I had another topic about this, but it purged before I remembered to check back on it. I do recall, however, someone saying that Shepard was probably the strongest character from the past five years, which surprised me because I couldn't refute it but he doesn't seem that strong.

Ezio/Altair probably are the strongest characters from the last 5 years. With ME3, I think Shepard may have a chance to eclipse them, provided it is as well received as the first two games.

I would wager Cole MacGrath would do quite a bit better now. PSN giving away inFamous for free (and from what I saw, people who didn't already own the game usually picked it as one of their two free games) should help him out a lot, especially considering they did it pretty much to hype up the sequel.

Haven't played Skyward Sword yet, but how well would Ghirahim fare in a year or so?

He's pretty cool but he'll likely be weaker than Midna. Zelda characters outside the big three aren't too strong.
