I tend to focus on the negatives when answering this kind of question, so overall I'd say no. Maybe I'm becoming a grumpy old guy, but games rarely captivate me like they used to. I also keep all my old games and I rarely care about graphics, so when I see "HD remakes" and stuff, it's largely unappealing. If I remember correctly I've purchased three new games this year (Pokemon White, Arkham City, and Portal 2) and there's not really anything that sticks out to me that I'm thinking I need to pick up. Granted I don't own a 3DS, and if I did I'd probably get Mario 3D Land, but one game never sells me a system.

No, and here's a few points why.

- The widening of gaming's audience has cause developers to dumb down their games to extraordinary degrees. Not in the sense that video games have gotten easier, but that games tend to hold your hand from beginning to end and need massive tutorials and constant reminders of very basic mechanics in a way to obstructs gameplay. Egoraptor has already covered the topic extensively in this video. )

- Video games are squandering their advantages over other mediums in favor of behaving like them. Everyone wants to be able to make a game with big budget cutscenes and a story that's told exclusively through them. Story and gameplay are separated to a disgusting degree, and it's evident in pretty much every big ticket game. Game designers seem to be more interested in making movies than they are in making video games.

- The advent of DLC has created an environment in which anyone who can afford to get away with charging for overpriced content that should have been available on the disc will do so. On-disc DLC is pretty much the laziest and scummiest s*** a company can do, because they put in the effort to create the content, put it on the disc, but tell you you can't use it because you didn't pay enough money the first time you bought the game.

And while i dont like the direction of gaming, i did not make this topic to just be loud and make a topic about how i dislike the direction. Im passionate about the issue, but im rational and fair too.
