or something

a scenario in which they take the time to establish a weapon or ability and it DOESN"T come into play later?

There are probably ways to work around Chekhov's theory on guns (for those who don't know: essentially, you must fire a gun if you show a gun on-stage). I'm debating whether or not I want to follow that rule in the play I'm writing now, actually.

What does that even mean?

Wouldn't it be "reverse Chekhov's Gun" if anything? Or even "inverted"

I'm not sure you two know what "subverted" means.

Just checked out the Checkov's Gun page for videogames:
The original Adventure Game, Colossal Cave (frequently known just as "Adventure"), subverts this: there's a room whose description goes on for pages and pages (compared to a few terse lines for other rooms), in an age when computer memory was at an extreme premium. The room has no effect whatsoever on the plot.

Is this not what PUN is talking about?

Oh, that's just TVTropes lingo. It doesn't mean anything and makes you look like an idiot when you bring it up in serious conversation. Chekov's Gun is an actual literary technique, just in case you thought it was a TVtrope thing as well.

Oh, I just realized that Pun said trope in the OP.

And since Chekov's Gun isn't an actual trope, I assume he's talking about TVTropes.

Carry on, then. I don't want anything to do with that awful site. I mistakenly thought this was a topic about actual literary technique.

DeepsPraw is right though, I've always been annoyed that TVTropes uses the term "subversion" when they really mean "inversion."

Everything about TVTropes annoys me, but that's beside the point.

To be fair, it's such a well known problem they even have a page about it.

from that page

It's only a subversion if the work sets up the trope, creating an expectation that the trope will be used, and then does something else

Again, is this not what PUN was going for? >_>

Yeah. If you set up something in a way that seems like it would be important later, but deliberately make it pointless or never used, then that would be a Subversion. So a Red Herring would be the correct answer.

An Inversion or reverse Chekhov's Gun would probably be something like, I dunno, maybe closer to a Retcon. Having something happen, and then retroactively explaining that it was set up beforehand (even though it really wasn't).
