Not going into the tournament undefeated is probably better for Chrono Trigger, to be honest.

From: paulg235 | #050
I just wanted to see the last undefeated game lose. : P

Because that mentality won't be present in the tournament.

Path of Radiance returns to the board after getting a rare win against a good foe.

Chrono Cross jumped from 80th to 76th after the big win.

So much for the upset being worth much.

Not only that, but IIRC that's still only Chrono Cross's sixth win out of the last fifteen matches. It's understandable that Cross would be so desperate.

EDIT: Yep, after a 10-5 start, Cross lost 9 out of the last 15 matches despite its random upset of Trigger. The poor thing even lost five matches in a row after its 10-5 start (although near upsets of S3&K and Half-Life 2 are nothing to sniff at...although soon after, Cross struggled to stay ahead of freaking Civilization IV...).

- goes with everything

Thanks to FFIX's loss, Chrono Trigger will be remaining atop my ballot. It's actually kind of ironic...had this happened earlier in the week, CT might've fallen behind RE4 for this loss, but after that impressive win over SM64, Galaxy jumped RE4 on my ballot and I can't...

Wait, one of Galaxy's losses was to RE4? Well, seeing as how I've already determined that after its upset of FFIX, Wind Waker will be jumping up to ahead of another game it beat that was on my ballot, Metroid Prime, I can't very well vote Galaxy ahead of RE4 when there's a head-to-head result. Sure, RE4's non-conference schedule wasn't great aside from the win over Galaxy, but I guess some of that stuff is kinda decent...

But I guess CT's still #1. Even though its loss was to a weaker opponent and it played in a weaker conference, it was an overtime loss and CT had a much stronger non-conference schedule. But yeah, I think I have to move RE4 up to #2. I think...

Week 9: SMG 31, LozWW 22 (58.49%-41.51%)
Week 3: RE4 30, LoZWW 24 (55.56%-44.44%)

Week 7: RE4 39, R&C 11 (78%-22%)
Week 23: SMG 22, R&C 15 (59.46%-40.54%)

Week 7: SMG 30, P4 25 (54.55%-45.45%)
Week 23: RE4 23, P4 22 (51.11%-48.89%)

Week 24: SMG 23, MK64 14 (62.16%-57.84%)
Week 14: RE4 23, MK64 16 (58.97%-41.03%)

Week 15: RE4 23, MGS3 13 (63.89%-36.11%)
Week 18: SMG 28, MGS3 19 (59.57%-40.43%)

...three out of five, not enough. Even if it were four out of five in SMG's favor, I'd have to consider putting RE4 ahead. If all five common opponents favored SMG, that'd probably be enough to convince me that SMG was most definitely indirectly stronger despite the direct result, but...RE4's #2.

But it's very close. If it weren't for the fact that one of SMG's losses was to RE4, SMG would definitely be my #2.

#19 Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Thousand-Year World of Sunshine Conference) (25-5, 11-0) – 18 (58.06%)
--At one point, TTYD was 7-5. 18 straight wins and a victory over the original Paper Mario later, it looks to be in position to get a good seed in the tournament.

#17 Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow (Nintendo Objections Conference) (26-4, 8-3) – 20 (62.50%)
#25 Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (Games of the Decades Conference) (24-6, 10-1) – 12 (37.50%)

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Twilight Barrel Galaxy Conference) (22-8, 9-2) – 12 (37.50%)

There's a game in the contest with a win over Street Fighter II and yet a loss to No Mercy. Mind is blown.

And I still can't get over the fact that there's a game in the contest that beat Super Metroid and SOTN, and yet struggled to break 40% on Twilight Princess. Argh, make up your minds, people.

Also yeah Mario Sunshine is not an N64 game, lol.

Oh, and I just realized that there is now a game in the contest with a win over GoldenEye and yet a loss to Marvel vs. Capcom 3. ARGH.

Okay, some fun stuff with overall records:

-MvC3's upset win over SFII is still only its sixth win in the last fifteen matches and SFII's fifth loss in that same span.
-Both MM2 and MM3 went 5-10 in the last half of the contest.
-F-Zero GX lost 8 out of 15 after a 9-6 start.
-Twilight Princess is 0-5 against console Final Fantasy and Zelda games, while The Wind Waker is 4-0 against other Zelda games and has beaten the only FF it met (although it lost to Kingdom Hearts).
-Shadow of the Colossus won 8 out of 15 after a 7-8 start to finish at .500.

You've done fine games.

Well there was once a time when MvC3 was going around losing to the likes of No Mercy and Crash Team Racing. I think MvC3's case is more or less the same as The Wind Waker's - people love to see it pull off silly upsets, but when it's the favorite to win, its loud hatebase comes back to bite it.

Seriously, everytime I thought The Wind Waker would lose, it won. Well, except against Kingdom Hearts, but Wind Waker would've won that match too if I was there (plus I expected KH to destroy Wind Waker - although given how Wind Waker has beaten the only other big Square game it faced, I think we can take it as an indication that WW is quite strong).

I thought about the latter point, and while yes, MvC3 to many represents how "awful" Capcom is today while SF2 represents when Capcom became so big in the first place. However, thing is, gamers in general just don't seem to view classic Capcom in the same light as classic Nintendo or Square (or, on this board, Sega). I won't bother trying to explain why, but it just seems that way to me.

TTYD beat the original PM because it's the better game. Still, because it's essentially the same series, an LMS-style inequality:

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars > Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door > Paper Mario > Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

LOL wut. SMRPG-TTYD was the closest match, but it also had the highest votals (although it was close between SMRPG-TTYD and SMRPG-PM). So, which Mario RPG is really the board's favorite?

