and THAT game was pretty bare bones to begin with.
Man devs need to get with the times, you can't do this anymore with fighting games
well anyways, as I've said many times, SCIV was fine the way it was because there were no f***ing fighting games on current gen consoles back then. Unless you counted DoA4 and Def Jam Icon. and I don't. Ugh.
but they actually REMOVED stuff from the sequel. good lord
lets see here, SCV had that crappy story mode where they force characters on you and the game only has one ending
and like I've said in the other topic, the game's cutscenes are done with "Slideshows" but unlike SSFIV and MvC3, the images aren't complete, they're a step up from rough story board draft drawings, they're like stylized sketches,.but I mean, COME ON, color them at the very least. Its also embarrassing how they try to add like, footsteps and various sound effects and stuff as if it WERE animated or in motion.
and to top it all of, they actually, inconsistently, sprinkle actual rendered motion cutscenes into story mode from time to time. I think this is a sign this game was rushed. and yea, story mode doesn't answer anything. it doesn't tell you what happened to Taki, Cassandra, Xiahuanga or whatever her name is, and...well, almost everybody! Ivy makes a Cameo, Siegfried is more of a plot device than anything, and it doesn't explain why Kilik doesn't wield a staff anymore. and the story only kinda revolves around 3 characters, the other new characters only get one scene then they're gone for good. what the f*** is this
now this would been okay if you could pick your character and they have their own story, but NO, JUST this one! <_>
now, if you didn't want to watch endings in SCIV, you could do the tower, which is actually kinda interesting, though somewhat frustrating. SCV however, only had Legendary mode or Legacy mode or somecrap. its basically an arcade mode style run through all of the boss characters on the highest difficulty. in the tower, it took a long time to complete everything and you definitely couldn't do it in one sitting. it made you think and it kept you on your toes. Legacy mode is just 30 minutes of REALLY hard matches. and it gave no indication that I unlocked anything from it, or if I'll get a reward if I do it with other characters.
AND THATS IT
Unless I'm missing something, thats all the game has. I didn't even see a gallery mode. the game doesn't have a shop. The shop was annoying, but you could at least see all of the items that needed to be unlocked. in 5, I have no idea what else I'm supposed to do to earn more creation mode items. we beat the game, beat arcade mode with several people, played several online matches and played several quick play matches (I beat Harada Tekken aw yea).
What else is there? what do I do to get more clothes and s***? I have no clue!
and I dunno, after creating a few characters, i think they actually recycled most of their items too

Don't get me wrong, it plays great, I had fun, and online is definitely the meat of the game, as is with every fighting game but as an actual "game" it somehow is even worse than MvC3
I'm a huge fan of Soul Calibur btw. I played the crap out of 2 way back when (in fact I still play SC2 semi regularly. Best voldo or cassandra in fresno confirmed) but I just don't have it in me to see "SCV" and not think StarCraft
I'm always the one telling my friends that "story doesn't matter in fighting games, etc." when they ***** but man this actually annoyed me when I found out how lacking it was in single player content. At least character endings man come on, no matter how ridiculous they were I at least felt something about the god damn character I was playing.
Obviously, the gameplay seems to be 'better' (for the first few days at least) and more well received than previous games and that's great and all but it's not like more single player content makes it a worse game. What was the point of doing the timeskip if you're not going to fully work with all the new **** that came with it?
again, I had fun with the gameplay and I KNOW the game is meant for competitive play. I KNOW this. I play fighting games ALL of the time for hundreds of hours and s***. The game plays great.
I'm just pointing out how disappointing and lacking the entire thing is, even moreso than the last one, cause the last one was bare bones to begin with.

I disagree, I'd like to know what the characters have accomplished since the last game, what their current goals are, and what happens at the end of their journey. Otherwise you're just a bunch of dudes mindlessly beating each other up with no substance.
at the same time, the standard for FGs in the 90s shouldn't be the standard now either
and to make it worse, this game has a post time skip story and it doesn't explain ANYTHING. sure, its fun having new stuff, but they don't do anything with it outside of the 3 characters.

No, I agree with you. Honestly a big part of why the Soul has been one of my favorite FG series (along with Guilty Gear) is because of its characters. Characters are actually a big part of the reason I like fighters so much which might sound weird considering the genre is full of ones who have about as much depth as random NPCs in RPGs. I just said the "story doesn't matter' line because I have a couple friends who hold fighting game arcade endings to the same standard as 30 hour RPGs. But that doesn't mean I think they shouldn't have a story at all.
Like I said, the time skip does bug me since if they're not going to be doing anything with it, all they did was just end up removing a lot of the fan favorites. I played a mix of X/Sophie/Mina/Yun in the old games and with them all replaced/kicked out of this one, it gives me a chance to find a new main because I don't care about their replacements enough to decide on "maining" them yet. Because I have to like my characters for me to play as them in fighters. And although sometimes this can be accomplished by simply their fighting style, the other stuff was a bigger draw for me. I didn't have a lot of friends who wanted to play fighters with me and the reason why I got interested in the competitive scene was because my attachment to the characters became enough for me to want to see what it'd be like if I dove deeper. But that initial interest was fostered by 'story'.
Also, I feel like they knew where to put their focus on with their rushed deadline.
Like, they obviously wanted to do more... but they got their priorities set straight. If your fighting game has s***ty gameplay now and s***ty online, people aren't going to be happy with it. They focused on that. Reading everyone's story for this game, they actually do have a lot of stuff planned out that is actually pretty interesting. They just, uh... couldn't get to it.
To be completely honest, the ONLY thing that I enjoyed out of the story is the whole Elysium deal. (Not the actual portrayal of it, but rather the idea of it)

Well, I liked the single player story better than SCIV's, and the game is better for playing versus which is why I have it, so I'm satisified with SCV. Only downside is lack of Taki.
