Wow. Each episode this season has gotten progressively better. Loved the scenes with Tyrion telling his plan to the Pycelle, Varys, and LF (though disappointed by LF's reaction). Theon scenes were really well done too. And Margaery my god

Stannis and Renly are more alike than they look.

They have the most awkward sex ever.

Did the Arya scene take place at some random shack in the books? I seem to recall that differently... I might just be misremembering though it's been so long since I read them.

It happened at a random abandoned holdfast. Just a random walled in place with a stable and a barn and a hall where people could hole up if they were attacked. Was a bit more of a battle.

Cheaper to do it this way, and I'd rather see the budget go elsewhere.

They were in some holdfast or something. It was a place they had to storm and I think light on fire to get root them out.

Also, the subsequent capturing of the various people happened after they escaped from here, and thus didn't know where they came from. And I don't think Lorch was even looking for Gendry himself to begin with (he's on the warpath, not reporting to King's Landing).

Edit: Too slow.

Arya and Yoren have pretty much been the MVPs of this season for me. Littlefinger continues to be portrayed in a manner that concerns me, and at this point, I'm starting to think it's going to end up sticking, unfortunately.

Still, best episode of the season so far IMO.

Episode was definitely the best of the season so far, and things are falling along nicely! I was a bit worried that non-book readers might not have caught on everything, but apparently everything's fine, so that's good. Thoughts on the episode:

*The good*
+ Dat end scene. Holy crap. Can't recall if that conversation between Arya and Yoren was in the books. I don't think it was, but in any event, that was bloody fantastic! Extremely well written, extremely well acted. Yoren's a badass, that is all.
+ I'd also like to mention that Maisie Williams is doing an amazing job as Arya. The subtle gleam in her eyes when she's talking to Yoren - you can tell she's hurt, but she doesn't overplay it. Very well done.
+ First half of Tyrion's master plan was clever. I was wondering how they'd adapt the scene without taking, like, half of the episode (in the books, there are actually three completely separate convos with Pycelle, LF and Varys). The editing was really clever and worked really well.
+ Theon scenes were great! I liked his bitter comeback against his dad - you can tell he hit a weak spot there, and both actors did exceedingly well. They also cut off a relatively minor character in there, which was a good call IMO.
+ Dayum Brienne. That woman is TALL. Great casting! Renly was incredibly awkward (which I guess is what they were aiming for, so heh). Although in terms of awkwardness, he's got nothing on Sansa. These scenes were painful to watch (not in a bad way... it was just incredibly awkward).
+ No Dany, no Robb, no Jaime, no Stannis/Melisandre/Davos. Seems like they learned to focus on a few characters. That is good. More screentime per characters means a better episode. And it paid off amazingly well with Arya (I'd trade a Dany-desert scene for that convo with Yoren any day).

*The bad*
- North of the wall is still a bit heh. I won't hold this against them, since they don't have a lot to work with, but I think opening up with Renly, Catelyn and Brienne might have been a better idea. Who knows.
- I don't care one bit about Sam.
- I also don't care one bit about Bran (though that's not the fault of the writers).
- Second half of Tyrion's master plan didn't work out so well. "Chop off his manhood and feed it to the goats" was hilarious in the books, but the whole goats thing wasn't introduced in the series yet (I think? If it was, it was like a season ago) though, so I'm not too sure the line would work that well for non-book readers.
- Littlefinger UGH. Why must they keep ruining his character episode after episode? It seems they're aiming for some kind of pathetic comic relief niche, and that doesn't fit well. TV-Littlefinger was really wearing his emotions on his sleeve this episode - you can tell he's overwhelmed at the prospect of being Lord of Harrenhal, but why the hell state that so overtly? Same thing with him being pissed at Tyrion - the scene and the writing itself were good, the acting was not. LF would have been a bit more subdued, maybe self-deprecating, than outright pissed. Maybe I'm too hard on Gillen (and the writers), but I don't like what they're doing with him.

I agree that Arya scenes have been consistently good this season.

> Yoren/Gold cloak with the dagger
> Arya/Hot Pie: "Because he's got armour on"
> Arya/Gendry "As M'lady commands"
> Arya/Yoren convo
> Yoren/Lorch battle scene

Let's hope the trend continues!