Games that have won every match against other members of their series and are therefore unquestionably the favorite member of the series, at least among this contest's voters (series with more than two games in the contest):

Super Mario Galaxy 2
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Mega Man 2
Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow
Suikoden II
Winner of today's Final Fantasy VI-Final Fantasy VII match
Winner of tomorrow's Metal Gear Solid-Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater match
Winner of tomorrow's Super Smash Bros. Melee-Super Smash Bros. Brawl match

Due to a complete lack of matches between Street Fighter II and the other Street Fighter games in this competition, no conclusions have been drawn for that series.

Galaxy 2's "top dog" status is kind of strange in that it is severely lacking in direct matches against the rest of the series--only two so far, with one of them being against obvious bottom rung Super Mario Sunshine, and this week it's facing SMRPG. However, Galaxy 1 has direct wins over both SM64 and SMW, both of which have head-to-head wins over SMB3 (and SMW also beat SMW2), and SMG2 beat SMG1.

#5 Final Fantasy VII (Fanservice Conference) (27-3, 11-0) – 17 (43.59%)
--After CT's loss, FFVII actually had the longest winning streak in the contest at 24 straight, but FFVI's win today passes that title on to--believe it or not--Symphony of the Night, which has now won 21 straight.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Games of the Decades Conference) (18-12, 7-4) – 16 (48.48%)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Patriot Time Portals Conference) (21-9, 7-4) – 17 (51.52%)
--MGS4 wins a tight battle against MGS2, which lost every rivalry battle against fellow MGS games this year.

Mega Man 9 (Twilight Barrel Galaxy) (11-19, 5-6) – 7 (20.00%)
Mega Man X (Fanservice Conference) (21-9, 7-4) – 28 (80.00%)
--MMX quadruples MM9.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (Brawl for Broke Conference) (10-20, 3-8) – 11 (33.33%)
The World Ends With You (Zelda Overload Conference) (17-13, 7-4) – 22 (66.67%)
--TWEWY doubles up Layton to finish its season on a high note. Now it has to sit back and wait to see if it gets invited to the tournament.

#21 Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Nintendo Objections Conference) (25-5, 9-2) – 17 (51.52%) (OT, 8-3)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations (Fanservice Conference) (24-6, 9-2) – 16 (48.48%)
--Man, these results are gradually getting worse and worse as Rivalry Week progresses.

Ogre Battle 64 (Cult RPG Galaxy Conference) (8-22, 4-7) – 16 (51.61%) (OT, 6-4)
Mega Man Legends (Metroid Eater Conference) (10-20, 6-5) – 15 (48.39%)
--Ogre Battle 64 finishes its season with an OT win over MML.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (Patriot Time Portals Conference) (15-15, 7-4) – 12 (32.43%)
Pokemon Black/White (Cult RPG Galaxy Conference) (20-10, 7-4) – 25 (67.57%)
--Black/White makes it clear cut which of the two most recent Pokemon games is preferred by the fanbase.

Gunstar Heroes (Cult RPG Galaxy Conference) (8-22, 1-10) – 22 (62.86%)
Guitar Hero II (Sonic Overload Conference) (2-28, 1-10) – 13 (37.14%)
--Being a Gunstar hero is better than being a Guitar hero, it seems.

Dark Cloud 2 (Smash Trigger Conference) (9-21, 4-7) – 16 (45.71%)
Civilization IV (Sonic Overload Conference) (16-14, 4-7) – 19 (54.29%)
--Civilization IV finishes with a winning record after beating Dark Cloud 2.

Skies of Arcadia (Tanooki Blitzball Conference) (22-8, 9-2) – 16 (47.06%)
Valkyria Chronicles (Brawl for Broke Conference) (22-8, 10-1) – 18 (52.94%)
--The battle of games featuring Vyse the Legend goes the way of Valkyria Chronicles.

Legend of Legaia (Thousand-Year World of Sunshine Conference) (6-24, 2-9) – 16 (51.61%)
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (Smash Trigger Conference) (4-26, 2-9) – 15 (48.39%)
--After a tough season, Legaia at least gets to finish with a win.

Shining Force II (Games of the Decades Conference) (8-22, 2-9) – 16 (53.33%)
Sonic CD (Sonic Overload Conference) (5-25, 2-9) – 14 (46.67%)

#22 Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Nintendo Objections Conference) (25-5, 9-2) – 22 (57.89%)
--DKC1 puts up an admirable fight, but it was no match for DKC2 in the end.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Smackdown Hotel Conference) (21-9, 7-4) – 20 (54.05%)
#6 Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Cult RPG Galaxy Conference) (27-3, 11-0) – 17 (45.95%)
--With this loss, we've now had 6 Top 10 games lose this week. Does anybody want that 1 seed or not?

Since I abstained from most matches today out of not caring, and since today is the final day, I ask that my votes be counted this one last time.

The RPI submits SMB3 as its choice for the final 1 seed! (Though there's bound to be plenty of debate.) FFVII barely hangs onto its Top 10 spot after the loss, while PW3 tumbles out of the ballots for failing to stain Manfred von Karma's perfect record.

I am genuinely surprised that the original beat Trials & Tribulations since I assumed that the majority of people here thought that Trials & Tribulations was better in just about every way. I guess people really relish the fact that the original was first and therefore the freshest of the two

It has more to do with Manfred von Karma being the single most awesome prosecutor in the series!

Silly swirldude. 2-4 is easily the best.

Of course, you could be one of those people who says 1-5 is the best, so it could be worse.
