That's what bothers me the most about Dragonball Z. Okay... wish for immortality. You can still get killed. Should be wishing for invincibility/invulnerability.

Unless I'm missing something.

Am I?

I guess invincibility doesn't protect you from dying of old age or something.

The show Supernatural deals with this briefly.

SPOILERS I GUESS
There is someone who discovers a way to become immortal, but his body is constantly degrading so he has to steal working body parts from living people to keep himself functional. So you can cut him up and stuff, but he'll still be alive and you can put him back together if you fix him, aka he will go blind from his eyes getting old, but then he can surgically remove eyes from a living person and put them in himself and that's how he continues "functioning". He will always be alive though.

Sometimes the two are used interchangeably. They can mean the same thing, like in DBZ.

Immortal, by definition, means that you cannot be killed. It does not necessarily make you invulnerable to harm however.

I'm not sure if that's 100% true though, at least since many if not most stories with immortals feature some one way to kill them or something. Even gods.

As I said, I've always thought of immortals as those who can't die by natural causes but can still be shot in the head and killed (or any harmful act such as that). While invincibility/invulnerability means you can't be killed by others but you can still die by natural causes... I guess.

Sort of the opposite of the way fantasy usually deals with it. See: elves in LotR. They're immortal because they won't die of natural causes, won't age or get sick, but they can be killed by physical harm.

Also immortality doesn't mean non aging by default. Even if you don't die from old age, your body will eventually become so old, it can't do anything because it wasn't designed to exist for so long.

But eh, I can only speak for us puny humans. Sayians, etc are different from us.

Precisely. That's how I have always viewed immortality.

Isn't that basically the same thing? They live forever, but they can still be killed (been a long time since I watched it).

Of course I did bring this up because of DBZ, but it's still a genuine concept that I'm interested in discussing. Obviously there has been no immortals in real life, so it's essentially just a fictional concept only. Which means it can be altered.

You bring up a good point though. If puny humans were to discover immortality, it could turn out to be worse than death. Living as an old, decaying person that can't do anything, but forever unable to die. Eesh. That is partly why I would never wish for immortality. Mainly because I see no reason to even WANT to live forever. It's stupid. Life only means something because of the short time we have with it. You get infinite time and it'd probably get boring and very lonely.

I would never ever wish for immortality.

Well immortal, literally, means "not mortal", meaning that whoever is immortal cannot dies, because otherwise they would be mortal. Hard to kill, yes, but mortal.

It's not true immortality unless you can't die.

Yeah technically immortality would necessitate the inability to die by any cause, but that would be boring in fiction so they just make it "natural" immortality.

At first glance, her costume just looks like typical JRPG silliness. Heavy plate on her arms, but all she covers her body with is a light sundress. Totally ridiculous, right?

But she, like many of the characters in the game, is immortal. So if someone stabs her through the chest, it won't kill her. But if someone cut her arm off, she'd just be stuck living forever with a missing arm. So it actually makes sense that she'd only be interested in protecting her extremities.

This doesn't make any sense to me. The reason people die of old age is because components of their body have worn down enough that it can't support them anymore. So what are you getting if you're immortal but your body still ages? Does that just mean the vital parts of your body (heart, brain, etc.) will never wear down? That's just goofy.
