saveus_maria: i was considering either posting nothing or just responding to a couple people and then letting it die, but no i actually want to associate with the uncultured swine of the board. god knows why. i should ask xiii to rally a bunch of people to post in this topic.

bigpun9999: i barely talk at all in b8anime because 1) i rarely watch anime and 2) that chat is replete with wonderfully exciting users like superangelo128, swirldude, and chrono1219. also, you've never really done anything for me to take an interest in you personally, other than making a lot of bad life decisions and summarily informing the board about the bad decisions you just made.

dante: not nearly enough and i hope i can experience more of your alistar play in the future. you're still not quite as good as meisnewbie, though - that guy can strategically headbutt people out of my attacks with miraculous consistency. speaking of which, have you played much lately? i haven't for weeks. it's one of the off phases, i guess. they happen and then i get back after a few months and start marathoning again.

mcbonesii: bored and a little tired, but it's the kind of tired where i'm too lazy to do anything productive yet not sleepy enough to go to bed. that's the worst kind and, naturally, the most common. i won't ask you how you are because i don't really care, but feel free to enlighten me.

I haven't played since pre-nautilus - a combination of a lot of bad internet and just having no desire to play. I'm sure I'll get back into it eventually, and learn how to not only headbutt people out of attacks but also into more strategic teamfighting positions. I'd also like to learn trist for similar reasons, but alas her knockback is on a much longer cooldown.

saveus_maria: going to be entering a phd program for pure mathematics, which means something is deeply wrong with me. i was complaining about upenn because the open house itself was really poorly organized (lots of needless walking; not much useful info; current students giving their personal opinions when no one asked for them), but i liked the school. they also offered a pretty good financial package, so i decided i'll be going there. turned down assorted other schools in the northeastern us for various reasons. some seemed stiff and unwelcoming, while others just didn't seem to have strong programs.

ermine: yo. what have you been up to? also, since i always curious - tell me about curling. i remember watching it at the olympics a couple of times (lol), but i don't really know the specifics. seemed kind of cool.

koala: april fool's is great in principle but often botched in execution. gamefaqs' pranks are always pathetic, and even stunts like google's, which the board is gushing over, don't really grab me. on the other hand, newbie always links me to a bunch of random japanese companies who make fake game announcements and the like, and those are pretty good. still, i think it would be better if people spread out their jokes throughout the year instead of putting them all on one day, so they wouldn't be immediately obvious.

the ravioli thing was cute, but man, don't do that.

saveus_maria: be a professor of mathematics and do mathematical research, lol. the idea is to land some kind of academic job, get tenure, and then live in comfort. not the easiest or most efficient way to live in comfort, but this is less boring (to me) than a lot of other things i could be doing.

tsunderes are awful, especially the needlessly and childishly violent kind, and meisnewbie would totally be that kind. they're emotional messes and totally unpleasant to be around. now, in theory you could have a good tsundere character, but pretty much all fiction i've seen writes them with no depth whatsoever, and without anything to transcend the archetype they're just plain bad.

now yanderes are adorable. i enjoy characters who are passionate about something and know what they want, and in particular i really dig the idea of making sacrifices for love - this character type takes that to the logical extreme. there's something about murder that's just cute, you know? so yeah, no question.

drak: you're the stodgy kuudere who never wants to try anything new until everyone else drags you into it, and then you end up liking it as much as anyone (no i have not brought this up enough yet). better than the lesser two but nothing on attempted murder.

you are bad because you don't practice enough. symphonic rain had some quote along the lines of 'failing to practice for one day will set you back three,' which might have been the only good thing to come out of symphonic rain. constantly leaving and then getting back to something usually isn't good for sustained progress. play more (and it's not like i'm going to bug you to contribute to projects if you're playing th).

nio: man, what am i supposed to do with this. i asked for a lead-in so we'd have something to talk about! uh, what's up, i guess? also yeah you're the hyperactive girl who's really into fighting games for some reason.

ed: i totally missed that post because i had just made one of my own. was wondering why you jumped into the topic apropos of nothing to banter with saveus_maria, but i figured you'd been put up to it.

anyway, katawa shoujo is godawful. hilariously bad prose, drama worse than you see on soap operas, flat characterization, main character who alternates between being incredibly bland and incredibly whiny, etc. also the portrayal of arrhythmia is inconsistent and not entirely accurate (i know since i have a family member with it lol). still need to read shizune's route, but that's apparently one of the worse ones, so...

