I really liked you for about 10 hours, and I really like your story. I think I'm going to watch a Lets Play or something to see what happens.

But I just CAN'T keep playing you. 7 minutes for a trash fight that gives me 100 experience just doesn't cut it. And if I have to run around in a party of 2 people ever again, I will scream at an eagle until it dies.

I had the same problem with the game. Well, hated the battle system more than anything else but the story and characters were not strong enough to make me keep going.

If you're on the Palamecium, once you get your party together in full for the first time, you won't have to split up into parties of 2 ever again.

It's also when you get to pick your own party.

I actually really like the character interactions and story and stuff. But like I said, my problem is that the normal encounters just drag on and on and on, and I never feel like my character is getting any stronger.

FFXIII combat gets really good once you are used to it.

It's a rare combat system where you actually feel like you're almost always doing something or at least plotting your next move in real time. No time waiting for your turn to swing. I like to feel like I'm thinking about the fight while I'm fighting.

Maybe it's because I can't really track the damage numbers that I'm seeing since the battles are usually kind of a cluster****, but I keep feeling like the trash battles are getting longer and longer, even though I'm getting stronger, so I just feel like I'm getting weaker. I don't know.

I have literally, 4 unequipped weapons to sell that should net me around 10k. I have never purchased anything from the shop and I have 26k saved up from selling other stuff.

But things in the store are like 30k, which means I'll be able to buy one thing and then I assume I'll have to save up for another 15 hours or something.

Yeah, I know I'm whining a lot, but each time I do, you guys are coming back with reasons for me to continue and I like that.

Yeah, I don't feel this way at all really. Most fights at this point for me have turned to *switch into debuff/buff mode* *switch back to combat mode* *press A for 3 minutes while I wait for everything to die*

Enemies are definitely getting tougher at the game goes along, but it's not hard to me to notice the growth in my own characters as well.

Don't enemies drop random junk that's totally useless and only good to sell for cash or am I just thinking of FFXII? I was thinking FFXIII had stuff like that, too, though.

I'm on Chapter 6 and I pretty much have no money. Usually that problem goes away later on in most games, but the shops in FFXIII almost don't seem worth it.

And I agree that battles can take too long, but I still don't really mind it. I find the paradigm system to be pretty fun, and switching between roles in battle is something I haven't seen in a game before.

Truth be told, you don't need to buy much from the stores early on. I'm playing through it right now, too, and I don't have much money either. I think it was a bad call to have enemies not drop gil -- one of the fixes in XIII-2. You'll be able to upgrade weapons soon, so that'll give you a nice power increase.

Those two party moments can be augh, though. Sazh/Vanille just isn't an ideal setup.

Yeah, maybe it was the uselessness of shops that made me feel like I didn't really have money problems.

Totes.

I mean, usually fights are taking about 1 to 2 minutes, but there's the occasional 5 minute or 7 minute fight. I'm at the point where I'm having more fun running past stuff and watching the story progress.

Maybe I'm just not using the right Paradigms, but I feel like debuffing/buffing and then switching to COM/RAV/RAV until they're staggered and going all out, is what I'm supposed to be doing. I can't see what I could be doing differently that would speed fights up. In 2 person groups, it's worse, but uh, knowing that I won't have to deal with that again is nice.

the paradigm system is my favorite part of XIII and XIII-2. I like having to pay attention to battles and not spam 1 button and take a nap haha.

the game is awful in general, horrid button mash auto battle combat pretty much "HOW WELL CAN YOU CHANGE Class/"
Oh man he is going to use quake ! Better switch to Sen/sen/sen to take less damage! seriously no skill at all is required in this game.
oh god then the awful characters, and horrid pacing, and terrible plot. Oh and if you're not doing a NCU run, the game is practically more of a grind feast than the earlier games!. Oh wait it's still a grind feast cause you need more money!. Which means the combat just gets sooo repetitive it's really boring. Like Sure all FF combat can get repetitive but at least when i was grinding in FFX or IX, I was bored to death. i was just semi-bored. because the awesome battle music and the fact that leveling in those games were interesting aka (FFX Cacutuar needs + Auto phoenix Trick).

fighting random battles

^There's your problem.

I just ran past all the enemies because the random battles drag on too much and I'd only get overleveled from it anyway. The battle system really isn't that fun, but the boss fights are good... until they drop a Doom timer on you because you take too long. That killed me more than anything else when I played it. What a stupid idea to have most bosses on time limits.

I also didn't care for the combat system, noticed the money issues and wasn't attached enough to the characters/story to continue as well. I think I got slightly farther then Silver as well. So I think that point of the game is just pretty ugh. Everyone says it gets really good around chapter 9 but getting there kinda blows.

Yeah, I'm finding myself wondering why you seem to be having so much trouble with random encounters.
I mean sure, I died a couple of times throughout the course of the game and had some difficult random battles, but generally random encounters shouldn't give you too much trouble. Have you been hitting max/near on your crystarium before each expansion? That's about where you should be level wise.

As for the shops. Just don't sweat it. You don't need to buy much at all. The only thing I bought for pretty much the whole game was a few phoenix downs and a few potions, plus a couple of each of the antidote type items. It's not really until you want to start upgrading weapons (and even then, not until the later stages of the weapons) that you have to actually start buying components and stuff. And if you're going for Treasure Hunter, but that's just post game extra trophy leg work.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the story though. I liked it and thought it was pretty interesting. If you have any questions about it later on I'd be happy to explain. Some things can be confusing if you don't read the datalog. And some things are confusing even if you do read the datalog lol. But yeah, keep going at least until your party gets together and you've got a little more freedom. I'll admit that the way they handled some of the beginning elements wasn't the greatest, but it really gets fun once you can finally choose your own party and all the classes open up. You're almost there!

FFXIII is one of my favorite games, so I say bah to all the haters.

I always thought it was kinda weird that people said the game gets better once it "opens up". It never really "opens up" beyond letting you choose your party members. And maybe it is just me, but once the game opens up the story/character interactions become really confusing/boring...though that may be because I have played through the first half twice.

look at alpha gamer over here. overcompensating for something?

The only time i would get DOOM'D, outside of summons, is during the time i was trying to figure out a strategy for attacus while fighting him with a horribly underleveled team. Never encountered that problem anywhere else!
