Baldimore and Cassidy never really did contribute much. Especially later on where their only purpose was being relics.

Cassidy was a rival for Jessie, the only rival for anyone other than Ash, May, and Dawn.

They were the competent and genuinely evil TR members who actually did the theme song correctly. They were pretty good early on and provided for some good episodes. They really were underutilized later though.

Just saw the Chili episode. Cilan episodes tend to be pretty good, and I hope they continue with the storyline they set up for Chili.

Woo, the Kami episodes and the Clay battle episode have been subbed. :D

Oh, the new ending also showed a new Pokemon for Cilan. I wonder why Serebii didn't update his bio page.

Also, Ash's Unova team is really shaping up to be quite powerful. Particularly his latest two Pokemon.

*SPOILERS*

But it was just sooo predictable, and Team Rocket didn't even try to put up a fight. And they were stupid. "Oh, we'll trap the Kamis in indestructible laser cages, but we won't bother to reinforce our helicopter, nor will we do anything about the enemy Pokemon attacking us. We'll just sit here and hope everything works in our favor. Oh! They're attacking us? Welp, time to just give up and go away now, but not before shouting weightless threats!"

At least in the subway, Team Rocket actually had a good plan and almost succeeded.

On a different note, I've been keeping track of Ash's Pokemons' performances so far in Unova, but I have a question. If one of his Pokemon beats its opponent, but Ash stupidly keeps them out and they lose to their next opponent, should it really count as a loss on their record? Almost every time that happens, his Pokemon almost immediately loses. Discounting those losses would boost some of their performance ratios.

Lost Leader Strategy!
"StarrrrRAAPPPPtoORORRRRR"
Score: 5/10

The heroes have finally reached Veilstone City, but don't worry. It’s not yet time for a gym battle. As they approach some trees in the city (I assume it's a park?), several aura spheres pop out and almost hit them. They quickly find a Lucario fighting Maylene, the gym leader, who's apparently a better martial artist than Chuck. Remember Chuck? I bet you don't.

Lucario acts way too intensely for training, and Maylene seems worried. Some random pokemon watch the fight, including an Electabuzz which Piplup and Pikachu get into a fight with. Maylene asks Lucario to break it up, so it uses aura sphere to stop them. Even though this succeeds and doesn’t really hurt the pokemon, Maylene chews Lucario out for being too rough.

Ash recognizes the Electabuzz as Paul’s, and then a man named Reggie appears. Reggie introduces himself as Paul’s older brother, and recognizes Pikachu from Paul’s description. Unlike Paul, Reggie is a pretty cool guy who doesn’t afraid of anything, and we later see he has some thirty badges.

Ash asks for a battle with Maylene, who tells him to go to another gym instead. Yes, gone are the days of "as the Pewter City gym leader, it is my responsbility to accept any challenge." When Maylene says this, Lucario attacks her, and Reggie explains that Lucario isn't satisfied with her as a trainer, and "is training the trainer." Maylene was swept by Paul, losing utterly, and is now uncertain of her value as a trainer. Don’t worry, Maylene, Paul is one of the best trainers out there. You can tell because he’s one of the few who actually takes advantage of type weaknesses.

Ash is about to go search for another gym because why not? It’s not like he came all this way by foot to fight her. Lucario is angry at this (how? I thought pokemon don't understand human speech, Officer Jenny), but Dawn goes to speak to Maylene. She admits to Maylene that she's also thinking about quitting contests because she's lost so easily so many times now. Team Rocket appears, but to Dawn's surprise, they ask Lucario to join them instead of just attacking. Even though Team Rocket offers Lucario a balloon, several bottle caps, and part of a chocolate bar, it refuses and blasts them off.

Dawn challenges Maylene to a gym battle to cheer her up, and we cut to Ash talking to Reggie. Since Reggie has heard about Ash from his brother and wants to see him in action, he challenges him to a battle while Dawn, Maylene, and Gligar watch.

The battle is intense enough, but the only thing that’s of note is that Reggie has a Staraptor (I like the pokedex calling it the "predator pokemon," as if there can only be one), and when Ash wins, Reggie offers to teach his Staravia brave bird.

