2D in the sense of gameplay, not necessarily graphics, if that needed to be said. Been interested in trying something new, and SFxT just really didn't do it for me, nor did the demo of KoF13 I tried.
My favorite current-gen fighters are MvC3/UMvC3 and MK9. If I had to pick out why, I'd say it's probably because the combo systems are fairly open while following some basic rules. Like Marvel has the magic series, ground combos launch to air combos, normals cancel into specials which cancel into hypers which cancel into THCs, hard knockdowns lead to OTG opportunities, etc., while Mortal Kombat has the predefined combo chains for each character and you can generally insert any special move into the chain before the final hit, and it's mostly about controlling the opponent's knockback movement and positioning so you can keep juggling them. Also the timing windows in both games are pretty forgiving. Other fighters have a lot of this one move cancels into this one other move but not anything else, or links in a single frame or two thanks to the frame data and not necessarily true canceling, and it's all arbitrarily different for every character, and to me that's less appealing.
So given that, what might be a game I'd like to try? BlazBlue CS Extend and Phantom Breaker are both new and possibly interesting, and there's Arcana Heart 3 which is a little expensive and Battle Fantasia which is kinda cheap... are any of these worth considering? Is there anything else out that I don't know about?

P.S. Battle Fantasia is terrible.
I'd say Battle Fantasia is an entertaining pickup and play here and there, but that's it. It's not competitive, it's not balanced, it's not well thought-out and it's not tuned at all. Still, it's got charm and quirkiness and I enjoy it. Just don't expect anything more than that.

I've had my eye on Skullgirls for a while but there's been no real word on a date except "soon" and I know how these undated downloadable games can just take forever to finally come out. Between passing certification and getting slotted into one of the very limited release spots, it can take an awful long time.
What's the gameplay on BlazBlue like? Anything it's comparable to?

Arcana Heart 3 is great. I haven't played BlazBlue CS Extend, but CS/CS2 were good, and I doubt Extend f***ed that up. SkullGirls is coming out eventually, and it looks great.
Uhhh, let's see. King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match is on Live Arcade, but you didn't like KoF XIII, so maybe that's not for you either. I'd suggest ou still try the demo, though.
Neo Geo Battle Colisseum is on Live Arcade, too.
