this gen produced the literal wii remote

microsoft could come up with a controller that was just a giant turd log and next gen would still be better by default

In 2 gens, the regular controller will go the way of the arcade stick. A niche control scheme.

That's why PC is the best gaming platform, the next console won't even be more powerful so if you already have a gaming PC you're set for 10 years easily.

Yes. And Sony has patented a tablet controller 2 years ago, so there are chances that all consoles use tablets.

Yay

Heh, it's not only Nintendo's fault if the other 2 companies are stupid enough to go on the same path.

Heck Sony might even have been the first ones to think of a tablet controller.

They've been bleeding money for years. Heck I think for next gen they won't even try to go for a strong console so they can make a profit on every unit sold, because they can't afford it.

I didn't think that was feasible at all, I just want it to happen because sony is a terrible terrible company that consistently mistreats consumers, not only in their gaming division but pretty much throughout the entire company. it's like the scummyness of the RIAA and MPAA is so intense that it can't be contained and just infects anything else that happens to be connected to one of its members, no matter how loose that connection is

Microsoft has been looking into developing a system that would prevent you from playing games you bought used on the next Xbox.

I'm not going to hate on the Wii U's controller just yet. Unlike the Wiimote, it actually has four face buttons, four bumpers/triggers, and two control sticks (or circle pads, whatever). If it's comfortable to hold for hours at a time and if those circle pads feel good (this is my biggest issue), then I don't see what the problem is. The button setup is very similar to that of the 360/PS3, so it shouldn't be challenging or limiting devs the way the Wiimote did.

I actually will agree with that but I really can't see it being comfy, it's basically an oversized DS and I really don't love the feel of handhelds. there's also the problem of nintendo's games themselves, you can say "developers don't NEED to abuse the tablet!" but the wii and DS showed that nintendo will opt for an inferior control scheme to showcase their gimmick when given the option, so what are the odds that a nintendo console finally has good third party support? the controller potentially being good doesn't matter if no one uses it that way, the wiichuk honestly isn't bad when you have something you can play without motion controls, but those games are few and far between

Well, reports from the beginning have indicated that Wii U's architecture is pretty similar to the 360's. If that's the case, and if the next Xbox ain't too much stronger than Wii U, and if their controllers have all the same buttons, I'd say the odds are at least better than what they had with Wii. Of course, Nintendo also has to treat the third parties well, something I believe they're known for ****ing up.

Good. All reports on the wii u controller have been very positive and it's damn interesting. No surprise Microsoft is interested in the same field, but t Nintendo doesn't use a tablet. There is no chip to really call it that. That's a lot of the issues people have had with it if anything. An actual tablet would be too expensive to bundle with right now, but in 3 years the tech could be financially viable as it turns out quad core chips reduce the cost of one to under a dual core.

As for this though, windows 8 makes this very unsurprising. And they want a real tablet functionality, unlike Nintendo just having a screen with buttons. Fully expect to be able to play with a windows 8 tablet as well as the default controller and a hybrid.

What is everyone so scared about with this tablet? Having a "virtual" control scheme or something? It's got actual buttons, and I doubt Nintendo would just opt to not use them. Everything points to NIntendo trying to make it as comfortable to hold as possible, too.

Assuming best case scenario with the design, the only problems would be the pricing and/or the fact that only one tablet would work per system.

Worse case scenario is that it's actually underutilized and devs just throw maps on there. It'll be like using a larger DS or PSP to play your console. What's the problem? <_<

So much immersion hitting x to open a menu and pick an item. If the ds has taught us anything it's that another screen can be damn useful. You have buttons. Occasionally you use the screen to solve puzzles or for your menu or as a zoom feature. It getting backlash is just silly.

To look at it...occasionally? I didn't mean you'd NEVER have to look at it. But you shouldn't have to focus on both screens at once unless the game is badly designed or The World Ends With U. For example, it's a map, HUD, or inventory, which is going to be the most common scenario, you're not going to be focusing on it intently every thirty seconds.

I dunno, when I play my 3DS I don't rage about it "breaking immersion" when I have to switch down to the bottom screen in Ocarina of Time to mess with my inventory any more than I do when I hit Tab on Skryim to wade through all of the iron daggers clogging up my inventory.

Like... Say you're playing metroid prime. You have all the buttons and analog actual buttons like the classic controller, to play it. But you're lost.
Hit map.
Look at your screen in your hands. Rotate the 3d map around with your hand, zoom in, out, even leave little notes. Go back to your game knowing the way quicker and better than the old way.

Or switch armor or weapons with it. Or graze bullets in shmups more due to the closeness.
Seriously not seeing the problem if it's comfortable, efficient, and not a battery drain. The middle one basically says need buttons to game right, and with that problem out the way what's there to hate?

Well I have to concede that, but I imagine putting dev time into a big console and not an already wildly successful handheld system would make Nintendo a bit more conservative with their games.

Of course, we don't really know what they'll do with it. I think the only game they have announced is Pikmin 3, which is a game I think everyone can agree can only be improved with tablet controls, given that it's a pseudo-RTS.
