i remember the first time i played the game, right around its release, i rented it and was so confused when i got to the part about calling meryl. they told me the codec frequency was on the back of the cd case, but i didn't have it because i rented it. i had some type of CD in my inventory and was trying to read the back of it for like 6 hours. and this was before stuff like gamefaqs even existed (at least for me).

I had a similar experience with Twin Snakes, which was my first MGS1 experience. For that version, they said the Codec frequency was on the back of "the package." I had no idea what package they were talking about. I figure it must be something I had to find, so I ran all around the place trying to find a "package."
Then a thought occurred to me: "Hey, wasn't there a Codec frequency on the back of the case? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing one! Maybe it's the one I'm looking for!"
Literally thought I was cheating by looking it up.

Got Nastasha and Deepthroat mixed up, but otherwise had them all memorized. I remember forcing myself to memorize Otacon's on my first playthrough, since I was like "he raids the pantry? So, like, free rations? Sweet". Others were just recurring or the Meryl frequency, which I just remember was 140.lownumber

My first time playing MGS1 was in the Complete Collection or whatever it was called, where I'm pretty sure it didn't actually have the frequency on the back of the MGS1 case. My brother knew it from playing the game before though.
