So that was the choice made by you guys for me, so I'll go ahead and play it! I've recently started it, actually, so I'm not going to restart the entire game. I went with male Shepard and made him an Inflitrator. Because I can always use practice with sniping! I'm currently on the part where I save the alien chick whose name begins with a T. (I don't remember it!)
I'm a bit bummed out that you only get two party members, especially when it seems like I have so many to choose from now at the beginning! I'm going with alien-dude who is the same race as Saren and pudgy ugly alien-dude for now, with trying out T-girl. I don't really have much of an interest in playing with Asian dude or human chick because they're, well, boring. (I swear, I'll remember these names once I start playing again.) I don't know if there's any pros or cons to playing with them or not playing with them though.
I'll keep you guys updated with my progress throughout the game, and I'd appreciate suggestions or information, so long as I'm not spoiled! I'll be starting up shortly. If you guys have any suggestions as to what I ought to be upgrading first, I'd love to hear them. I kind of went off on my gut for the most part.

Mass Effect 2 is superior to Mass Effect 1 in almost every single way. Plus, it uploads from your ME1 profile, so I imagine it would be nice to have fresh knowledge of what you did in ME1 going into ME2.

It's okay if you think the humans are boring, because they are. Why does such a boring race get to save the galaxy. I bet an elcor party member would be less boring than the humans.
Sniping is terrible in ME1, but vastly improved in ME2. Not to discourage you or anything, but a basic assault rifle and soldier is probably the easiest (albeit most boring) path in ME1.
Oh and it doesn't really matter who you bring along with you. Unlike ME2 the party you have is not incredibly important or anything in terms of skills or fighting from what i remember. On Normal or lower you'll be able to defeat most things by yourself. Typically you just bring along the people you like.

I just use auto level up because it didn't seem to make a huge difference really in what I put points in.
Although from playing I would recommend leveling up whomever you're using for Electronics and Decryption to level up those to high enough levels so that you can open any chest or hack any terminal in the game
Experience is for the entire party, not individual characters, so everyone is always the same level. Use whoever you like. Level up charm so you can access paragon conversation options.
Wait, that's right, isn't it? Been awhile since I played ME but I'm pretty sure that's how experience works. I actually need to replay it soon because I lost my old saves and wanted to redo my previous decisions anyway.
I went and convinced the council to make Captain Shepard (hereafter referred to as The Shep) a Spectre. So go him. And then I proceeded to run and get my own ship from the commander dude who failed to become a Spectre. I knew all of this, but the dialogue forced me to be surprised by it still.
I entered the ship and then talked with Kaiden, who was far too busy to give me personal thoughts or interesting dialogue, and then I talked to Garrus. And then I bumped the power button on my tower with my knee and it forced me to shut down for some weird reason. And I have work soon, so I'm not going to restart. I might get back to this tonight though.
I'll probably rock the Garrus/Wrex team because they're the only ones who don't bore the s*** out of me. If I sound pessimistic, it's probably because I haven't actually been on any sort of instance where I can run through and battle stuff in a while! Please tell me I don't need to spend time talking to people with minor fights strewn about as long as I have in this stretch of the game.

So, I had to talk to Anderson again to catch up to where I was, and then I proceeded to talk to everyone on the ship. Wrex is kind of an awesome downer.
I then went to find the Liara chick, and I went to that sector... only to find a ton of planets and no direction. So then I went ahead and started looking for the planet I needed to go on! First I went to Sparta where this planet had a distress signal, and there was a giant sandworm I had to blow to s*** with my vehicle. Btw, I'm atrocious driving this thing. Apparently a bunch of dudes were lured in and killed. Bummer. I'm supposed to inform the leader of them I guess.
Then I went to another very lava-y and brown planet. I tried to gtfo since it seemed like she wouldn't be there, but it refused to let me. So I went through the level for a while with Tali and Ashley, because I wanted to try out Tali mostly. Well, what ended up happening was that I got to a big stretch of fighting and fun times... and then I think I'm almost at this base and I get one shot murdered by a giant laser. And then I try to resume and suddenly I'm at the very beginning of the f***ing planet. So needless to say, I'm annoyed. I've stopped playing for now there. Someone please tell me there's something important on this planet, and how I can overcome getting one shot and sent to the beginning of the entire f***ing planet again?
Oh, and an auxiliary question: What is the point of all of these planets that I can't go to?

some are there just for show, others you can survey for materials and there's usually at least one planet per system you can land on that usually contains at least one corresponding sidequest

