Eating McDonalds every day is definitely more harmful than smoking every day. Prob more harmful than smoking a pack a day. This is providing that you're eating at least one full meal, though I do think the "McDonalds every day" thing is more along the lines of the movie, Super Size Me, which implies that they're referring to eating three McDonalds meals a day. One for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Anyway, this would be entertaining if the editor in me didn't rage at the fact that a statement was said as opposed to issued.

Some people legitimately think McDonald's food is the best thing on earth in terms of deliciousness. Maybe they wouldn't willingly eat McDonald's EVERY day, but I wouldn't say it's a stretch to say that people would voluntarily change up McDonald's for things that are just as bad for you (Taco Bell, Burger King, etc.)

Smoking provides enjoyment at the expense of health.
Fast food provides satisfaction to a need (hunger), enjoyment and/or convenience, at the expense of health (although there are healthy options now).

I don't get the "what about fast food" argument. I see fast food as having more of a purpose than smoking. And let's not forget that McDonald's has salads and stuff too, so it's not all bad stuff.

What are the healthy options for fast food? The last part, "McDonalds has salads and stuff too, so it's not all bad stuff" is quite illuminating. Their salads are not healthy for you. Their salads are loaded up with sodium and plenty of other things to give you pause.

I mean give your heart pause.

Even their salads are borderline. Their side salad has a really low caloric content but also has nearly no nutritional value other than filling space in your internal acid sack. Some of the salads (like the Premium Bacon Ranch Salad with Crispy Chicken - which is also the most delicious-sounding of the salads there) are flat-out bad for you, with a third of your daily fat and saturated fat coming from it, not to mention 870 grams of sodium.

Of course if you get a salad without any of the meat on it they seem to be pretty on the level, but who goes to McDonald's to not eat meat?

What are the healthy options for fast food?

They are limited, but oatmeal is another, and I know Burger King has milk as an option instead of soda for their kids meals. I think both have an option of apple slices instead of fries.

Again, it is all limited, because there isn't a huge demand for it. People go to fast food places to get food fast, not necessarily for healthy options.

Oh wow I hadn't even checked out the dressings. Those are all awful for you.

And people will most likely be sucking down at least 20 ounces of soda while they're eating these things, too. So really, somebody who orders a salad at McDonald's will be taking in around 900 calories, getting half of their fat and nearly 75% of their sodium, all in one meal. Sure, it's healthier than getting a double Quarter Pounder, but it's still terrible for you.

Yeah but that hardly is enough to REALLY say there's options, don't you think? You said fast food is there to do away with hunger, at the expense of health, but there are healthy options available. How does milk help the fact that a hamburger half the size of one you'd make at home has double the calories, trans fat and sodium of that aforementioned homemade burger? Probably closer to triple or quadruple the latter two. Oatmeal is oatmeal - it's fast food at home. Oatmeal and milk doesn't really mean "options." To me, options implies there are now healthy ways to get meals in the same vein as fast food.

I'm pretty sure you could get away with eating McDonalds every day as long as you were very careful with the other stuff you ate during the day. Careful to the point where the only other thing you're eating that day is like an instant breakfast, a vitamin, and a piece of fruit, but yeah.

I know that wasn't the point I'm just saying!

Again, I think the spirit of saying "eating McDonalds every day" implies eating it all day like Super Size Me. That being said, you're still denying your body plenty of nourishment at eating McDonalds once a day. Vitamins and fruit can't fill the need for actual, factual solid food in your stomach. Ironically, you'd eventually be starved for calories while loading up on sodium and things like that.
