Well I don't completely have the strategy down yet. I beat my friend who is the one that owns the game the last two games in a row by making good use of my 2's, which surprisingly are a much better piece then I thought they would be. But I'm definitely going to try to get people into it so that I can host some tourneys.

I love to have setups with two diagonal rows of bombs in one corner so the enemy thinks my flag is behind all the bombs and nope, it's just chilling on the other side.

Diagonal row of four, 7s behind them to kill the miners that break through, and then another row of bombs behind that for when something comes to kill the 7.

Are you playing with the old-school version where the low numbers win, or one of the newer ones where they reversed the numbers and high numbers win? (In the original, the 9s were scouts, the 8s were miners, the 1 was the field marshall that only got killed by the spy, etc.)


I'm a total boss at Stratego. I always come up with ridiculous board set-ups that completely infuriate my opponent. Nothing's quite as amusing as putting five of your bombs in the very front row of your set-up, leaving you only one space in or out until he finally pulls a miner out of his backfield.

I guess I'm playing the newer version, 10 is the best, 2 is scouts.

Stratego is aight. 9s were my favorite just because of how far they can move. Moving them 1 square at a time towards the 1 was always fun

Are you supposed to remove bombs from the board once they've been activated, or are miners supposed to be the only way to get rid of them? My friend was playing that they are one time use, but now that I've looked up the game a little it appears that the one time use is also a new addition.

Man what? Miners aren't good enough if bombs are one time use imhhho.

That's not a product of the reversed numbers edition either cause the one I played had the strongest as 10 and still had the bombs stay on the board.

Miners were eights, so seven was one notch above that. This strategy would be completely ineffective if bombs were removed. Because bombs aren't bombs, they're minefields. We just call them bombs for simplicity.


Also, I have Ultimate Stratego. Gets some four player action going on. It's an...interesting game. You don't play out your entire side, but can spend a turn playing one of your leftover pieces as a reinforcement into your home area. Flags can move. Bombs are now "cannons" that attack anything exactly three spaces away (without anything between.) Sixes (highest number wins) can move twice in one turn. The game gets *much* more interesting when it's 2v2, but also much less dependent on a single mastermind strategy.

I used to have (and probably still do somewhere) Stratego 4, which from reading this topic is a very different game to the normal version. I always assumed it was the same thing just for four players.

Anyway, I've been messing around in Lego Digital Designer and made a Lego Stratego set.
