And this is why religion is the filth of humanity.

These people are seriously so selfish that they are only good to each other as a sort of delusional grown-up Santa Claus Sees You belief.

People like you make me sick.

I'm 100% atheistic. I don't think there is a big "reason" for our existence, just coincidence... But I don't need a bigger reason. I just try to have a good time for as long as I'm on this earth... And while I'm at it, I'll try to give the people close to me a good time too :-).

For me the definition of "good" is something that increases happyness in the world. And for me personally I also add some weights, for me it's more important for people close to me to be happy then for complete strangers...

I'm wondering how highly you think of your moral code.

If God is out of the question, and there's no scientific basis, where then does it come from?

Kind of a vague statement.

Evolution is the passing on of genes with variation and acts only on survival probability.

How does evolution create right and wrong behaviors?

It's the basis for the fact that we feel innate attachment to other humans. If we were evolved from, say, some kind of solitary animal, we wouldn't feel any reason to be nice to others of our own species.

Evolution doesn't spell out the fine details, but I can't agree that there's no basis.

Not to mention that working as a group and helping one another makes us more likely to survive. A sense of ethics is a great tool for any species to have for the most part.

Alright, but the meat of the question is why do you classify some actions as right or wrong?

Evolution is responsible for everything.
So when you have X, Y, and Z attributes, why do you say only Z is a moral behavior?

Alright, but the meat of the question is why do you classify some actions as right or wrong?

right and wrong are human concepts and generally apply to human society

for example, everyone eats to survive. not killing your neighbor, however, is the 'right' thing to do because it disrupts human society and has a negative impact on survival to do so, provided he was a good man. if he was posing at threat to everyone else, perhaps killing him was actually beneficial.

many other 'right' and 'wrongs' are pure cultural creations and are influenced by things such as religion, fear, tradition, etc.

@Cyclo: What about that neighbor? If he was posing a threat, why does that make him bad and the others good and not the other way around? At the very least, in his perspective, defending himself at the cost of society could be good for him, right? Or do you deny the idea of personal ethics completely?

@Leebo:

If you believe in moral relativity, what's the difference between saying "It is right for me to be nice" and "I want to be nice."

I believe morality is just a figment of humans.

But does that mean that Slavery was right at the time? Just because everyone thought that slavery was ok and right doesn't mean it was ok and right. There could be many aspects of society today that we believe are right that are actually wrong... we just haven't figured it out yet.

I am a moral absolutist, if you hadn't noticed. Not an absolutist in that I believe that lying is morally wrong in every situation, etc., but that in any specific moral dilemma, there is a morally correct choice and morally incorrect choice(s).

Imagine you are living in continual fear, being constantly raped and beaten while your family members are brutally murdered in front of your very eyes. Are you saying that there could possibly be a situation in which this would be anything but bad?