I'm pretty sure Littlefinger actually was outright pissed during the equivalent scene in the books. It was one of the few times he wasn't that subtle.

Strongly disagree, you might want to go back and re-read the two scenes in question. The dialogue between Tyrion and Baelish in the former scene is pretty much word for word. You talk about subtlety when in the books her bursts into laughter and is described as having a face like a boy who bit into a honeycomb. The second scene is slightly more underplayed in the books, but it didn't seem remotely out of character for me for him to be angry. It's not like he was shouting and raging about it. (I want to address something that happens later but it's spoilers so I shan't)

As for comic relief I have absolutely no idea where you got that from in the episode, or the previous episode for that matter.

Also, to reiterate to people

Or the political map...

Renly (Lord of the Stormlands - Yellow) married Margaery Tyrell (daughter of Lord of the Reach - Green) to get that alliance going.

Stannis controls Dragonstone which was a big Targaryen stronghold but which doesn't have many vassals and thus can not call on as many men.

Dorne (Orange at bottom) and the Vale (white on right) are neutral, and are the ones Tyrion wanted to marry Myrcella into.

My bad. Reread the first scene in the book, and the writing for the episode was indeed pretty much identical. Still didn't seem like Littlefinger, though, so I think it might've been Gillen himself. I know I sound like a broken record and an annoying "Waaaah waaaah they changed the character now it sucks waaaaah" guy, but there's something that's not working. Maybe it's the voice, maybe it's the general posture or acting style, but yeah. When Gillen says "In one stroke, you'd make me a great lord", for instance, it seems like it's an epiphany, something he's just realized (and that is obviously not the case - I'm sure he figured out exactly what that would mean the very second Tyrion said 'Harrenhal'), whereas book-Littlefinger would be saying that more as a tease or a provocation. [As for the comic relief thing, I was meaning in a 'butt monkey' kind of way, what with the scene with Cersei in the first episode of the season.]

Oh well, let's cut it there - it was a great episode and since I apparently remembered the scene incorrectly, I'll admit that I was the one in the wrong and stop plaguing the topic with these rants.

Game of thrones does female characters better than any show I've ever seen. It's not even close. I thought they peeked with Arya Cersei Dany Caitlyn but now we've got Theon's sister, Brienne(spelled right?), Sansa stepped up, and Marg.

We get to peer behind Cersei's facade once again and it speaks about what I said on the last page: being sent to Robert broke her. Remove her status and all that and she's just another married women in a bad relationship for her family. Did you also notice how her threats to Tyrion held no weight. Strong he is.

Then there's Sansa. I've never felt this bad for a character since Bubbles. She is being tortured daily by the people who killed your dad. That scene at the table was just awful. Literally hurt to watch. Sansa has stepped up her acting and her next scene was perfect.

Everything on the Iron Island is friggin great. The Iron Price has become a massive hit in my social circle. Meet a hot girl but she has a crap personality or a fat friend: pay the iron price.

Finally we get Renly's camp and holy crap that's cool. From his wife's revelation to Brienne to Caitlyns constant awesomeness, everything there just worked.

no Dany and Joffrey needs to be fixed. I need petulance, I need enemies screaming, I need babies murdered and heads chopped off, I need Amelia Clark naked with dragons on her chest!!!

great episode and i have to echo that great ending scene especially the dialogue with Yoren and Arya

it's one of those things that i'm also totally fine with them having to change stuff from the books

also loved the scenes at Pyke and i was actually choking up a bit when Theon had his outburst with Balon

while i kinda have the same sentiments as Solfadore with LF's treatment (he's my favorite character, actually), i think the only big misstep they've had with him was in the first episode of this season when he threw Cersei's incestuous relationship in her face

his scene in episode two with Ros showed enough superficial care and it segued smoothly into a threat that wasn't totally a threat

it also reminded me of his scene back in S1 telling Sansa about the Cleganes in that it was told in a light enough way that was still creepy

his reactions in this episode was already covered

and he had great scenes back in S1 so i still give the showrunners enough leeway and with the way they've managed to stick to the important plotlines in the book, they can't really ruin the character!
