RS were fine, no RB but then again neither were GSC. Emerald was the best pokemon game around when it was released though.

World map had some original and interesting city designs, and it's actually pretty cool if you're not too bothered by water.

Arceus, Magmortar, Regigigas and Rhyperior are gen 4 pokémon, so no.

Gen 3 is pretty great, but it's probably 3rd for me out of the 5. Gen 2 wasn't even any good until HG/SS came along.

I haven't played Platinum, and I'm told it improves on D/P, but Diamond felt like a very lackluster pokémon game. Generic, predictable, a very poor selection of pokémon available, as HM-dependant as it could get, unimpressive world map, some horrendous new pokémon. I guess Team Plasma is better than Aqua/Magma, yeah, who cares honestly.

Ruby/Sapphire weren't great, but I appreciated the whole new direction they took from the previous games and the noticeably different world map.

maybe i was just really struck by RNG but my ruby file had over 300 hours, never found Latios. A LOT of that time was spent looking for latios but I think my game either glitched or I was just super unlucky.

As far as competitive play, RSE is my favorite along with the current gen.

If we're talking competitive play, I guess RSE did it best. I'm not a fan of the current gen (nor the previous one): Stealth Rock and overuse of choice items ruined it for me.

Stantler's not where I'd go to to make a point (GSC has plenty of baby Pokemon that are completely without merit for that), but it IS awful and worse than Gorebyss.

Emerald is quite possibly the best Pokemon game. Solid availability of Pokemon of different types, both new and old, good polish, and some very fun boss fights.

Seconding this with fire yeah. D/P just aren't very good; FOG areas, halved swimming speed compared to Emerald, enemy AI felt like the worst it had been since RBY, almost zero available pokemon of certain common types such as fire and electric. Just blah. I still haven't played Gen 5 because of my disappointment with 4, even though it sounds much better (as does Platinum).
