This game's better than most people give it credit for.

I still like how the str/magic system and classes worked out. You'd think with Snow being a tank and all, he'd make a bad ravager... but turns out he's probably the best, because his cast times are the fastest of all the guys. So, he doesn't dish damage, but he piles on stagger faster than most anyone.

If you really want to get battles done fast, alternating between like one attack string with a commando involved and then a team of as many ravagers as you can have works awesome. Commando hit slows the chain gauge for a long time, then triple ravager makes it explode, with commando showing up again when the last hit finally is wearing off.

Hope is pretty much the worst, but unfortunately he's one of the more useful characters in battle.

Yeah, Sazh is awesome early on because he's the first one to learn Haste.
Once Hope gets it though, there's not much reason to use him besides overwhelming personal preference. >_>

The interesting thing about the weapons is that they are all weak at the beginning and they are generally balanced, such that it's really more about choosing one whose stats match your style for that character. Every weapon can be upgraded to an "ultimate weapon" for each character, the only difference will be its stat balance when it gets there.

Shake, everyone has equal uses, Hope is nowhere near a super good character.

Like, even endgame between Hope and Sazh? Sazh is the second most tanky character in the game, while Hope is the least durable by far. Sazh also has a good Commando class, meaning he can dish damage once the enemy's broken, and his Blitz is special in that it hits a TON so you're capable of doing fantastic damage with it if he's positioned close or is targeting a large enemy. His weapons also have a lot of unique effects to them,

alrighty, so I did the Lightning and Hope dungeon

basically these things happened

Lightning gave Hope a little combat switch blade

Hope obviously wants to murder Snow

Lightning is teaching Hope to be a heartless douchebag, which she may or may not be regretting

We find out what happened with Serah and Lightning and where the knife came from

Hope has ADD and keeps pulling out the knife when they're talking, NOT while fighting

Hope is still a b****ass

I fought a Gigantic Bulbasaur

There's a weapon with that name, but it's not a specific weapon.

The way it works is

-Everyone has 8 weapons
-Each weapon has a 2nd stage that has a different name
-Each weapon has a 3rd stage that always has the same name no matter which weapon you started with, but its stats depend on the starter weapon

Trust me, you wouldn't want 8 uniquely named 3rd stage weapons, or we'd all be killing turtles until we die.

one thing I found funny was when I was Running along, Lightning said "Its good to keep concentrated, but don't ever lose sight of whats happening around you"

and during the cutscene where she was teaching him to be a heartless bastard after he tried helping a dead soldier, she says only keep your goal in mind and forget everything else

Well, you'll probably beat the game without ever having a 3rd stage weapon. The item to upgrade from stage 2 to stage 3 can be obtained in 2 ways.

-buy it for 1,000,000 gil
-get it as a 1% drop from one of the turtles (5% with 5 star rating).

And really the only way to kill them before you've beaten the final boss is with Vanille's Death spell, and that's just luck.

Yes, beating the final boss unlocks the final Crystarium section.

Upgrading weapons makes a huuuge difference too. There's some good method to doing it that I can't really remember, so you could cost effectively make a max multiplier and then level them up.

Each weapon a character gets will be roughly like what they are the more they upgrade (so, standard weapons stay with above average strength/magic but no special effects, while strength focused ones stay strength focused). Also, each weapon not only has passive effects (or just lacks them), but can make different item synthesis abilities with accessories too. The odd ones usually get some pretty cool things to stack on top of their effects.

Though, if you go for the third level weapons, they lose their special synthesized ability, but not their passive effects.

I guess they're threatening Snow with Serah's life

cut back to Palmer and Vanille, where we're treated with a gorgeous looking forest path with a technoish remix of the main theme. Why do they always get the weird music
after going along, Palmer reveals that his kid is a lcie as well and they took him away =(
and the Frocobo was for him.
and its implied that Vanille was involved with this.
Back to hope and Lightning,She basically comes to her senses when shes compared to a pet and calls off Operation Nora
Some development occurs on how they feel on their current situation and shes determined to help Hope now

so the baddies show up and have Lightning and Hope surrounded

Then Snow shows up with Fang and busts out Shiva!

