This contest sucked because EVERY MATCH has been predictable. Link exists in 6 matches.
There are two aspects to a contest: the journey, and the end. We have eliminated the end from contests. No end result in a standard contest will be anything but predictable. The journey can still be good, but the end sucking will sour the whole thing.
I think you could go a bit further than that, even. Make it a top 16 / 32 contest, let people nominate their favorite games of the year, then put them into a bracket. You could do the whole nomination / bracket predicting phase in December, then throw up the contest at the beginning of January. You're always getting new games, so it keeps things fresh.

transcience posted... GOTD was pretty good, but not top 2 or 3. something about OOT's bastard stepchild winning it took the wind out of it for me, too. it was like the site needed to vote for Zelda somehow and that was the next best option. I know that's not rational but it sure felt that way.
I'd be curious to see a no generational divide game contest, but there would be absolutely no doubt about #1 and #2. maybe a good bracket could liven it up a bit.
Luckily we've got to option to put Ocarina/FF7/Majora into a "ToC", 2005-style!

Shadow of the Collossus beat MGS2 and MGS4, and that just isn't right. Luckily MGS3 got some comeuppance. Also Vice City should've gone further, freakin Vice City man.

The journey is more important than the destination, but there is no journey without a worthwhile destination. I.e. Daily commuting = boring. Roadtrip = fun.
Almost 100,000 votes, and that was 12 months ago. I know this board is the king of overreacting, but relax. God damn.
But the site's hits have dropped off massively over the past year. If no one's going to the site, there's only so high the votals can go. I'm not sure there's ever really been a correlation between how good a contest is and how high votals are anyway.

And you're crazy if you think the number is anywhere close to double digits. Realistically, here are the games that could win a contest without FFVII or OOT:
1. R/B/Y 2. LTTP 3. Mario 64 4. Chrono Trigger (and I feel like this is stretching it) 5. uhhhhh help me out here
I really wish they would just drop these battles all together. They were only interesting the first time they did them and after that we realized that it will always end with Cloud, Sephiroth, Link, Gannon, and Mario at the top. The win normally going to Link.
Every time I see them do these stupid character contests I expect a month or more of dull polls that will probably end the same way it always does.
Frankly, I would rather see polls that ask what my favorite color is than a character popularity contest.
Hell, even if the the poll was "who would win in a one on one fight" Link would still probably win because he is a fan favorite, even though several characters would easily kill him.

Yeah sounds about right. If I picked Chrono Trigger, it'd be using copious helpings of fanboy logic. I don't feel good about picking against Nintendo in anything important after watching this tonight.

Super Mario World, Majora's Mask... uh... Maybe Kingdom Hearts 2 if match pic was amazing... Not that these are options that are much better...
I dunno, if you take out OOT and FF7 you get a group of 5-10 Nintendo games fighting with each other to win. if it's not them, it's 1 or 2 Square games. none of these games were made in the last 10 years.
yeah, I'm just not feeling it. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Well, you can substitute Mario World or Mario 3 in there if you want, but you're still looking at 6 games and I feel like Mario 64 established itself as the strongest Mario game last time.
But still, LOL 4-ways so who knows
Majora's Mask wouldn't win a wide-open Games Contest though, no way.

Sad as I am to say it, I'm not sure if I take Chrono Trigger to even be in the top 10 games on Nintendo systems.

Here's the thing though. I'm not sure if that's what's really being argued here. GotD gave us that. Majora's Mask wasn't supposed to win that contest. GSC was supposed to beat it earlier on.
MM winning was an upset, but I'm not so convinced people actually want an upset so much as they want Zelda to lose. There's an obvious overlap between the two, but I think GotD highlighted where they don't. People seem so caught up in Zelda winning all the time that they're overlooking that MM was a change in the "end" and instead backpedaled and claimed that wasn't really a change because it's Zelda.

TP, Brawl, Melee, FFX, Skyrim, Wind Waker, RE4, and ME3 aren't winning that kind of contest, and you know it.
Well, I'm sure someone could come up with some crazy rationale for thinking Melee got rSFF'd by Brawl or something, but this isn't 2006 anymore. Smash Bros. isn't as popular as it used to be.

Yeah, the fact that the only games with a chance of winning are Nintendo kind of ruins it for me. It just gets old. Nothing new from something not Nintendo will ever become popular on GameFAQs. People here are too close-minded.

Tetris doesn't have insane rally potential. It's not anywhere in the same league as L-Block.
Whoops, forgot about Brawl/Melee! I think those 4ways against Pokemon were highly misleading; you could make a good case for either taking it in a 1v1 setting.
Skyrim would also be really fun, though I'd put it one tier back in that TP/WW/Skyward Sword/FFX/RE4 range, myself.

I don't really get the problem. Like, why are people acting like a contest, even if predictable, is somehow physically hurting them so much that they have to see it go? I mean, I'm completely lost when I see thundersheep post about how the contest makes this board go to s***, and then see tranny post that there have been like, no new users this time around to even whine all that much. I'd rather see if a new idea for a contest can make them fun again, even if it fails, over "DO YOU HAVE A WII YET?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

MM was not a change. Not in the way it matters. Nintendo, Zelda, yeah. No one picking it to win doesn't matter - no one wanted it to win. People were happy that something new might win for a change.

It's more of a "Let a good thing die while it still has a measure of dignity left," like a star athlete retiring before his skills deteriorate to the point that he becomes bad and people feel bad for him.
That being said, I'm not saying we can't have exciting contest matches or anything of the sort, but they're not nearly as exciting as they used to be.
Is it better than generic POTDs? Sure, I won't argue with that, but eh.
