This shouldn't happen in a random battle unless you're underleveled.

I'm fairly well leveled, almost every role is maxed on most of my characters, but I'll still get into fights with say... one of those big armored lizards, and that takes a good while to get through with relatively no reward.

And then it happens a lot with any of the robot things, or large groups of the heavily armored Psi-Com groups. I mean, even in a battle that I feel goes perfectly (staggering, buffs, good Paradigm switching), I still feel like 2 or 3 minutes is way too long to be spending on a fight, just to end up with no spoils, and 2 or fewer stars, even though I guess those don't really matter.

Anyway, I'm gonna try getting through the Palamecium tonight and see how I feel.

Yeah, a timer appears on only a few boss battles, and even then it's not that hard to finish in time. I mean, maybe it gets you once, but it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Hm, if you're only getting two stars then yeah, the battles are probably taking too long.
I dunno what I would suggest though. You could try starting to upgrade your weapons, that might give you the boost your looking for.
The armored lizards are suppose to be pretty tough. I think they told you that going through Sunleth Waterscape. I think they actually suggested that you try and run past them. You have to stagger them with your RAVs before you can really do any damage. As for PSI-COM and stuff, 2-3 minute battles aren't really all that long. I mean, I'm post game and almost maxed out on my crystarium and I'm just now getting into fights that are really, really fast. Like 30 seconds or less. So I dunno what you expect with that =/

Yeah, armored lizards will take too long unless you get a preemptive strike and stagger them. Preemptive strikes in general would help in speeding things up.

Doom is there so you can't cheese your way through a fight by switching to COM/MED/MED or COM/SEN/MED and leaving the game on for an hour. I imagine it makes low-level/ No Crystarium runs annoying, but at least it has a point, unlike forcing a game over if your leader dies.

Yeah, I think I only had one boss that cast Doom on me, and that was because I was playing ridiculously conservatively, which generally isn't necessary for storyline bosses if you're properly leveled.

just curious, what characters do you guys use?

I use Light/Sazh/Vanille, with Sazh invested a bit in the Sentinel role. It covers all my basis and I like it, but I wouldn't be shocked if there weren't better setups.

At this point in the game, Lightning/Sazh/Fang because Sazh is the only one who has Haste.

Once Hope gets Haste, party switches to Fang/Lightning/Hope.

Sarted out with Lightning/Fang/Sazh but I wanted a better MED/RAV so I switched in Vanille and never looked back. Didn't really need the buffs that bad, and when I did I just used the sprays. Missed Haste a lot though. It was a godsend when Fang finally got it.

I use Snow if I ever need a good Sentinel for a tough fight since that's all he really does better than anyone else.

Thing with Snow is yeah he's got more HP, but just put some HP boosting accessories on Fang and she's better in literally every way.

I rarely ever actually use the Sentinel role and when I do it is usually for a short time while light/vanille heal, so even Sazh does a good enough job at it for my needs.

Yeah, like Crimson said, I don't really care about star ranking at this point, I'd just like to make the fights feel less tedious. I guess my plan when I get home will be to spend all my money on buying components, and then upgrade some weapons.

Honestly, I really want to finish the game, so I appreciate the advice/opinions.

The only thing the drops is upgrade components, and most of those only sell for about 14gil, and I'd rather just use them to upgrade at that point.

Silvercross, here are a few tips for maximizing gil when upgrading weapons:

- 36 Sturdy Bones, Barbed Tails, or Vibrant Oozes will give you a maximum (3x) component multiplier on any weapon or accessory.
- From least to most these are the components with the best Gil => Experience Ratio:
* Superconductor
* Perfect Conductor
* Particle Accelerator
* Ultracompact Reactor

You shouldn't need to buy any Ultracompact Reactors this early on in upgrading though.

And you probably already know this but it might help you to better set up your paradigms.
Class each character is best at:
- Lightning : Ravager
- Fang : Commando
- Vanille : Saboteur
- Sazh : Synergist
- Snow : Sentinel
- Hope : Medic

But of course each character can be well suited to multiple roles. Those are just what everyone is suppose to be "best" at. This info was pretty helpful to me as I was playing.

It's alright. Certainly not the best upgrade system, but it's not awful. It'd be nice if you got better materials more consistently (1 EXP stuff no thanks), but once you start getting EXP boosts it's good.

Even though hes an inferior character from a gameplay point of view, i liked snows design and would've totally made him work for me if i liked him more but he was pretty disappointing as a character storywise imo.
Either way ill understand if someone likes him BUT putting him over Fang is absurd!

Fang is actually my least favorite character in the main cast....nothing wrong with her, really, just her style and demeanor kind of turn me off. I like Snow, but I definitely wanted Light/Sazh and Snow just was not a good fit there (and I feel like his three mains are tough to fit in any group optimally) so I went with Vanille.

Fang just never really grabbed my attention. I do moderately like the rest of the cast, but Fang I just never cared for.


But all that really matters in FFXIII's character ranking is Sazh >>>>>> the rest >>>>>>>>>>>> Hope

I really really liked this game about 5 hours in

then 5 hours later I still wandered around on some parts with 2 party members and felt like an incredible chore

then my party finally got back together and I haven't played the game since. Dunno why, just forgot about it I guess
