All these Pokemon games are geared to make you the hero.
What if I don't wanna be the hero? What if I want to be a bad guy, and join the local Team Rocket/Magma/Galaxy/Whatever? Or strike out on my own and be feared and loathed by all factions?

You can do that sort of thing in other RPGs, like Fallout 3. Why can't I have more options in Pokemon? Beating the Elite Four and becoming the Champion isn't always everything!

The whole game: Sit there alone in your gym, not moving, and once every couple weeks a random weak trainer comes to challenge you.

You know in Red/Blue there was supposed to be a choice early on where you could join Team Rocket. A couple places/fights changed to reflect that.

Maybe not. You could end up doing random favors for your community. And maybe clean up some riff-raff here and there. Or maybe another gym leader comes along thinking he's the bee's knees and decides to challenge you.
