I don't think I need to do these anymore. ctes might be the only person who hasn't read or watched Bleach, so here's for you boy! Kurosaki Ichigo is blessed (or cursed) with seeing ghosts, and then one day a big old mean ghost attacks him and his family. A person called a Shinigami (or Soul Reaper, if that's your flavor) and attempts to save him. She gets injured trying and then in order to defeat the big demon, called a Hollow, he has to temporarily borrow her powers. The process can't be reversed immediately as she has to heal up and stuff, and the story kicks off from there as the Soul Reaper, Rukia, teaches him about the Shinigami world and how to protect the people from the evil Hollows. Story Very cool, at least for a long time. Starts off with great small arcs that pepper the main characters with simple, but effective backstory without falling into the melodrama lots of these shounens tend to do (coughfairytailcough), and then explodes into huge ones once you stat getting comfortable. The whole Soul Society arc had me gripped man; so many characters get introduced, the protagonist actually has a compelling motivation and is facing a dire situation, and the plot twists that get thrown at you, it was great. Even as it got into Hueco Mundo, it felt like there was so much more to explore, and then....it ends. There wasn't much more to explore. Huge build-up for characters that just ended up with demises you could have predicted. Resolutions clean but without theme. The recent stuff has been pretty boring too. Where has the writing and pacing gone? Sure, Bleach was always kinda silly and had a style over substance thing going on, but it managed to do basic storytelling and make it exciting! Bleach has been without...soul lately. Yet I can't turn my back on it so easily with how great it was for the first half. And this final arc has hope yet. Characters Mixed bag. Not because there are bad and good characters, but because of how good characters can be poorly utilized. Ichigo's friends never seem to amount to anything, and all the cool Soul Society crew show up way too often even though what made them cool was ultimately very shallow. Urahara is awesome, Rukia is mostly awesome, Ichigo plays his part well, though he lacks depth, and Aizen is the best villain ever. Also Kenpachi is amazing. Chad, Orihime, and Ishida constantly get the shaft just so Hitsugaya and Byakuya can give you sultry stares. Blech. And what the hell was with Ginjo? So dumb, but as this is a review for the entire series, I'm not going to rant about was just a small percentage of chapters in the end. Art Yeah, if it wasn't for this, Bleach might not be worth reading. But it is! Because he is a man of amazing talent and style. Huge panels with characters that never stray from their models and are always drawn as impeccably as if it were a color spread. His characters look varied and always great, from the pretty boys to the manly men, and the women from A cup to EE or however big Rangiku is. When over half your cast wears the same outfit, you damn well better design their heads and body structure well. Kubo is not a man that merely draws. He directs. The panels are all chosen to maximize the style and cool factor, with angles and wideshots and closeups all used effectively, a visual treat all around. It's why I can't imagine people actually considering the anime close to as good as the manga, where actual thought is given to why the angle is viewing the character a certain way when they say a certain thing. He can make the most mundane conversation sound like the coolest thing in the world is going down, and it's all due to the way he creates manga. The good is that despite being a series largely about people with swords, it's as far from the truth as possible. Thanks to the now iconic BANKAI, every character is capable of extremely varied fighting styles. Everyone manages to actually have an interesting power that reflects their personality and makes for a fine spectacle. When you add Hollowfication and Fullbrings into the equation, it just gets better and better. But then the bad. Much like Reborn, fights aren't really about trading blows, and more about looking cool talking before you reveal why you're going to win and then KO your opponent in one turn. Sometimes you fail and then the opponent will talk about why he was the one that was gonna win after all and KO you. Repeat a few more times until a winner is reached, and that's how the fights tend to go. A shounen connoisseur needs more than cool looking attacks to be satisfied. He wants the fight to feel like...well, a fight! One-sided affairs are only cool every now and then, and attacks need to have strategic value. At their best, fights represent a clashing of ideals and wills, and the fight is not just to deliver thrills but a vehicle for the story. Bleach hardly reaches these levels. Story: B Characters: B+ Art: A+ Action: B- Overall: B+ I'm not hopeful for the future, but hopefully it can stay a B+. Time for the third Fairy Tail OVA. Oh and there really is a filler arc in Fairy Tail coming up now. Key of the Starry Sky arc. Five episode titles revealed so far, one has aired.
