Looking around and...seriously? I'm usually one of the first to challenge the conventional wisdom when it comes to the supposed invincibility of the Noble Nine--hell, at the start of this contest, I made a topic calling the entire concept outdated, not because one of them had finally lost a match to outside competition (even though that did happen), but because there was just too big a gap between the top six and the other three. And now I'm the only one trusting in the NN to hold off the Pokémon trainers? Sure, rivalries matter, but Samus and Ridley are pretty decent rivals in their own right, and Pokémon Trainer Red barely held off Revolver Ocelot on his own. He's not an elite character. Let's take a look at this...

Okay, Pokémon didn't do anything of great significance in GotD, but no big deal because the game these two hail from wasn't eligible for that contest. Going back to CBVIII, Charizard took advantage of being in a Noble Nine-less division and went all the way to the Elite 8 before losing in highly respectable fashion to Mario; Pikachu put up a likewise impressive number against Snake, though the fact that it was Pokémon Yellow Sprite Pikachu vs. Solid S*** and Charizard still got a better percentage on Mario than Pikachu did on Snake suggests that Charizard might have actually been rSFFing Mario, as strange as that sounds. Missingno., an RBY-exclusive that only exists due to faulty programming, "broke" the Noble Nine by beating Crono and was finally taken out in a close match by Sephiroth, while Red was taken down by Mega Man X (who may or may not be Mega Man's equal, but if I'm not mistaken the reason he took so long to make his contest debut is because the two were considered to be the same character during the CJayC era) and Mewtwo bowed out early to Ganondorf.

On to BGE2K9...RBY itself managed to beat Majora's Mask soundly, beat it again while being LFFed by GSC, then pulled off the amazing feat of advancing over MGS1 and FF8 with Ocarina of Time in the poll. Now, neither FFVIII nor MGS are as strong as their main characters, but Ocarina of Time is the Games Contest equivalent of Link (yes, there have only been two "open" games contests and both OoT and FFVII have won one, but "Ocarina of Time 2" won the GotD. Seriously, Majora's Mask had a working title of "Zelda Gaiden". It really is a shadow of OoT), so this would be like a Nintendo character managing to get second place in a fourway poll with Link and two non-overlapping midcarders--to keep the franchises the same, let's say Big Boss and Tidus. It eventually took a loss against Ocarina, Melee, and FFX--and really, when you get Link, two other Nintendo properties, and a high-caliber Square in a fourway, you know what happens. We saw this with Link vs. Mario vs. Samus vs. Crono in 2008.

CBVII...Lucario couldn't live up to hype; Mudkip continued to perform like a joke character that also has some mainstream appeal by taking second in its first match and then dropping out as soon as it was hit with other Nintendo things; Pikachu dominated its early rounds and took second to Crono in the process of knocking out defending champion L-Block, and then finished last in a pool with Samus, Crono, and Vincent; and Mewtwo took advantage of three-way Square SFF to get past Squall and Sora before finally dropping out in a poll with both Cloud and Snake.

...while 2007's results aren't quite so favorable, just look at that. While Mewtwo seems to be a little weaker--Ganondorf, while definitely one of the top midcarders, is no Noble Niner, and in the 2008 fourway, Mewtwo exited in last place, behind Weighted Companion Cube--most of the losses that the RBY crew faced in the past few years came at the hands of Noble Niners or those just below it. RBY nostalgia seems to have raised the game itself to Noble Nine levels and its characters almost as high. And why shouldn't this be one of the best rivalries in the contest? Blue's title in the games is "rival"! He's definitely the best rival in any of the Pokémon games (although Silver is easier to dredge up hatred for because he's just such a jerk), and while last contest we all said "nobody cares about the trainer", Link and Crono are silent protagonists too. Hell, they've gotten opportunities to give Link a voice, but they don't want to because Link is supposed to be the player's avatar, his "link" to the game, if you will, and it just wouldn't be right for someone else's voice to be coming out of his mouth. That's what the bigwigs at Nintendo have said. So why shouldn't the trainer be huge, too?