Maylene is about to offer to fight Ash when Dawn insists that she battle her instead, because she asked first, even though, as you'll recall, she did not. No time to think about chain of events, because it’s not time for a-- oh, time for a To Be Continued. Well, okay, I guess.

Well in most cases his Pokemon have taken a lot of damage from the first opponent, so it's not really a fair match. And like I said, as a result, they usually lost almost instantly without even landing a hit. Because Ash is stupid.

Depends. How many times before it gets old like the "Ash sends out Pidgeotto/Noctowl/Swellow/Staravia oh wait no he doesn't" joke?

Crossing the Battle Line!
"Meditite!"
"Meh."

Score: 4/10

Maylene accepts Dawn's challenge, but asks for the battle to take place tomorrow. Piplup is really getting into training for its first gym battle while, at the same time, Ash trains Staravia with Reggie. Staravia needs a moving target to work with, so Ash volunteers himself, impressing Reggie. I, too, would be impressed with stupidity of this magnitude. Meanwhile, Maylene meditates with Lucario. At night, Brock encourages Dawn's attempt to make Maylene feel better with a gym battle.

Meditite versus-- Dawn isn't sure if she's ready for a battle, and freaks out a little even though, from her perspective, nothing is at stake. After Ash encourages her, she finally sends out Buneary because it was her worst possible choice. Buneary loses, but succeeds in getting Maylene into the fight. Next up is Ambipom, whose strange tail movements allow it to finish Meditite off.

However, Maylene sends out Lucario, and there are certain pokemon that are never incompetent. Charizard? There are zero bad Charizard out there. Snorlax? Name a single one that can’t kick your ass. And Lucario is at the top of the herd when it comes to being competent because it was no doubt designed to be the face of Gen IV. Ambipom loses in ten seconds.

Finally, Dawn throws out Piplup. She tries to use contest techniques to make up for her lack of power, and Piplup tries to tough out as much damage as it can, but Lucario's sheer power and skill make Piplup winning impossible.

Dawn loses, but Maylene is now pumped and ready for a real battle with Ash. Yay getting people to do their jobs.

I suppose, but that's still held back by the fact that Dawn isn't really in it to win, she's in it to reinvigorate a character who won't ever show up again. It's only really good because Maylene's wavering on being a gym leader mirrors Dawn's wavering on being a coordinator.

The only problem with pokemon like Lucario and Charizard is you can't have come-from-behind victories because they're too competent, so they can't have proper main character status (thus why Charizard was disobedient for the majority of its screen time).

It was!

A Triple Fighting Chance!
"Free? I'm relaxed already."
Score: 7/10

It's been thirty-one episodes since Ash's last gym battle. I recall someone saying that the longest stretch between gym battles was somewhere around fifty episodes, so this isn't even the longest I'm going to have go, huh?

... Ugh.

Staravia versus Machoke. The former wins. Now it's Hipstertite time.
external image
It uses confusion, which, uh, confuses Staravia, so Ash is forced to recall it after Meditite manages a few meditates to improve it attack.

Now, Ash knows that Lucario is going to be Maylene's last pokemon, so it makes sense to save the only pokemon he has with a type advantage over it for last, right? So of course he sends Chimchar out right now. Meditite starts spamming detect, and eventually the writers remember that causes the move to fail, allowing Chimchar to land an attack. Sadly, however, confusion hit, which confuses Chimchar as well. You know that only has a 10% chance to happen, right, writers?

Ash sends out Staravia again, and Meditite's attempt to use confusion again fails for absolutely no reason, allowing Staravia to finish it with brave bird.

Finally is Lucario. Staravia tries another brave bird, but a single metal claw condescendingly knocks it out in one hit. Like I said, they would never have an incompetent Lucario. It’s just too cool-looking.

Chimchar is up now. Sadly, Lucario is just too fast for flamethrower to work, and when Chimchar gets too close, Lucario starts hitting it. Chimchar deals some damage, but it ultimately goes down to a metal claw (because nothing is more effective against fire than steel, am I right?).

Finally comes Buizel. It starts by getting its ass kicked because, as we know, gym battles must always be close if Ash is going to win, so Buizel needs to start by losing. Just before Lucario uses aura sphere to finish Buizel off, Buizel reveals that it knows water pulse, and eveyone acts like knowing one of the weakest water moves ever is a huge deal. Their attacks are so powerful that they destroy the roof,
external image
And Brock screams out "power beyond belief!" as if he hadn't seen Ash's Charizard or Snorlax in action before. I mean… I know Buizel is probably Ash’s best pokemon at pure battling at the moment, but Brock has seen better and I know he’s seen better.

