I'm even able to forgive them as being main characters. Honestly, they're just kinda there for the trip. Besides, Balthier is the leading man, anyway - not Vaan.
I think my only real beef with the game is the questionable issues with the License System. I thought it was cool idea with spells and abilities, but with items, it just seems rather bogus. This sums it up, I feel: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=214
Princess Anri posted... Penelo is my favorite FFXII character :(
Why? And I don't mean that in some snobby way; I just think that she's no more than a plot device, and doesn't really offer much to anything. I'm curious to hear her finer points.
I think she's a good mage, but I can't really remember - it's been a while since I've played it.
I enjoyed the game a lot. Until it ended all of a sudden. It felt like half a game, I was all excited to go explore that second continent that got introduced in like the last hour. So disappointing.
From: Panthera | #022 I'll take Penelo being inoffensively minor over any number of more prominent but infinitely more annoying characters (see: cast of FFVIII)
FFXII is my favourite game in the series, also.
FFVIII cast the best

"But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed."
If FFIX's cast consisted only of Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, and Dagger, you might have a case!
Unfortunately, the other half of the cast exists.

if it was just those four it would be the second best cast in an FF game, behind X. of the rest of the characters, I guess Freya is the least offensive. Eiko and Amarant no thanks.
FF12 would be an incredible game without Vaan and Penelo. Ashe is one of my favourite leads in the series and the others are all great as well. If the game was just as long with more development on the remaining characters, it could have been a top-tier game for me. I loved the battle system, and it's just a shame that the narrative didn't do much for me.

Oh come on, Vaan and Penelo aren't that bad. At the worst, you might say they are "inoffensively minor". They're not annoying.
I find Penelo to be cute.

They're not bad, I just meant that they don't add anything to the game for me. Penelo is nice to look at yeah, but I can't honestly say I find her as interesting as any other party member in that game, or 95% of your party members in the series. I think that if the game focused on having significant development on a smaller cast, it could have been truly great. I mean the entire game until you find Ashe did not even need to exist. Give me Ashe, Basch, Balthier and Fran, make the game hard as **** (keep gambit options the same, just harder encounters), and let me have all 4 characters in my party with random witty dialogue between the group.
My problem with XII was the lack of a good villain. Vayne is lol and Cid just feels completely underwhelming. Also the license board was f***ing awful.
In the same way XII didn't have a good villain, neither did FFT or TO. You could argue Vagrant Story did with Losstarot but it's still a stretch. That's just how Matsuno makes his games though, not with an all-powerful evil murderer, but with a battle of conflicting ideals spanning severals.
BlackDra90n posted... Well aside from Vaan and Penelo, I still didn't like how combat was like automatic >_>
It wasn't...you're not forced to use the gambit system. I just turned it off when facing tougher enemies, and turned it on when waddling through trash I'd steamroll with minimal strategy anyway.

What's the matter, the Zubats and Geodudes too much for you? Can't get through a cave with just five monsters? How sad. - mikeburnfire
