What's this delivery charge? Is that a tip? If not, what does it cover, and who does it go to?

Goes to the store, the driver gets zero of it.

Tip at least 3 bucks regardless or how much you spent, and if you are kind of far from the store give 5.

Or suffer the consequences.

Delivery charge isn't the tip. It's something most (but not all) pizza places tack on just for delivering. Probably helps with gas.

Oh, yeah, it doesn't go to the driver at all. That's right.

I always tip five personally. I don't order delivery often though so I feel more liberal about it when I do.

delivery charge pays the restaurant to send out an employee to your house and give him gas. Restaurants started doing it because they realized they can price their menu items cheaper and just tack on an extra charge.

tip is for his service.

EDIT: It costs them more money to deliver the food to you, so they charge you more. I like it because I get take-out anyway(f*** tips)

everyone else in the topic basically covered it, but yeah. what essentially has happened is that pizza companies started lowering the prices on everything and charging a little bit extra for delivery. this way, only customers who are ordering pizza need to pay the extra amount that it costs to reimburse employees for gas and people who come to the store to pick their own food up get to save a little bit (plus it looks nice to be able to advertise the lower prices).

tip is separate from that and of course should be paid.

I usually tip whatever makes my bill "on the dollar". Always a minimum of $4 and sometimes up to $7 or $8 if I can land on a 5 or 0. It's always on the lower end if they charge me for delivery though.

I always pay debit and I just like looking at flat numbers.

I only do that in restaurants cause I'm too lazy for the waitress to come and give me my bill.

Though more often than not it means I give way too much tip since I usually pay around 12 bucks in restaurants.

Yeah, I do that when I'm paying debit, but if I'm at a place where I'm paying cash I'm not about to leave nickels, dimes, and pennies for the server to pick up!

oh, it's dominoes? yeah, I can be a bit more specific. I had a friend who worked there for quite a while and at least in this area they have actually had a problem where it was hard to find people to fill management positions because the delivery drivers were making more on tips than the assistant managers made (ie nobody wanted a promotion because they would be taking less money to do more work).

so yeah, don't feel too bad if you don't give a massive tip but on the other hand it's still a good idea to at least give something.

It really depends on how much you ordered. If it's just one pizza being brought down the street (less than a mile), then $2-3. If you ordered a couple of pizzas and some soda, or there's a little more distance, $3-$4. If you're at the edge of their delivery zone, $5. If you ordered a lot of pizza, then 20% tip.

ha yeah used to work at one. Delivery charge definitely doesn't go to the driver in that case. Yeah $3 is a good place to start. I usually tip 3 and change or 4 and change when ordering for just myself. Generally the consensus with drivers is no top = customer goes on unwritten non-tipper list >_>, up to a dollar is s***, 1-2 is mediocre, 2-3 is decent, 3+ is good/considerate, 5+ is excellent (talking orders up to $20 or 30, higher tips for larger orders obviously)

Since we're all here and talking about tipping, I have a really important question to ask you Americans.

What is a good tip for a $10-15 meal in America? Assuming you're at a restaurant. What about a $20 meal?

I don't know what the problem is, but I usually tip between $4-5 in the first case, and around $5 in the second, yet my server never seems to appreciate it. It's ****ing weird. Whenever I eat out in Canada the server always seems really grateful no matter what the tip, yet the few times I've eaten out in the States they just seem indifferent, which is really weird for someone in their position. Is that just normal over there?

I mean I know there are stereotypes about blacks AND Canadians in regards to tipping, so I could see them making assumptions BEFORE I pay and just being rude... but I don't see why I can't get a smile and a "Thanks" after I pay. It honestly really bothers me.

Also, I always tip between 10-30%, depending on the service. If my meal is $7, I feel in shame in leaving a $1-2 tip

I've heard both 15 and 20% touted as good "average" tips, skewing 5-10 percent up or down depending on service and circumstances. I usually go for 20% rounded up to whatever makes it an even number. Bit weird not to get a thanks, but not out of the ordinary, since tipping is expected. I WAS gonna be all "that's really weird" but thought about it and can't recall anybody being particularly super grateful over a tip I gave when it was a situation like you described. I think they usually do say thanks, though.

I usually tip around 30-40% in restaurants.

I only ever order a meal and rarely a dessert though, if I had to pay for drinks and stuff I'd go lower since you know, I can't afford it!

My meals usually are around 15$ so I have no problem leaving a 20 a call it a day.

Much simpler for the server too!