Buizel is almost defeated, but it starts to rain through the hole in the roof, so its special ability, swift swim, increases its speed. The battle turns into a head-on force palm versus aqua jet collision, and both pokemon are knocked out at the same time.

Maylene decides to give Ash the badge even though he didn't actually win, and the episode ends.

Maybe I’m being too easy on this episode because it’s been forever since Ash had a proper battle, but I really enjoyed this gym battle. I don’t really like Maylene, but the battle itself was pretty decent.

Enter Galactic!
"Team Rocket's middle name is pride!"
Score: 5/10

At night, the heroes walk the city with Reggie, and everyone compliments Dawn for helping Maylene's fighting spirit. Reggie takes them to the city landmark: a group of meteorites embedded in a field. By the way, the episode will variously claim and show the meteorites in a single field or surrounding the entire city. I don’t know. Reggie explains that the city was built around them, and they've been treated as guardians since ancient times, because when I need protecting, I look to rocks. Dawn wonders about the mystery of where they came from. I'm just throwing this out there, okay, Dawn? I'm guessing they're possibly from space. Just saying. Just saying.

The heroes are the pokemon center, and Ash admits that he's not sure he deserves the badge since he didn't actually beat Maylene. That’s very mature of you, Ash. Perhaps you should go back to Erika, Koga, and Wattson and give them back those badges, too, huh? And probably Brock, too, given the ridiculous way in which you beat him. Nurse Joy suggests the heroes head for Pastoria City, and when Ash learns the gym leader there is a water specialist, the deal is sealed. “Aw yeah,” he thinks. “I’ve got a Turtwig and a Pikachu. That’s a perfect opportunity to throw down some Chimchar action.”

Ash asks what Dawn is doing to prepare for her next contest, and, startled, she claims she's been working on a new combination. Wow, that's a pretty gutsy lie, there, Dawn, given that Ash and Brock spend 90% of their time within sight of you.

Cut to Team Galactic. Blue-haired guy now has a name: Commander Saturn.
Saturn tells some Galactic grunts that they're going to use "the cube" to do something with the meteorites in Veilstone City. Then they'll finish planning their... plan, and destroy their base so no one can tell they've been here.

Saturn takes the cube to the meteorites, which causes both it and the meteorites to shine, and a bright light shoots into the sky. Every single person in the city can see this beam into the sky, okay? Remember that. The cube unfolds into a key, and Saturn orders a grunt to jam the city's communications, and suddenly, the city is cut off from the rest of the world. Phew. Don't worry. I won't remind Officer Jenny that landlines exist either. I’ll keep it a secret between the two of us, Saturn, okay? Even though we're explicitly told that Galactic's jamming affects radio and radar, it somehow also affects the pokemon center's equipment, endangering all of the pokemon there. Okay, is this the eighteenth or nineteenth time the show has used the "the pokemon center's injured pokemon will die if its machines aren't fixed" plot?

Maylene and Lucario come to the pokemon center and meet up with the heroes. She claims that Lucario senses something in the meteorite field. Yes, it senses something coming from the arcane beam reaching the heavens, so she suggests everyone go there while she sends a messenger to Officer Jenny.

Fortunately for Team Galactic, even though Saturn clearly created a beam into the sky that the entire city saw, no one came to the meteorite fields to check it out. Not a single person. Thus, he uses a helicopter to start stealing the meteorites, and it's up to, you guessed it, the heroes to stop him because only they think to go to where a bright beam appeared before the city was cut off from the rest of the world. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Ash isn’t an idiot. Maybe, by the standards of the world he lives in, he’s a goddamned genius.

