Zelda imo, just because it's always quality and I'm not a platformer fan.
Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island (does that count?) and Mario Galaxy were classics to me, but comparing it to Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past and Wind Waker there is a gulf in quality to me. Mario is fantastic and always good fun but I don't find it offers an experience on the level of Zelda. None of either series are close to my favourite games but Majora's Mask would have to be damn close and I could give it for that alone. Mario Sunshine was a bigger misstep than Skyward Sword imo (although both are good games). Same with Mario 2 vs Adventure of Link. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Zelda.
Mario had a lot of greatness, but when I compare the games to a Zelda game in the same period, Zelda slightly wins. Zelda can also count on excellent portable titles in Link's Awakening and the Oracles, Mario's portable side has always been much weaker IMO. -- This is a signature. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Mario Series Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 Super Mario World Super Mario Land Super Mario Land 2 Yoshi's Island (arguably doesn't count) Super Mario 64 Super Mario Sunshine New Super Mario Bros. New Super Mario Bros. Wii Super Mario Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy 2 Super Mario 3D Land Zelda Series The Legend of Zelda Zelda II: Adventure of Link A Link to the Past Link's Awakening Ocarina of Time Majora's Mask Oracle of Ages Oracle of Seasons Four Swords The Wind Waker Four Swords Adventures The Minish Cap Twilight Princess Phantom Hourglass Spirit Tracks Skyward Sword IMO it's damn close. Zelda 2D is superior to Mario 2D. But I can't really get into 3D Zelda at all and 3D Mario while it isn't as good as his best 2D outings is pretty fun. I havn't played any of the wii games though.
So I would rank them: Zelda 2D > Mario 2D > Mario 3D >> Zelda 3D Overall Mario > Zelda because they don't really make any new 2D zelda. :( -- Black Turtle showed once again why you always bet on the turtle and not on the hare by winning the guru contest. It is significantly better in the NES Better on the SNES ABSOLUTE OBLITERATION on both the N64 and Gamecube. Till about a week ago, it was Mario by a nice margin on the Wii, but after SS it is at worst a tie,'and more than likely a Zelda win. LA is better than the Mario La d games, so there is the GB GBC is easily Zelda. GBA is definitely Mario DS is a toss up (all 4 games are ok, but disappointing) 3DS is Zelda just because of OoT, but if you don't count that, then so far Mario by default. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The Zelda series had a purple patch between 1991 and 2001 encompassing Lttp, LA, OOT, MM and Oracles where it just absolutely obliterated every other series bar arguably Final Fantasy in that timeframe with quality and consistency. Mario wins the early years by a landslide and I would certainly favour Galaxy 1&2 over recent Zeldas. If we're speaking purely lifetime then it has to be Mario, its had a more consistent distribution of strong titles whereas the Zelda series brand is carried purely on the back of a 10 year period of excellence when the other 10 years of its existence have been good but hardly top tier.

I'm actually not that big a fan of the NES Marios. Plumber killed it on the SNES, N64, and Wii, but there was that 11-year stretch between SM64 and Galaxy where he had nothing good on consoles. I consider LttP (and, in turn, Zelda's SNES era) a disappointment, but it was competitive during the NES and a clear step above since the N64.
