I haven't played it, but word is that it's exactly like WoW in space, but with Bioware-style conversations and romances. Rumor also has it that it has no endgame, but I imagine that's something you can patch.

People are saying the Imperial Agent has the best storyline, and Jedi Consular has the worst, for what it's worth.

Hmm hows the gameplay though? Also are bounty hunter meant for ranged dps in raids?

Everyone says it's a WoW clone, so it's standard MMO fare. Take that as you will. And I don't know about that, sorry.

I assume so. The classes are a lot more varied in their roles in general. For example, the way my friend explains it to me, the SWTOR version of the Rogue has a completely viable tank spec.

I'll probably end up checking it out 'cause of some old WoW friends.

Alright. I played the beta and I played every class up to level 12ish at least and my Imperial Agent to level 24.

Here's the sitch.

The starter worlds are all fantastic on the Empire side, no question. They did an amazing job with the stories, quests, and such for Empire.

Republic is good as well...but just not AS good (with the exception of the Consular...that story was fantastic too). But the important thing is met on all the starter worlds with one exception (which I will get to in a moment). That important thing is "feeling like your class". When you're an imperial agent...your story makes you FEEL like an agent. The class quests really get that down pat. As do the other classes. You really feel like a trooper in a squad dealing with a rebellion and such. When you play a Sith or Jedi or Bounty Hunter you really FEEL like the class.

The only exception, for me, was the smuggler. Granted, I only played the starter world, but the smuggler's class quests were just so lame compared to the others. You barely met any gangsters or anything like that, and you spent the whole time dealing with the same thing the trooper did with just talking to different people. It was super disappointing especially since Smuggler was the class I was most looking forward too.

Enough about story...gameplay.

The gameplay is slick and smooth and responsive. No input lag horridness like in FFXIV ::shudder::

There is no auto-attack so everything you do is YOU and not just automation, which is really awesome since it forces every class to always be active. You have a general ability that sort of acts like an auto attack but it's on the global cooldown and you're not really going to be using it all that much except between abilities maybe here and there...but it's definitely not like you'll be mashing it over and over...I don't think I ever used it more than twice in a row...and that was only at early levels.

All the classes feel really nice and unique. There are 4 main classes with 2 Advanced classes each...but don't let this fool you. The Advanced Classes of each class are TOTALLY different. An Imperial Agent that goes Operative, will be up close and personal at all times unless they are healing. Whereas Snipers will be utilizing the unique cover system and staying far away whilst pelting the enemy with long range.

This idea applies to all AC's so there are really 8 classes to choose from. And the Republic and Empire classes MIRROR each other. A Bounty Hunter and Trooper both have the same abilities in a functional sense, but they just look totally different. A bounty hunter's flamethrower, for example, would operate the same as the trooper's lightning gun.

PVP is a blast. The Battlezones are uniquely done. No more capture the flag or anything like that. We have games like Huttball which is like Football inside a trap filled arena and it's super freaking fun. Alderaan has you controlling turrets to shoot down the opposing starship. And there's one more that i can't think of off the top of my head cause I didn't actually play it in beta.

PvE is great too. Flashpoints are this game's version of dungeons but are completely different than normal dungeons. Instead of you just hopping in somewhere and killing everything, there is a story that guides you along the Flashpoint. You may start on a ship heading to one destination you were going to go to anyway, and get ordered to commandeer an Imperial vessel to assert dominance over a wayward admiral. Then fulfill the orders that that admiral disobeyed and attack a Rebel starship to capture a traitor held on board.

So all the while you're killing things, the game gives you a real reason to do all of this and a real sense of reward when you're finished. It's freaking refreshing to say the least!

Also, you get companions that act like companions would in a single player RPG. You'll have conversations with them with dialogue choices, you can romance some of them, and you can bring 1 of them out at a time to quest with you. In addition to that, your companions will be the source of all your tradeskills. No more will you sit in town and wring your hands to make potions. Tell your companions to do it while you're out in the field being a hero.

And of course dialogue. Most every quest has voiced dialogue with choices within that dialogue...so you can talk how you want to talk to the NPC. Be funny, nice, or a complete total ****. And some of the choices will give you dark or light side points, and these are clearly indicated in the center when you highlight over the choice (you can turn this feature off too). These sorts of choices are also in the Flashpoints and can affect how the Flashpoint even plays out! There are sometimes MULTIPLE paths through a Flashpoint.

Finally, the abilities all feel really good to use. The sounds and animations are right on. Lightsabers will clash, and their users will parry and stuff....it just all looks and feels so very well done.

I highly recommend it.

The evil faction is the Sith Empire. The good faction is just called The Republic, because it isn't Old yet.

Oh, and it might be a good idea to not play if you really liked KotOR or KotOR 2 for their story. It retcons a ton, especially from KotOR 2.

I would wait a few months before starting playing, playing a MMO at launch is almost ALWAYS a mistake and it's gonna be even more so in SWTOR case because 1st tons of peopl,e are gonna want to play at the same time and you'll have to deal with login queues and servers crash and 2nd because it's Bioware's first MMO so it's pretty much assured it will still be bugged quite a bit at launch (it still has a few bad bugs and it's only a few days away from the head start).

After a few months the most glaring bugs will probably be fixed and you'll have a vast pool of reviews and opinion to base your choice of getting the game or not on.

There is no auto-attack so everything you do is YOU and not just automation, which is really awesome since it forces every class to always be active.

This worries me. I loved WoW since I didn't have to bother with doing the auto attacking so I could just focus on my skills instead. I guess this means no gun classes for me too since I don't like 3rd person shooting controls

There probably is a spammable no cooldown skill that replaces the auto attack, usually in games like this that's how it works.

There might even be a way to make a certain skill an auto-attack (GW2 has that function, don't see why SWTOR wouldn't)!

Honestlly...I love stealth classes, and alot of people loved the assassin but it just didn't do it for me. A lot of their moves just LOOK the same...so they lack flash, in my mind. But they are certainly very good at what they do from a functional standpoint. If you like stealth try both Assassin and Operative (Imperial Agent) before deciding on one of them.

This might still be true of the launch to be honest...but the beta was super smooth for me. I had NO CRASHES whatsoever. But yeah it might get bottlenecked at launch. We'll see. The early access is their attempt to stagger the traffic.

Ehhhhh not really. You will pretty much always be using an ability in battle rather than your regular attack ability. You only use that when you're trying to either conserve energy/force/heat or waiting for it to recover. Think about how in WoW Rogues didn't do anything besides auto-attack when their energy dropped below a certain point? In this game you will be using an ability every 1.5 seconds...or whatever the global cooldown is. Most of the time it WILL be an actual Ability. But sometimes, you'll fill in with your regular attack ability because it costs no energy/heat/force. It's much more fun than WoW...and I loved WoW.
