He got stuck at some area in the first level, like he never realized he could pull zippers or something.

That was pretty hilarious to watch though, I never told him what to do.

Oh yeah, my computer has 16 Gigabytes of memory that is made of out of Xbox 360s (each 360 represents 1 bit, on or off, and I link up 16 billion of them) and my monitor is 20 iphone 4s taped together

While obviously gamers do not need to spend anywhere near that much money buying stuff, the real cost of gaming may be accurate, or even low. They did not include the opportunity cost of gaming, and that should be the biggest cost by far. If the cost of each hour of gaming is $20, for example, and you average an hour a day, that's $7300 per year. After 10 years that's $73,000.

$60: For racing, two Microsoft Wireless Speed Wheels for Xbox 360 -- Best Buy
$500: Two BoomChair Sky Lounger Gaming Chairs with built-in speakers, subwoofers and extra-large seating -- Best Buy
$100: Two Xbox 360 Live Subscription Gold Cards -- Amazon.com

Why do I need to buy two of any of these? Especially Xbox Live memberships, what is the point??? They only had me buy one Xbox!

I think I like that $73,000 figure, actually. That'd cover gaming from roughly 15 to 25, for an average of an hour a day. Before that, gaming probably has minimal opportunity cost.

If you start including opportunity costs, you really start going down a slippery slope. Reading (for leisure), movies, TV, sports, hanging out with friends all have the same opportunity costs as gaming. So yeah, you could trade off all fun in your life for an extra $7,300/14,600/21,900/etc. a year, but it's obviously not worth it.

It's obviously not worth it because those things are worth more than the money. It's fine if people think gaming is worth a lot of money too, and I think people really do, despite what they claim, given how much time they put into it.

It's true that there's some amount of work time that maximizes wealth- for example, if you do nothing but work and study, you might actually do less well because you'll be missing important components of life that also help build wealth. And as we get closer to that point, the marginal value of another hour spend working goes down.

But either way, the real cost of being a video gamer is a lot more than what's in that article.

Not to mention the fact that you don't necessarily even have the opportunity to work more hours.

When you are in school, you do have the chance to "work" more hours to get better grades. Working, you get the chance to put in more time/effort to get a promotion faster. If you start a business, that's obviously true again. It's not really about hourly wages, which don't contribute much to expected lifetime income anyway.

Uhh... why is the Cost of opportunity of gaming $20 per hour?

The Cost of Opportunity of one gaming hour would be... one hour doing something else. That hour of doing something else doesn't equate to $20.00 -- unless you decide to skip work to play games, and make $20.00 per hour. Or if someone decided to pay you $20.00 for every free hour you have, as long as it's not spent playing video games (and if so, where can I meet this person?)

It's just an arbitrary guess that seemed in the right ballpark. It's obviously very different from person to person, and even for the same person at different times in his life.

And for how it would actually work, suppose that because of the 3650 hours you have put into gaming over 10 years, your salary is $5,000 less than what it would be otherwise. $5,000*40 years = $200,000 right there. We're dealing with expected values at every stage of course, so for any given person the actual results could diverge wildly from the expected (meaning average, weighted by probability) results.

Red's argument makes sense if you limit it to high school/college/university, or to certain kinds of jobs in which you can put as many hours as you want. E.g. choosing to spend an hour on gaming means one less hour spent on studying (or on relevant professional experience), which could translate into lesser grades and a lesser salary later.

Of course, that is not true for the vast majority of situations. The majority of jobs are limited to, let's say, 40 hours a week. You can't work the additional hour, and if you do, you won't get paid. An additional hour of studying might not help at all if you already achieved the most of your potential already (you can't get more than 100%, for instance, and it's not by studying ten hours that you'll do any better). Similarly, you noted that after a certain time, more hours of work are inefficient and have very little value.

Furthermore, as noted earlier - and I actually think that's the strongest counterargument to your point - you could say that of all leisure activities. Up to a certain point, every hour spent on leisure have an opportunity cost - often the exact same opportunity cost than other activities. If you happen to be someone who likes gaming a whole lot, you could even say that gaming has less of an opportunity cost than reading, because you're getting more fun out of an hour of gaming than an hour of reading, and therefore are happier in life and more productive at work/school. If you want to make the 'opportunity costs' argument for gaming, you have to be ready to make it for all possible leisure activities, which is... not very useful.

We're dealing with expected values at every stage of course, so for any given person the actual results could diverge wildly from the expected (meaning average, weighted by probability) results.

The problem is, you'd have to prove the correlation between that hour of gaming, and the extra $5000 a year salary (not to mention prove that with an extra hour a day, you'd actually be making $5000 more a year)

Many jobs, putting that extra hour in isn't going to get you promoted, or a raise. And some jobs have it where there's only so much you CAN do.

Why are we supposing that that 3650 hours we spend gaming is what contributes to not making $5000 more a year? If you spend an hour gaming, and then an hour watching tv -- that's going to split the time that COULD be spent working (assuming there is in fact work to do)

Well, it's all about expected value. Let's take lawyers as an example. Entry salaries for lawyers are bimodal- there is one peak at $160,000/yr, and below that, very little until you get to $80,000 and below. All you need to get a $2,000/yr expected loss out of this (in line with the $73,000 figure) is for gaming to reduce your chances of getting the higher peak by 2.5%. That's 1 in 40. Not a very high hurdle at all for 10 years' worth of gaming.

Now, most professions won't have as sharp a divide as that, but you can see how we could easily breach that 73k figure even if it makes 0 difference to a majority of people. Concentration of wealth in the hands of the top 1% and all.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've spent less than 17k on games throughout my entire life...counting money that was spent by others on gifts for me.

Like...10 or so consoles/handhelds, often not bought right at launch, so like $200 per system, so $2000.

Some PCs that I was able to use for gaming over the years; but only when there's a game I really want that my current machine can't run. Maybe another $2000.

About 5-20 games per system. Costing anywhere from $5-$60. $3000. Add in PC which is like four more systems, and that's $4200.

Some TVs, and some internets. I've been kind-of cheap here, so like...$1000 or so? Admittedly most people will be higher over their life to date because they won't mooch so much internet; let's say $2000.

Altogether That's about $10k, for 25 years of gaming combined, or about $400 per year.
