At this point the most interesting stories are

1. Joffrey's continued downward spiral. Tyrion brought up the Mad King but he didn't lose it until later in age; Joffrey is like 16. Not a good sign for the people but great for people like me who love great villains.

2. Everything with the Iron Islands. Theon and his father, the weird sister, THE IRON PRICE. everything about them is intriguing and compelling. Theon choosing family guilt over the ties of friendship. THE IRON MUTHA F'ING PRICE. I could watch them do anything. Theon vs his Dad in a game of chess....THIS PAWN JUST PAID THE IRON PRICE!!!

3. Dany's path to the Iron Throne. She has the ability to get people to trust and follow her anywhere. Unbeknownst to Renly And his 100000, Stanis and his God, Joffrey and his crown, or Robb and his strategies, this is the greatest power of all: the ability to lead people by the sheer power of will. Her people don't fight for her out of fear or promises of wealth, they do it because they believe in her wholeheartedly; she is their God. And it's not just the Dothraki; anyone who comes into contact with her will be swayed by her presence. She has been to the bottom, whereas everyone else has lived the life of privilege. She wants it more because for her there is nothing else.

But in the end, the main difference is that Dany truly believes in her destiny and is the only one with good reason to do so. Everyone else only began to think about the throne because they were told to once Robert died. They want it, they think they deserve it. Dany NEEDS it. Being the Last Dragon is what helped her escape her imprisonment, without it she is just another weak girl.

Joff is supposed to be 12 at the start of the books, 13 at this point after his name day.

Though all the other kids in the show were aged up three years (all the Stark kids) so he may be aged up in the show. And the actor is 18 I think.

They all have to be to keep the same age gaps. Robert's Rebellion was also pushed back by as many years since many of their births matter when they happened relative to it.

I think it's mostly because they obviously needed someone 18 to play Daenerys in the first season, and the timing of her birth is very important.

Not only do you come off as pointlessly cynical, but you also seem to be unable to grasp character development.

The guy making daughters from his daughters is cartoony. The soldiers at Harrenhall are cartoony in their villainy. The men in the cage headed to the wall who threaten Arya are cartoony.

Joffrey has been built up to this. Everything he does has a point, nothing for spits and giggles. He has always rejected other peoples ideas and hated being told what to do. This is normal for a teenager but it is compounded by the fact that he has been told since birth he will be king and has been constantly reminded of his superiority over others. His "role models" are an apathetic Jaime Lannister who rarely ever speaks to Joffrey( seriously do they have one scene together), Robert Baratheon who is a drunkard womanizer who publicly embarrasses his mother, and Cersei who trains him to take everything he wants and disregard how it affects others.

Alec hit the point I was leaning towards: everytime Joffrey is humiliated or made to feel weak he takes it out on someone else because he was trained to believe kings listened to no one and did whatever the hell they wanted. His mother embarrasses him when he brings up Robs bastards so he takes it out on the weakest people of all: the babies. He shows Sansa her fathers head because he needs to show everyone how dominant he is now that he's king. Robb stark keeps defeating him so he takes it out on Sansa. Tyrion embarrasses him so he takes it out on the whores.

Hell, we haven't even gotten into whether Cersei's dominant, over bearing attitude has given Joffrey a complex with women. What teenager gets a girl like Sansa and doesn't try and hit it or gets dealt two whores and instead of sex, sees them as a way to gain power back. Joffrey has got some serious issues and his character has surpassed Dany as the shows best...

This kinda ignores how his brother Tommen was raised pretty much the same way and still turned out a super nice boy (yes, Cersei tried to instill the same sense of superiority in him). Joffrey was a douche long before Robert died, and yet Tommen was still pretty nice. Some people are just born nasty, regardless of how they're raised.

I do agree with the idea that Joffrey was born with a certain imbalance in his brain, but it could be argued that Tommen isn't as big a douche because he wasn't raised to be king. He's next in line (technically), but he likely wouldn't be king until very old age, like Prince Harry.

