They're also planning for custom combo DLC, there was talk about that on the SRK forums. "Push this button to do a 5 hit combo." This is pretty silly. None of it matters if you're playing for fun with your buddies but the game doesn't seem like it's set up well for tournaments at all.

I'm just annoyed how overpowered grapplers will be with those auto tech/block gems. Most of the cast won't have the mixups to open them up.

There's a huge difference between playing a bad match up and playing against a person who effectively game their characters steroids.

These gems aren't auto-win tier, but they are major advantages just to have the options.

Look, I've already had this same exact argument with the TF2 players on this board.

Keeping any sort of game changing content from your fanbase, or at least skewing the accessibility of it in favor of those with the cash, is terrible for the community. Tournaments will either have them or not, but it won't make a difference because on stage, everyone is playing with the same pieces.

Online will be a trainwreck.

yeah I don't like it either. I'm just describing how I'm gonna approach this. the gems are already in, so I can either

1) stop playing the game
2) buy all the gems to keep up with everyone else
3) not buy the gems and sometimes be at a disadvantage

so far I like the game, it's fun. so I'm not gonna do the first one. I don't wanna spend money on gems, so I won't do the second one. I'll just go with the third option. I might occasionally lose because the other guy had better gems but I can live with that. my main game is 3S, after all! I've played against enough Chuns and Yuns that by now I'm used to all of that. and we'll see how the metagame works out but I doubt SFxT will ever be as lopsided as top tier 3S is even with gems.

Uhh those auto-block and simple command gems have been known about for a WHILE. They're supposed to be for beginners that don't understand the game very well. I can block just fine, I don't need to waste meter on it, especially when I lose a gem slot for it.

there are better versions of them listed in the video which appear to be DLC where the amount of meter they take is entirely negligible

So after looking at every single gem in each video, the Boost Gems actually don't seem that broken, aside from maybe the last two sets (gradual restoration of meter and instant restoration of meter). I mean it's still pretty s***ty that they're DLC but they seem like they could potentially be balanced. The Assist ones are complete bulls*** though and there is absolutely no defense for them

You can easy make 1/8 of a meter stock by whiffing heavys. Hell, you can make that much by blocking fireballs.

Okay so I just watched the video and all I can say is

are you guys f***ing serious?

Sure you can put on a gem that auto-blocks all of your throws and only takes 1/8 meter BUT IT TAKES ALL 3 OF YOUR GEM SPOTS!

Even the one that automatically escapes from every throw and doesn't take ANY meter still takes all of your gems spots. I think in most situations I would actively encourage my opponent to use that gem.

It seems like a lot of people in this topic do not realize that not all gems only take one slot.

I would much rather be near-impervious to attack than get my attack power boosted by 10% for ten seconds after a condition that may or may not occur

So much so that if it were five gems per character and said gem took all five slots it would still be better. The strategic advantages of not having to fear a throw or a poke far outweigh the boosts gems give

Reminds me of 3S in that respect. Say you had to spend 1/8 of your meter in that game, and in exchange you got to automatically block Chun's down medium into super. Now her kara throws and fierces aren't nearly as scary and all it costs you is a little meter each time she tries to make you block low. She's now mid tier at best because you don't have to respect her low game. I'd take it every time, it'd make matches where characters rely on mixups way easier. I suspect the same is gonna be true in SFxT.

Pokes are a bigger deal in this game. Lots of pokes hit confirm into super or really long combos. Get hit by Rolento's down medium, and you're taking a lot more damage from his patriot thing. Yeah an auto block gem would be useful at the right meter cost.
