http://www.arena.net/blog/mike-obrien-on-microtransactions-in-guild-wars-2
In Guild Wars 2 we have three currencies: gold, karma, and gems. Gold is the common in-game currency. Karma, which players earn in-game but cannot trade, is used for unique rewards. And gems are the currency thats bought and used to purchase microtransactions. We have a new player-driven market that allows players to trade gold for gems and gems for gold. If you want something, whether its an in-game item or a microtransaction, you ultimately have two ways to get it: you can play to earn gold or you can use money to buy gems. We think thats important, because it lets more players participate on a level playing field, whether they use their free time or their disposable income to do it. Oh boy. -- No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck. ... Copied to Clipboard!

So long as they don't pull the dumb tactics that most F2P games pull these days, it should be fine. If they don't make gold prohibitively hard to come by or limit the amount you can gain per day through normal means, then there's nothing to complain about.

From: Justin_Crossing | #002 I'm fine with microtransactions but this allows any player to become the richest person on the server by paying real money. I guess GW2 is a bit different in that gear supposedly doesn't matter much. Maybe gold will just be nearly useless. -- No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I don't care since the best equipment can't be bought for gold.

This would be a valid complaint if this also did not apply to every MMO ever. There's always going to be real-world trading. From: Ayuyu | #006 So what can gold be used for? Since it's starting to seem like gold is useless if all equipment is relatively on par with each other. If gold doesn't have some important use then all that's going to happen is that the Gold:Gem conversion rate is going to be enormous and make it effectively impossible to get gems without paying real money anyway. -- No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck. ... From: agesboy | #008 The last MMO I played was 6 years ago and it was small enough where RMT wasn't a huge issue, so I'm probably a bit out of touch here. Just going with my kneejerk reaction here. I was assuming all of the microtransactions would be for unimportant things like cosmetic items, more character slots, name changes, etc, but seeing it affecting the economy has me a bit concerned. Perhaps it'll work out. -- No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck. ... Copied to Clipboard!

My first thought: "What is there to RMT in GW? Isn't all max level (which is pretty damn easy to get) gear completely identical aside from how they look in GW anyways?"
Yup. So essentially a way to buy nicer looking armor. And you can't even use it on PvP exclusive stuff. -- assert(!hotterThan(foo, "Hot Nymphomaniacal Lesbian Mind-Controlling Dominatrix Fairy Doctors with glasses")) ... Copied to Clipboard!