So they're on the same side now? Snow f***ed her, didn't he?

Lightning entrusts Snow with Hope and they Separate

woo more separating!

Snow and Hope go along and not much gets done

then Fang And Lightning are in the same party! AWWWW YEA

BUT, Fang barely has any CP

LEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNN

so fight some soldiers and then Fang reveals Vanille is her partner

back to Snow and Hope. I SMELL HIJINKS

They "Save" some civilians (they don't seem to give a s***) and then they go take a break

Snow finally breaks down and reveals he doesn't know what to do if his actions cause repercussions. Hope gets a Zenkai and tries to stab him, but they get blown up and Snow saves Hope by calling through several sky roofs and surviving a 100 foot drop

GOOD THING HES A WIZARD

Fang and Lightning are Chatting and reveals that Serah became a lcie because of her. Lightning Slaps her and they go on

COME ON GAME GIVE ME A BREAK, GIVE ME A 10 MINUTE CUTSCENE OR SOMETHING

so I said **** it and hit the deceptive gas and just ran by everything

then they see the explosion and its the same one that knocked Snow and hope off of the building

cut to snow and hope and they talk some more about how sorry he is, he blames himself and hes running away from his guilt

then a giant robot shows up and knocks snow away, Hope tries to fight but then Lightning and Fang show up

then we take the injured Snow and go to Hopes house

theres a scene with Hope and his Dad and they're happy. ITS LIKE THE DADDY ISSUES ESTABLISHED EARLIER NEVER EVEN HAPPENED

inevitably the government shows up and starts attacking the house

Snow tries to show them lcies are human too, then the guy, Rosch is it? shows up

hes been chasing us for a while now, hes obviously gonna be one of the higher up villians. I wonder what his boss battle will be...

oh wait they shot him dead here

....>_>

They should've just made him some generic masked soldier and called him a Captain, he was such a waste

we find a huge ship, another one shows up, and it gets gunned down by another ship, but this time its friendly

we hop on board

I may agree! Certainly it is the best intersection of both plot and gameplay; perhaps the only chapter where I feel they really nailed both. Some of the later chapters get much better for gameplay but they're generally weaker on the writing front.

anyways, we were running around and we decide to watch the parade, afterwards Palmer asks her on a date and decide to go see the chocobos

oh palmer, always asking underage white girls out as usual

so a little useless minigame occurs where I have to find Frocobo
oh wait, its NOT useless, I get an item afterwards

Hurray for not wasting my time like with Hope's mech!

Palmer reveals that he wanted to take Chibi Palmer here to see the chocobos and he can at least now tell him about them, as he was planning to turn himself in

we then get ambushed and this babelicious blonde chick with glasses shows up and reveals Vanille and Fang were the ones responsible for Palmer Jr. becoming a lcie

oh and in a touching scene, Palmer Jr turns into crystal =(. so his focus was to hug his dad?

as palmer confronts her about it, we got the famous SUGAR AND RAINBOWS line and he decides that its pointless for her to die. Then Ifrit comes out of nowhere

YA KNOW, CAUSE THIS SCENE DIDN"T HAVE ENOUGH ACTIONZ IN IT

after that, Palmer "shoots" himself

this would make for an intense turn of events but it doesn't cause I know hes not dead, they just made me earn his summon! And its backed up by that fact that Palmer Jr. is crystal now, he can't replace him as a party member like in FFV

dang it, this doesn't bode well

as I've mentioned, I actually started skipping battles cause I just wanted to watch some damn story. The gameplay parts drag on too much at times, but I was chalking it up to the game just setting up the story

reading your post makes me think there isn't gonna be much of a pay off
