It's a terrible, almost unplayable game tbh, so why do people revere it so much? There is only one negative review for it on here...

It's probably a bad game by the standards of today. But at the time it was one of the best NES games that just happened to be really hard.

Because it's terrible and almost unplayable. Kinda like Ninja Gaiden. People consider it classic because they look good praising a game few can beat.

I've beaten the game on one continue before, try again :)

I was getting to at least level 6 consistently as a kid, too.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Never beaten the whole game on co-op before though, never even tried to because a glitch in Level 11 stops the second player from continuing.

To me, battletoads only gets "hard" at Terra Tubes (level 9) and beyond (maybe volkmire's inferno as well... but that's more about memorization than difficulty). I really hate to see people complain about level 3, because all that takes is reflexes beyond "down's syndrome child"

This is only on single player mind you, because multiplayer is a ginormorous crapfest considering I've yet to find one person in real life who actually enjoys or knows the game at all.

edit: and yeah, I don't really understand all the hate either, it's really not that bad, and quite fun for a "replay this over and over until you have it down" kind of platformer. And trust me, a LOT of people love those type of games, if only for the feeling of mastery. This is the regular Nintendo board, most here like their games hard.

Yeah this is pretty much my thought as well--the last segment of Volkmire's Inferno is tough, then the second half of Terra Tubes (the second gear chase section and onwards) marks the point where everything afterward is especially tough.

There's a big difference between unplayable and unbeatable.

Unbeatable games are just extremely hard. Unplayable games don't actually work right.

I think most of us played those NG games before we were ready for it. I couldn't beat 1 & 3 as a 3rd grader, but had no problem beating both games over a weekend just recently. No, I didn't use state saving to achieve this.

Number 1 example of this imo is the Dam level of TMNT

though some later parts of that game are still ridiculously hard for me even now

People don't think it's good, on the whole. The reason reviews on this site are skewed towards positive scores is because of "who's bothering to rate this" bias.

Realize:

- Battletoads came out before this site was founded, so people won't casually play it and drop a rating.
- Battletoads is not from a popular franchise, so people who've disliked it won't go out of their way to rate it.
- Battletoads is not terrible, so people in the mood for rating an old bad game won't immediately think of it.

So what you're left with are the people who are big fans of the old game, generally, meaning you're stuck with good reviews. The 1s and 2s that would be there for a really bad game aren't there cause it's not that bad, and the 4s, 5s, and 6s of "meh" games that it'd get if it was current aren't there because people don't generally have the urge to write a review for a 4 5 or 6 game. So you're left with the fanboys, basically, and its scores are high.

The Dam in TMNT is pretty difficult actually even in retrospec. Yeah when I was a kid I was able to beat it easily...after playing the game for a long long time. Especially since you had to if you died on the even harder later sections. That does not mean it was easy.

The 2-player mode is legitimately broken, and it's not like there aren't tons of gliches found throughout the game

People remember it fondly for various reasons, but it's definitely not a "classic." Double Dragon, TMNT II, and Contra would be the co-op games that people remember most fondly. And those are actually decent games.

Battletoads isn't bad, particurly the Genesis port. It has a decent amount of level variety, intense challenging game design, and its just so satisfying to send people flying with your large limbs. There's a fun wind-up-then-attack to all the finishers that never gets old, because it doesn't compromise the entirety/main appeal of the game(which is...whatever the level feels like doing at the time).

There were warps in many of the opening levels

I'd never skip the second one though, you rack up a stupid amount of lives with the crows

2-player mode I'll grant you. But "tons of glitches"? There's glitches in every game, and Battletoads no more so than any other reasonably polished title.
