We got him the premium edition of Disgaea 4 and the guide and he just got it in the mail today (from himself).
I haven't been keeping up with games like I used to so I would appreciate input on a good game to get him.
These are his gaming preferences (basically the same as mine):
He wants to play newer games. He likes Japanese RPGs and hates western RPGs. He is really sick of games where you can't control all the members in your party. His favorite games are SRPGs (and while I think we own most of those, feel free to suggest them). He does not have a DS or 3DS and never will. We have every other console ever though so nothing but those two are off limits.
Also, can someone please describe Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland for me?
Like, what is the battle system like and what are some other key elements to the game?

Record of Agarest War would be a good one, imo. SRPG, tons of gameplay, concept of the game is basically the same as a regular RPG except at the end of each generation the main character has a child that's different depending on who his mother is. This child then becomes the main character and this lasts five generations. It's EXTREMELY long, though; I put about 20 hours into it and didn't even make it out of the first generation. But it's a good bet that if he likes Disgaea he might like Record of Agarest War.
Haven't played Totori, but it's supposed to be Atelier Rorona with better gameplay. The Atelier games are traditional RPG's that focus on battle and alchemy. With alchemy, you basically transform the stuff you harvest from the wild and win from battles into other items, like healing potions or weapons. If you happen to know that he's played any of the Atelier Iris or Mana Khemia games and liked them, it'd be a good gift.

I am currently playing this game.
I have put like six thousand million hours into it and I'm halfway through generation 2.

Oh yeah, ever played any of the Fire Emblem games? I'm guessing yes since you're both SRPG gamers, but man, I can't think of much else. Besides maybe introducing him to Dofus/Wakfu or something.

He played Persona 3: FES and quit halfway through because he hates not controlling everyone.
But yeah games like that are indeed right up his alley but he's already too mad at P3.
Persona 3 Portable allows control over the other characters.
Persona 4 also allows it, and is the best game in the series. Perhaps my favorite game of all time.

Dofus/Wakfu are basically MMO SRPGs. Sounds great, but they're run by a company that makes really bad decisions so I'd suggest against getting into it.
