I haven't dine and dashed, never really thought about it. Seems like a really inefficient way to steal food. I have stolen food before in other methods that were far more effective, though.

I've never dine and dashed, no. Never really had the opportunity, actually.

However, I have been regularly sneaking onto the bus without paying for a ticket. Nobody seems to care, so far!

The punishment is so disproportionate to the possible gain that it's simply stupid, even if you had no moral qualms. If you have no morals, you need to commit big crimes, like ponzi schemes, to make it worthwhile on a cost-benefit analysis.

I went to IHOP last month, got some pancakes, ate them, got my bill, and just walked out. I put a bit of money in the donation box, but that's it.

I haven't, but when I worked at a chinese place someone did it to us. The owners were super ****ed and made life hell for us for a few days.

I just did a little bit of research on the matter. On top of what red sox is saying (which I totally agree with, dine and dashing seems like a really "dumb" crime to commit) another deterrent that you might want to hear is that when you do this at a restaurant, your server generally is forced to pay the bill for it. Even in places where it's illegal for the owners to make the employees do that, they basically get forced into a position where they have to pay the bill anyway or risk getting in trouble and losing their jobs (or some weird technicality that I don't really understand since I've never owned or worked at a restaurant).
