Always looks they are trying their hardest, but the NBA it always seems like their playing lazy. Anyone else agree?

There is certainly a difference between playing for a National Championship and playing for a Paycheck

No, they are better so they try harder. Ever see the College Champion vs an NBa team? It's a blowout each year.

When you are at that much higher of a skill level, doing the same things looks easy.

Lots of NBA players have crazy ridiculously difficult shots in their arsenal that they make look effortless.

No, I don't agree. I've always found this argument dumb, in every sport.

NBA players play a lot tougher schedule as well. It's not as easy to necessarily GIVE YOUR ALL on every single play. but yeah, most of it is just the fact that they are better

Also a lot of the "effort" you might see in college as compared to the NBA is due to lower skill level resulting in more loose balls/turnover attempts. Not at the highest college level where teams have actual NBA prospects, but your average college team probably plays a lot sloppier than an NBA-level team, resulting in more scrambles/scrums, which I could see interpreted as "more effort."

Also, keep in mind that at the "elite" levels of college sports, they damn well sure are playing for money too. The better they look, the higher they get drafted, and the more money they make. They also have the motivation to avoid injury which would cost them millions of dollars potentially.

That's a lot less of a concern in basketball than it is in football though. Only 60 basketball players get drafted every year from however many amount of colleges there are, and young foreign players who are eligible for the draft cut into that number too. If you're not one of those 60 (and even if you're a low second-rounder) your chances of actually having an NBA career are slim.

There's a lot more opportunity in football.

The thing I like most about college basketball is the format.

Basketball SHOULD be played in two 20-minute halves IMO. Much better flow than four 12-minute quarters.

the 3 point line is the main problem with NCAAB. It's nice for tournament upsets and all, but really, it's pretty annoying to watch one-dimensional teams have a decent measure of success like they can.

Right, but that's why I qualified at the "elite" level. Yes, on the whole, the overwhelming majority of players in any sport are unlikely to play a single minute in the pros. But when say, Duke plays Kentucky, around half of the players on the court probably have reasonable pro prospects, right?

College players play defense harder. No two ways about it.

That's what you're seeing when you think they look like they are playing harder.

Duke not so much, you probably want Kentucky and North Carolina as your example schools.

Duke's pro prospects tend to be roleplayers at best in the NBA (with obvious exceptions like Grant Hill). Coach K deliberately recruits "high fundamentals" kids with more work ethic than talent so that they stick around longer than a year so he's not constantly restocking.

I don't think the argument that they have more talent so it makes it look easier applies much. Dwayne Wade is one of the most talented players in the NBA and I love watching him because he goes all out on almost every play. That seems to be extremely rare in pro ball.

Well he really only flies around the court like that when he drives because he knows he'll either make the basket and/or get the foul call.

It's not really good strategy to consistently wind up on the ground after every play.

As far as defense goes, NBA rules are more offensive-oriented and anti-defense (they basically went through the equivalent of what the NFL is going through these last few years a long time ago). When you combine the fact that NBA-level guards are the best ball-handlers on the planet with referees armed with tons of excuses to call fouls, playing super-tight defense and looking for turnovers is a very high-risk/low-long-term-reward strategy, for most players.