Not a bad ranking. I read pretty much the whole thing today. I think the flat characterization point is pretty accurate. The drama in each route (sans Shizune which has only a little drama to speak of and nothing that really happens in it) is only really superficial. Like they looked in a manual what all the requisite parts were for a VN arc without actually doing very much to bring them to life.

And the prose wasn't just bad, it was so inconsistent. Like Shizunes route used a pretty consistent syntax and then all of a sudden in emi the guy decides he wants to be pretentious mcdouchebag and start using fancy words for no reason despite the level of actual writing being pretty low.Like it was written by a high school senior struggling with his English classes.

Aside from the writing, the uneveness of the visual presentation was hysterically bad. Like the different characters, especially if you throw in the side characters like Emis mom and the Nurse and its like characters from 6 different anime met up in a single VN. The photo backgrounds are kinda cheesy too and the sounds were horrible.

I thought the portrayal of all the heroines disabilities aside from blindness and deafness which arent exactly rocket science was way overblown and unrealistic.

Easily the worst feature length VN I've played.

ed: i heard that different people wrote different routes, or something. would explain (but not excuse) inconsistencies. i'm not sure if you were around when everyone was raving about it, but it was really off-putting - like these guys had never read a good work of fiction before. i know some people who like it HAVE done so, which makes it all the more confusing. was going to post a rant in the ks topic after i'd finished it, but it was so bad i never got to reading the last route. should do that sometime.

dante: umineko 8 at least has more character. and better music. also, neither of these is even the worst vn i've read! that would be muv-luv. highly recommended if you're trying to work up the motivation to commit suicide.

saveus_maria: she doesn't have super senses, but among other things she puts a blindfold on the main character to have blind sex with him, which almost gives him a heart attack. what a great novel.

EDIT: First of all :(. I'm not that bad.

Shizune's route is only bad if youre LOOKING for an overblown cheesy soap opera. Its biggest strength is actually its /lack/ of action. But yes it is really off-putting. I know zea at least admits to thinking its not actually all that good, hes just formed some sort of emotional bond with emi. I dont understand HOW because theres not a ton there in my opinion but thats what's clouding his judgement. I dont know what Mac's excuse is but at least he didnt literally give it a 10.

And yeah he has heart attacks so inconsistently. He can have one walking up a hill or completely miss one despite putting in endless hours of manual labor. Plus like you said I am like 90 % sure a heart arythmia doesn't mean "super susceptible to heart attacks" and nothing else like they made it seem.

Clearly the way to deal with this is to read some shuffle. KS has actually made me hunger for a better Vn immediately which is kind of rare. I was considering muv-luv, or maybe skipping round in Shuffle to see if there was much that got left out of the TV adaptation. Also considering going for an entirely random choice on vndb. Any suggestions?

ed: most people like muv-luv alternative, but you have to get through the considerably less well-received extra and unlimited to reach it (as i'm sure you know). i thought extra was downright terrible, but your mileage may vary - you're probably more tolerant of inane slice of life than i am. i would suggest looking at screenshots before trying it because the art is hilariously bad.

now i wasn't a fan of alternative either, but i'm nearly alone in that so i won't go into detail about my opinion there. though keep in mind (this is more universal) that it's really, really long and doesn't pick up for a while. on the upside, it's the highest-rated game on vndb by a wide margin, for whatever that's worth. i keep telling newbie to read it so i have another opinion but he's too busy reading japanese-only vns and informing us all of how very great and japanese they are.

i think you've already read most of what i consider good, so i don't really have other suggestions. if we're talking about navel, i very much want oretsuba to get translated, but it's extremely long and difficult. don't have high hopes (there were some rumors that it was being negotiated for a while back, but i haven't heard anything on the subject since)

ctes: pretty well. things are kind of uneventful right now because i'm on break until august, but it's nice to have a free schedule. i get to decide what i want to do and when i want to do it.

luis: haha not at all. going there made me realize just how important it was to have decent internet, respectable housing, clean water, constitutional rights (the police presence there was rather intimidating, especially after the metro bombings), etc. and grocery stores that don't refuse to sell you some of their merchandise. the one perk: our hostel was so bad that my room cost a mere $110 per month. now that's something.

when i was previewing this i realized that i listed internet before all those other things, which is probably going to raise eyebrows but actually fits my set of priorities, so i'm leaving it that way.