When they see Team Galactic, Ash has a flashback to when Team Rocket was attacked by the Unown. That's right. Ash has a flashback to when Team Rocket was attacked. Ash demands to know what Team Galactic is up to, but rather than discuss his plans like a James Bond villain, Saturn simply attacks with his Toxicroak. Hey, I like this guy! He doesn't fall for the evil monologue tricoh he started talking about his evil plans in the middle of the fight okay. He wants the meteorites to "take the necessary forms to build the new world!" Before more can happen, Officer Jenny shows up.
external image

She uses her most powerful attack: stand there and tell the bad guys "you busted!" Wow, Saturn. Your plan to leave no trace of your presence has really worked out, huh? Believe it or not, Jenny's plan to attack a terrorist organization with mildly intimidating language fails, and the heroes have to save her from Saturn’s Toxicroak's attack. When Toxicroak sees Brock has a Croagunk, they get into a staring contest. NEW RIVALRY TIME I GUESS

Jenny tells Saturn to surrender while he still can even though he literally has a helicopter and like, I don't know, twelve full grown adults with him, and Jenny has four teenagers backing her up. Team Galactic sends out their dozens of Golbat, oh, God, you'll never get through Mount Moon now.

The Golbat slow the heroes down too much to stop Team Galactic, but Reggie and Electabuzz show up to help. The pokemon all combine their attacks to defeat the Golbat, and use a volt tackle/thunder combo to attack the helicopters. This saves... two of the meteorites. Inexplicably, Jenny then says they got all the meteorites back. I don't-- but-- what?

Cut to one of Saturn's goons, commenting that they didn't all of the meteorites. Saturn says it's okay, they have enough to make "the red chain" and that they're going to the lake.

What in the what is going on here, writers?

Not really true, since Plasma was supposed to show up 40 episodes ago.

Don't act like that's out of character for him.

The Bells Are Singing!
"I'm a proud woman and I've never even heard of an enchanted tablecloth! How could I have been so clueless?!"
Score: 3/10

Wow, Japan. Just wow.

On the road, Ash is training with Gligar. It's not actually very good at gliding, however, which seems kind of like a president who’s not very good at being president. Kind of like Obama.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH BURNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

(I seriously hate Obama though, just saying)

Its inability to glide properly causes it to almost crash into Dawn. At first she's mad, but she almost immediately turns it into an excuse to talk about pokemon fashion. I love Brock's reaction of "Oh, isn't that interesting." I'm sure it was meant sincerely, but the actor puts no effort into reading that line and it comes off as sarcastic. At least Ash and Pikachu are honest about what they think.
external image
Ash's exact words: "You're not interested in this, are you, Pikachu?"

Dawn has designed a vest for Buneary. This is so interesting that I will never mention it again. A Chingling appears out of the woods, playing with the heroes’ pokemon for a few moments before a magician-looking woman named Franchesca appears and says the Chingling is hers. She's a pokemon magician, and agrees to give an act for the heroes. I've gotta say, I really think magicians would be less impressive in a world where magic, psychic powers, super advanced technology, auras, and aliens are documented facts. I mean, I'm sure they'd still have like a place in society, but it'd be like... I don't know.

Franchesca's show involve three Chingling and a Pidgey, but during the show, one of her Chingling screws up the act because it's too active. Ash tells her to have Chingling watch him and Dawn fight because that will calm it down. I-- what? Wouldn't that just make it more hotblooded? Well, Buneary fights Gligar and Brock calls the battle off after both pokemon get some hits in because actualy action is way to boring for this shonen tale of wanting to become a master of pokemon battling. Chingling asks to fight, so Ash uses Turtwig. Sadly, Chingling won’t listen to orders properly, so Turtwig uses razor leaf, which hurts it. Team Rocket attacks and steals Chingling while it's unconscious, so Ash had Staravia-- uh no Brock has Happiny use pound on the balloon after Buneary launches it into the air.

Team Rocket does succeed in stealing the Chingling in a second attempt (meaning the first attempt was just padding) and runs off. James falls in love with the too-active Chingling and runs off with it after being told he can’t keep it, hoping to take it to his Chimecho to unite them.

The heroes find Jessie and Meowth and blast them off in about one second. Truly, a battle of kings.

Chingling refuses to join Team Rocket, so James fights it with Mime Jr., hoping to… I don’t know. The heroes arrive just in time to see the battle, so Franchesca commands it in the battle. It blasts James and Mime Jr. off. Chingling is now calm enough to work in the show properly, and the heroes take their leave of Franchesca, hoping to forget this episode ever even happened.

I actually want to start a Star Trek movie ranking topic, but I can't do both of these at once.
