Hilarious, I always knew it was supposed to be a good game but I've never actually played it. This really makes me want to go out and buy the card game.

I love Apples to Apples!

But Nutsy Bolts already taught me that I probably wouldn't enjoy playing it as a video game because people are terrible.

You'd have to play it with the right people.

I.E people you know enough to make jokes and inside jokes with. Nutsy Bolts was too public.

Also, I'm surprised at how funny I'm finding watching people play this game is without participation. Than again, it's giant bomb. They were made for this game.

Apples to Apples is a terrible game. I've played it with maybe a dozen different groups of people in all situations and it's funny for maybe ten minutes and then people start getting angry. The real issue was that there was never a set thing which decided victory, so some people put in cards that were literal only for the person to pick the opposite because it was more funny. And about halfway through, every time, someone would immediately start justifying their card the second it was flipped over, which ruined the anonymity of it all.

This sounds less like "terrible game" and more like "terrible people"

I've played it in groups ranging from parties to close friends to not-so-close friends to awkward family get-togethers. There is no situation or group of people that makes it good.

What game can't be ruined by terrible people?

I've never played Apples to Apples in person and not had fun. And playing to the judge is an important part of the game!

If you're caring about the victor in Apples to Apples, you are doing it wrong. There are plenty of games better-suited for taking winning seriously.

Automatically disqualify cards where people justify them. Problem solved there.
Explain ahead of time that people are free to choose on whatever basis they want, and it is YOUR job as the person giving them a card to decide what is most likely to make them pick it -- without justification. Problem solved there.

And if the problems still aren't solved, then you have terrible people to play with, because A2A is a great game. Lately, I seem to have been playing it on a weekly basis; we even started making our own cards for the adjectives to spice things up a bit. (They want to do the red cards too, but there's no way I'm writing up an entire game's worth of red cards on index cards, nor am I spending cash for "official" blank cards.)

I'm starting to get the feeling, with the fact that every game you've played apparently ends in competition, That you are that one guy.

I love A2A, great game, extremely simple yet elegant and brilliant concept. I have played through an entire box of red cards like 3 times in my life, and it has always been great. With or without alcohol, it's always fun.

I had both the Apples to Apples to go and the regular party edition. Plus like 40 of the print-your-own cards.

We trimmed out all the worst cards that never be funny (Katharine Hepburn) so we've got a really tight set.

"My dick" is the best power card ever.

It looks like the critical variable here is you. Maybe you're the guy that makes the game not as fun as it should be. I always have a blast when I play. I even had a great time playing the Disney version (not nearly as good as it sounds) with my girlfriend's family that I have next to nothing in common with. I get really competitive sometimes, but I don't ever get bitter...I just laugh it off (and win the game with my glorious humor and incredible modesty).

I'm the youngest son of a family of brothers. Getting my ass kicked consistently at every board game I've ever played from the age of six to around twelve sort of kept me from ever feeling bad about losing again. So no, I'm not 'that guy', unless 'that guy' takes losing in Risk at turn two like a man and doesn't say anything during the next two hours even though Risk isn't a spectator sport. But whatever, assume what you want about me to defend your precious silly game.

You lost a game of Risk in the second turn? Lol.

Games like Apples to Apple and Scatergories are best played at 3 in the morning with a bunch of over tired people, hilarity ensues.

I can enjoy Chess whether I'm playing against a genius who's gonna kick my ass, a beginner who I'll easily beat, or someone of my skill level. Because the game is actually good.

I can enjoy Checkers, Battleship, Sorry, Settlers of Catan, Scene It, etc etc regardless of my opponents too, because the games themselves are actually good

Every one of those games can be ruined with the wrong person.

Chess is like, the only example that can work with "doesn't matter who plays", since it's ****ing Chess.

Everything else that's meant for fun and is not supposed to be competitive on a worldwide level depends on the people.

Anyway, A2A + Alcohol is godly. Especially when playing with an exchange student from Puerto Rico who didn't understand 1/4 of the words and made the game incredibly funny.
