I can't get to a bunch of places because my stupid bird can't fly high enough. Every time I want to go up it'll do it for a second and then fall back doing its gliding thing. I dive for a bit and then pull up and it barely does anything.
What am I supposed to be doing?

In a game that babies you through the whole game, you think they would mention something as basic as flying up that I wouldn't have to resort to the manual for!
-- Menji~ Shotgun, BANG. What's up with that thang?
While we're at it, what's the best way to use the bug catching net? I'm trying to get tumbleweeds to upgrade it (I hear this is what you need, how many do I need?) I'm kinda doing a weird right-left-right motion. Is that how it's supposed to be done?

Go from right-to left in a quick, smooth motion. For bugs, walk up slowly and as close as possible, bring the net to your right side, and do the right to left motion.
IIRC you need 3 tumbleweeds to upgrade the net, and there's 1 in a chest in that area. You'll need a lot more later, but I found it a lot easier with the upgraded net.

My rivalry with SuperNiceDog turned out a bit one-sided.
This isn't the problem I was having, but flying is definitely quite the pain. It's just steering that's terrible. Like I can go in a general direction okay, but if I want to aim for a specific object (like trying to go through one of those floating rocks with a hole in the middle) it's just awful.
Flying: Yeah, flick it up when you want to go up. It was in the tutorial right before the move faster by aiming downwards. I came into this topic on the issue of steering problems, actually. My bird loves to veer in circles to the left when I turn right. Stupid bird.
Tumbleweeds: Keep your net ready, and when you hear one behind you (they are always behind you), run alongside it with the net outstretched. I usually try to scoop it like ice cream.

So weve cornered Andy and Kyle in the Swarts stairwell and then this guy comes out of NO WHERE like ****ing Batman or something. ; ExTha is the man
Woo, tumbleweeds were easy to get and I upgraded my net. Flying is a lot better now but steering is awful. I wish the joystick would have been steering.
-- Menji - www.last.fm/user/menjii You got to put me on. Come on! Come on!
Flying is fine for general traversal in the sky, but anything that requires precision it quickly becomes apparent that motion controls aren't ideal. Also, the bird hates getting near rocks.

And is it normal for your controller to just go crazy after awhile? Every so often I have to drop my controller almost vertically to dive and my hand is hurting. And the worst thing that happens is my remote sensor flies way off screen so I have to point my controller at a wall to do anything. This might be because I have a mirror in my room and I had to move my sensor to the bottom of my tv since it can't hold the mount. Anyone experienced that?
-- Menji~ Congrats to SuperNiceDog: "Rivalry Rumble" Guru Champion!
You need to recalibrate it every so often. If you're using the slingshot or an item like that, you can press down to center the cursor, which kinda fixes it. But yeah, recalibrate it in the menu.

is it pretty obvious where to go? I can't picture it offhand.

Where is the missing daughter on Skyloft? I've been running around town at night and can't find anything. Do I need to talk to someone to trigger it? I haven't explored the waterfall.

Go talk to the older guy at the Lumpy Pumpkin. Not sure if you have to talk to him at night or not though, can't remember. Either that or try striking the gravestone closest to the tree with your sword(I think it's that one).