The most likely event is that he wouldn't be king at all. Westerosi line of succession goes to sons first, then brothers.

Actually daughters might normally get a crack at it before brothers, too. I always get confused on that detail.

In Dorne: Sons/daughters, then brothers/sisters. Which means if Joffrey has children, it's them first, then Myrcella and her children, then Tommen.

Outside Dorne: Sons, then brothers. Which means it's Joffrey, then his sons, then Tommen.

There's a minor part in the books that confuses me about Westerosi line of succession with regards to daughters versus brothers. It's quite possible I didn't understand the relationships correctly. However, it also seems unnecessary for Stannis to have to name Renly as his successor if brothers have priority over daughters.

But it's of no real consequence to the Tommen example.

I don't think it was really a statement of offering to literally name Renly his heir as much as saying Renly can still be his heir and all will be forgiven rather than him beheading Renly for going against him

Joffrey's little brother was never told he was going to be king from what we've seen. Little brother usually don't hold that esteemed role. He isn't hounded by the same relentless pressures we've seen Cersei shove on Joffrey. He is treated in the same pompous manner Cersei presses on her entire family, but nothing to the level of Joffrey. He's Also too young; he hasn't hit the testosterone fueled confusion of puberty.

Also, for the last time, no one is born bad or good because they're human concepts we made up to rationalize the world around us. It would be like being born with the concept of time or what unicorns are. Nature can make you black or white, tall or short, fast or slow, but it is nurture that makes us sadistic teenagers who get off on the suffering of hot red heads with daddy issues.

My biggest quandary is this: how long can Tyrion keep this up? Joffrey was his first miss but he's been flawless everywhere else. How much longer can this last? He has a whore cleaning for Sansa, a spy on his sister, and Littlefinger HATES anyone getting over on him. Eventually this has to come crashing down, right?

there's no concrete evidence that one side of nature vs. nurture is correct

you have your opinion, i have mine

i think it's a little of both, but mostly nature

there are plenty of murderers that came from perfectly well adjusted families, and none of them were promised that they would be king

...well, can't say I was expecting Renly to die so soon. I guess it makes sense though; no real reason for Renly and Robb not to align otherwise, which probably wouldn't make for such a compelling story.

Jaqen is pretty awesome; wonder who else Arya is going to have killed? I doubt the next two will be as inconsequential as the torturer.

I will ONLY be talking about Dany for this week.

We've finally reached that point, the one I've been waiting for. When I made my comments about Dany's "power" in this Game of Thrones I didn't think it would come so soon. Dany is like the ugly girl who got hot but doesn't realize just how hot she is. She's unaware of her power but is slowly learning.

What makes it so entertaining is that EVERYONE else can see it. Every person she comes into contact with, every person who spends the smallest amount of time in her presence, is caught in the cataclysm of her personality. Vash the Stampede can suck it, Dany Targ is the Human Typhoon, and she leaves a trail of bodies in her wake.

Her servants fight over who can please her the most, her soldiers obey her without question and with the utmost loyalty(Could Khal Drogo get those guys NOT to steal if he wanted? They might fight him to the death over it.), rich and powerful men are willing to give half their fortunes to marry her and be apart of her world, her "Advisor" is so dedicated that he actually said these words

"I look at you and can't believe you're real."

When she gets to Westeros I feel bad for everyone vying for power because she gains it so easily. Jorah is right, people in Westeros will give her whatever she wants, I can't see them ever saying no. They, like everyone else, will be caught in the turbulent zephyrs of her personality.

Love, Love, Love this episode. Theon's backstabbing is making me sad though :(

Just watched the episode, expected a mixed bag given the reviews I read and was very pleasantly surprised! Now, non-book readers might've lost a bit here and there (due to the many plotlines ongoing at the same time), but as a book reader, that was an absolute delight! Probably my second favourite episode yet after What is Dead May Never Die. Arya/Tywin was a glorious addition, and I really liked Stannis/Davos too (Dillane and Cunningham are killing it!).
