What would it riff off of? 30s adventure serials and 50s B movies were old by that point.

60s had Dr. Who and Star Trek, so they'd have to totally go sci-fi with it, time travel and whatnot, bam Indy in Tokyo 2040.

Nah, if it's 60s sci-fi it needs to get the date for "the future" horribly and hilariously wrong (kind of like how Back to the Future II they go to the "future" which is in 2015. we've got four years to make flying cars).

So like..."the future" would be like...Tokyo 1992.

Having an Indiana Jones movie set later than 1960, with Henry Jr. as the lead, is iffy at best considering the character was born in 1899. I don't know how old Harrison Ford is and don't care to look it up, but Indy would be in his 60s by then. Unless he was searching for the Fountain of Youth, I'm not sure how well a sextagenarian can fight off whatever bad guys they have to deal with.

It would still clearly be Cold War era, however. So if you really want to use this setting, I would say make the archaeological stuff related to the Khmer Empire and put the action in Vietnam, in '63 or so. (This would be before the U.S. truly deployed to 'Nam, when the Buddhists were still protesting the North's actions.) I don't know enough about Buddhism to suggest what the actual plot would be about, but Angkor Wat was built to honor Vishnu, and I could hypothesize that some other long lost city was built by the Khmer that has some related importance.

If Indiana Jones had to riff off something from the 60's, it would obviously be James Bond or secret agent stuff in general.

Harrison Ford will be 70 next year. He's old.
