I hear that it doesn't have a bunch of newer elements like Supports because they tried to base it off the elements of the first Fire Emblem as much as possible.
I also hear the characters have very little personality.
Still seems like it's still fun regardless, what do you think of it?

Pretty close to the worst Fire Emblem game I've ever played.
And I've played all of them. It's only marginally better than what it's a remake of, and the other NES game actually IS better than it to give an idea.

I enjoy almost everything, and even I had to force myself through this game at times. I can't say it had no redeeming qualities, and it was actually quite enjoyable at times, but even as a major fan of Fire Emblem, this did not do anything for me that almost every other game in the series didn't do better. I would recommend that all but really dedicated Fire Emblem fans avoid it.

Basically this.

the hardest difficulty has incredibly strong enemies. and there's reclassing, which is the game's main distinguishing feature - whether you like the game will probably depend on whether you like reclassing. but basically no character development for the vast majority of the cast and the story is even more subpar than the rest of the series. also, there's only 1 map objective ever, seize the throne.
personally i really liked it, because i like trying out different reclass strategies. trying to get the best stat spread and weapon ranks for the whole party and such. or just silly things like turning Lena into a swordmaster after promoting to use the Levin Sword.

My rivalry with SuperNiceDog turned out a bit one-sided.
Monshou no Nazo has 2 parts - book 1 and 2. Book 1 tells the same story as Shadow Dragon, only the writing isn't nearly as good and neither is the gameplay. A few chapters were even removed. So I definitely wouldn't recommend it as an alternative. But book 2 is much better than book 1, so you could play it after Shadow Dragon. Or just wait for the book 2 remake to get fan-translated.

Yep, 4/Seisen's the one with Sigurd. It takes a really different approach to things, introducing tons of new gameplay elements and having a completely different style than any of the other FE games have tried again yet. This site lists a lot of the major things it tried out:
5/Thracia's a sequel to it in the same continent, and was back to a more traditional style like the GBA ones would follow. Notable thing on it though is that it's taken as being hard. Still, really fun.

If you have played and enjoyed all other FEs available to you, then by all means continue with Shadow Dragon. If you haven't played them all, play a different one. If you didn't like them all, don't bother with FESD.
-- I don't like this duchy. Now, it's an adventurer.
I like Shadow Dragon. I don't really obsess over little stuff like Supports and things like that, so I didn't care that it was different. It still played like any FE game to me.

I enjoyed it, playing it on H5 (the max difficulty ssetting) was a fresh experience for me, the only time I've really struggled with a fire emblem game. It has its annoying parts (namely the wifi store) but other than that it's pretty solid.
I enjoyed it well enough, and I think it's much more playable than FE1-5, but it's still clearly weaker than most games in the series. Reclassing's a fun toy to play with, and there are some ideas I truly hope they implement in other, better Fire Emblem games (such as the ability to skip all enemy phase animation, "forging" as improving weapons rather than another form of buying them in a store, dead characters dropping their inventory into yours instead of it being randomly lost forever, etc.), but overall yeah, I'd recommend most other FE games first and would only recommend this one if you're a big fan of the series and are willing to put up with some more primitive gameplay (no shove, no rescue, evasion non-functional as a strategy) than average, and of course two-decades-old plot (although the actual text of the game script is well-translated!).

Eh, it feels a bit too different to really be comparable. Nearly no dialogue to get you attached to your loads of random characters, weak story, music is pretty eh. Gameplay-wise, accuracy's higher than ever for you and the enemies generally, but that tends to favor them as their fodder brigands will land 20+ damage blows more reliably than ever on your fastest thieves/swordsmen.
Makes even a normal playthrough feel a bit too meticulous for how... dull it already is.

It's pretty fun. Main weakness is just that it has a few maps that are pretty pointless, and there's a lack of enemy variety (for whatever reason they decided to almost entirely follow the original FE1 enemy layout, which means that all the classes that didn't exist back then only appear in one of the brand new side chapters). Most of the other complaints that get thrown around are just staggeringly irrelevant - complaints about the story and characters being weak hardly matter in the context of the series when there's been about one game that does these things well, and the whole support system was pretty garbage to begin with (yay, a largely useless system that provides conversations that are boring about 90% of the time). This series has always been about the gameplay, and Shadow Dragon is fine in that regard, a bit basic but still enjoyable.

Mistake you're making - overlooking the fact that we might not want to be saved.
It's not that good. The stages are long and boring, the animations are soulless, and the character models look like ass. I still liked it kinda but I wasn't very impressed with it coming from the GBA games, which imo are the best ones.
