Q: As you know, we love our hockey here. And it remains the only other pro sport that allows fighting. Curious as to your thoughts on fighting in hockey?

A: I'm not a big hockey fan. But I respect how talented you have to be to play hockey. Soccer? That's a whole other ball. Can't stand soccer. It's the least-talented sport on Earth. There's a reason three-year-olds can play soccer. When you're playing a game when the net is that big and the score is 3-1 (and that's a blowout) are you kidding me? You know how untalented you have to be to score three times when the net is that big?

Now back to hockey. You have guys on skates with crooked sticks and you have to hit a puck into a net that's the same size as the goalie. And at any time someone could take your head right off your shoulders and it's perfectly legal. That's a real sport that takes real talent, speed and all the things you need to be a real athlete. Now fighting is a part of hockey and has been since Day 1. It's part of the game. It is what it is. I think we live in a world now where everything has been so *****-fied. When I grew up we didn't wear helmets when we rode our bikes. We didn't have car seats. We didn't have all this stuff. Now things are safer and we should be safer but let's not go overboard. Fighting's a part of hockey. Period.

He would have been right if that's what he meant. But he didn't mean athlete - he meant sports figure - or rather, the best at what he did. As far as pure athleticism go, his statement would be right. But he's not smart enough to think on that level.

Hockey is definitely a possibility. Tennis is definitely up there in regards to talent and athleticism, too. I'd be inclined to agree about auto racing.

Yeah that makes sense, but HW being bad is true across the board. Has anything relevant happened in any heavyweight division of any sport since Tyson?

True, it's just much more evident in MMA. You see two bad heavyweight boxers with bad cardio and you see them hugging with glancing arm blows. You see two bad heavyweight MMA fighters with bad cardio and you think they're napping.

Well, you're right and ... you're wrong. The UFC is where it's at because of White, and is not on Network TV. It's at a healthy growth rate ... my guess is that at some point, Fox will tell them "Look, we've got a good thing going, now it's time for you to shut the hell up."

What he says in response to that will define MMA's future, really. He's certainly SLOWING growth, but not preventing it.

my point is that there is a ceiling for how popular an organization run by someone who is constantly publicly offending people is going to get. he might be responsible for it growing, but if he did not say crap like this all the time it would probably be in an even better spot. there is going to come a time where someone's gotta tell him to shut up.

as for the lack of really big athletes in fighting sports, i'm guessing that the niche for over-six-foot athletes is getting taken over by the NBA/NFL. now what's really puzzling is the lack of talent for guys 6'10'' or above in the NBA...

I really think the sport would benefit from a Cruiserweight Division at 225 or 230 to replace Heavyweight entirely. The list of great heavyweights in the sport's (admittedly short) history who couldn't possibly make weight in such a division is very slim, it would give bigger LHWs another option without fearing getting smothered by a man 60 pounds heavier, and it would (literally) trim the fat.

actually i don't see why you couldn't just remove the weight limit on heavyweight and make it an actual heavyweight division. in boxing the unlimited weight champions are like 250lb and not fat at all.

I don't even think it needs to replace HW entirely. There WILL be bigger guys who WILL eventually be technically gifted. I'd love to have cruiserweight (think: Velasquez, JDS, Fedor, Jon Jones, Thiago Silva, etc) and also heavyweight (think: Carwin, Mir, Big Nog, etc) ... just devote a lot less main card space to heavyweight and stop paying them all so damn much when they're just not that good. The problem is that people like to watch big men. I think they can market the cruiserweight division well enough to make it a cash cow.

And LHW is so flush with talent, it wouldn't die off by losing some of those guys.

So you're saying that Heavyweight should just be 206-to-Infinity pounds?

That doesn't really solve anything. There are really no Super Heavyweights out there that are worth a damn.

Yeah but cruiserweight is needed, because the jump is from LHW (205 pounds) straight to heavyweight (265). Sure, the talent is there to overcome, like JDS being the champion now and Frankie Edgar being the champ at LW before that, but it will likely eventually be a problem. I'm thinking 225 or 230. And then sure, make the HW unlimited .. we don't have to worry about (more) bulbous guys in there because the UFC only signs who they want