It's funny because the characters never get any more complex than these descriptions
still rocking Tali and Liara like I have been the entire game. Tali just looks good doing her thing while Liara levitates everyone for me so I can just murder them as they float helplessly in the air
I went through the mining place and eventually got back to where I was. With some excellent sniping, I was able to make life easier. Along the way, my vehicle got stuck on nothing. Ashley also got stuck and would refuse to move with me at one point as well. I got to the outside of the mining area and there was a cutscene I watched repeatedly because I could not kill the Geth Armitage. Everything else was fine, but I kept getting caught in the splash damage of the explosion it would make.
But then we get to the mining area, which was much easier than I anticipated. Liara is there and she seems completely devoid of any personality. (This does not change through the rest of the time I played.) I run around, we save her, and then we get to another cutscene that I seem repeatedly. We go on an elevator, Ashley makes a catty remark, we call Joker, the Krogan says he wants Liara, we say no, and then he says kill us all, and keep Liara alive if we want to. F***ing hated this fight so much. First, I would die without knowing what the hell was killing me. I seriously don't understand how I died a few times there. Second, I got stuck in the floor twice during this fight. I could not move and had to reload. And my party members would die, so it was often up to The Shep to get the job done. Eventually, I kill them all, we barely get out alive, and that's the end for the mining area.
After that, I went to the ship and talked to everyone. Liara is piss boring, Kaidan (is that his name?) finally showed personality, Ashley is racist (if I have to listen to bulls*** about hating other races and the rights and wrongs of it throughout this game, I will rage), Garrus is still cool, and Wrex is da man. Tali is pretty boring too. But after that, I went to the world where the Geth are trying to find the Thorian.
I went around and drove in the vehicle in which I am terrible at controlling and told the people to settle the f*** down, cause The Shep is going to make it rain on some Geth. Found the Lizbeth girl, lol'd at the cutscene of the Krogan and the AI, and then I got all the info I needed before reuniting Lizbeth with her mommy. The crazy leader of the little sect there tried to come at me, but the Shep was not having that and blew his brains out like the boss that he is. After that, I got grenades and was told to use them on the people who were infected. Fine with me. OH WAIT EXCEPT YOU BARELY EVER HAVE GRENADES HUH?
If there was a way to get more grenades consistently, I missed it. So I looked up that you could melee everyone and did that. Except for the one chick who was talking to the leader of the colonist at the beginning. She would not just be knocked out, so I kind of melee'd her to death. Whoops! RENEGADE. Btw, Thorian Creepers? Creeeeeeepy. Not sure why we needed generico zombies in this game though. I assume they'll play a bigger part, but come on. Zombie aliens in alien games were overdone since Halo's Flood!
I opened up the secret path and went through after the leader of the colony shot himself. I cheated and checked out the giant f***ing alien thing, and the Asari clone and all of that. Btw, why do all of my party members seem like they're made out of tissue paper? They go down constantly. This next part seems like it's going to be rough.
Party-wise, this is my ranking so far:
Wrex > Garrus > Ashley > Kaidan > Tali > Liara

I just did the Thorian fight on Insanity last night. It was actually easier than I'd feared.
Definitely not looking forward to the boss on Noveria, though. That one was a pain back on Normal (though not too bad on Hardcore, probably because it was my fourth time playing it).
Tali's definitely the most interesting to me because she has the most mysterious look out of everyone there and she has the most interesting backstory as well followed by Wrex.
Liara well she makes my babies so she has to be in my party
Ashley is easily the worst. Racist, annoying b****. I'll take boring over that any day. I'll even take Carth 2.0 over Ashley.
Tali is better in the second game btw. I didn't much care for her in the first either. Garrus and Wrex always the best.
And that vehicle you're driving, the Mako, don't worry. Everyone sucks at driving it because the controls for it are a disaster. And it just gets worse later on when you have to have some precision or else you'll fall off cliffs. I ran into some debris one time and the Mako literally flipped out and over a cliff. Driving that thing is always a chore.
Oh, also, get used to alien zombies >_>

Wow, you're literally the only other person I've found that realizes this
I'm also being lenient since I'm still sort of at the start of the game still.
Wrex is pretty much a badass, and every time he's been around, he's had a funny line for me. Wrex gives no s*** about anything but killing stuff, and that's pretty sweet. His backstory mostly has to do with his race's backstory, but the way in which he feels about it is pretty rad.
Garrus has a nice personality too. He wants to do right, and he seems like he's a very conflicted kind of guy most of the time. I like how while he's a straight man, he's got kind of a wise-ass attitude too "It's like everyone thinks we like putting ourselves in danger."
Ashley seems racist, yeah. But at least she has any sort of personality beyond that. She has jokes, even if they're sometimes mean-spirited, and she is rather pessimistic, but at least there's something there. She's the hard ass chick.
Kaidan has shown no personality until the last time I talked with him. I actually like him now. He seems like a mellow dude, but he doesn't want to overstep his boundaries. But you can tell that, if he's able to, he'll still show a bit of humor. "It's just art appreciation."
Tali... well, she is kind of interesting. It's just more like... who cares? So she's on a pilgrimage, and she's got a little shy girl thing going on. Eh, I can't get into it.
Liara is piss boring so far, shows no sort of emotion or any interesting traits beyond making blanket statements anyone else is the whole galaxy would make. She's literally no different from the Asari consort NPC that I talked to one time. She's lame.
But for the most part, I don't see a whole lot of personality in this game. So while I'm describing a personality for these guys... it isn't very pronounced at all aside from Wrex and Garrus.
Joker is top tier among them though, even if he's non-playable!
