charming.

This topic is a response to watching my fiancee play through all of Final Fantasy X and now through Final Fantasy IX. She loves them to death and really enjoys the RPG-style, loves how charming yet emotional the stories are, and enjoys how it's not as stressful to actually play as other games.

The thing that gives me hope is that XII and XIII were never trying to copy previous final fantasys, they were trying things in their own right that were mostly new and different. They didn't quite work as well as they'd like but I couldn't call the franchise down and out either. If they were making poor mans FFVII's that'd be a sure sign of unrepairable trouble but they've got the ideas and creativity, they just aren't working.
What would worry me is the existence of FFXIII-2, rather than sticking to their guns and insisting on the merits of linearity they've seemingly accepted the grave mistakes they've made and pandered to their audiences criticism. Not that I'd agree with them if they did hold their ground but better be captain of a ship off course steering everyone safely to the wrong place than in charge of a sinking vessel on the correct route.
if square completely crashes and burns but doesn't go out of business, just comes very close, maybe. as it is now? after sakaguchi left the marketing heads started acting as shadow directors, they will never make a good game under those circumstances.

Is there direct evidence of this?

The generally accepted golden age is VI - X, you could add IV in there but the badness of V breaks it up.
This is what Smurf actually believes.

Final Fantasy in general is just a terrible series. Terrible dialogue, poor character development, mediocre plots (VII's is pretty solid though), push-A-to-win gameplay... just awful. I still don't understand why this franchise has such a following.
Final Fantasy I is a novelty that's still fun to play, but III (NES) and V are the only ones that hold up today from a gameplay perspective, i.e. what actually matters.

XIII and its sequel both topped VIII and IX pretty easily, and I'd even put XIII over VII but that's mostly because I favour gameplay over plot. So uh I guess so.

XII is ****ing awesome. People always, and pretty much only, complain about the gambit system. I must have played the game wrong cause the only gambits I used were 'Attack the same foe' and 'Heal when HP <'. It was awesome, I still got to put in commands when and how I wanted and the battles were still fast paced. I love XII.
