As for realignment, one thing they wanted to do was to keep teams playing each other every year in the playoffs. Cam Neely was talking about something like Canes/Bruins from a few years ago, nice 7-game series, some bad blood develops... and then they won't see each other in the postseason until whenever it falls into place. The new layout helps some short term rivalries develop. I guess another important thing for the league was to have teams playing their road games close to their own time zone. For a team like the Blue Jackets or the Preds, you want to develop younger fans and keep them, so the bigger % of road games that people can actually watch, the better.

I've always felt that this type of "artificial" generation of rivalries completely misses the point.

You can't "make" rivalries happen. It just doesn't work. They happen organically. Look at Pens/Caps, that pretty much happened at the draft. Then there's stuff like Canucks/Hawks that was able to happen "whenever it falls into place" what, three years in a row?

I think the league would rather have Detroit/Chicago every year instead of Vancouver/Chicago popping up. It's better for the league to grow if they can get people rooted into constant regional matchups. I see your point (don't honestly care either way, just reporting what Cam said) outside of that.

Right, and I see the point of doing it this way, too.

I just think that people sell short how sometimes rivalries will just create themselves where you least expect them to. Remember post-lockout when teams played eight games within their division to "create rivalries" and how much that sucked? And yet, Caps/Pens became a great rivalry despite not being in division. Same thing with Canucks/Blackhawks. Even Red Wings/Penguins was pretty good for awhile there and they were in different conferences.

As a Hawks fan, I will miss the Canucks/Hawks rivalry that will most likely be diminished due to the restructuring.

However, in all honesty, the big rivalry here is and has always been Hawks/Wings. Most people in the area view the Canucks as sort of a joke, a team that is always one bad turn from completely losing their minds. Bobby Lu seems to be one of the most mocked figures on sports talk radio around here. The new system should actually allow for a lot more Wings/Hawks matchups in the playoffs, which should be great.

So...I guess I'm okay with it?

Oh boy...look out every non-Canadian playing in the World Juniors this year - the Ducks have decided to loan Smith-Pelly to Canada. DSP is going to run wild, mark my mords. He's been very impressive so far for Anaheim. Love that kid.

The Lightning are loaning Brett Connolly too so we should have a great team as per usual. Maybe we won't choke this year?

Tweet from Bob McKenzie, "Shocking, I know, but Seguin, Skinner, Nugent-Hopkins, Johansen, Couturier, not being released to Canada's nat'l junior" . It doesn't look like Gudbranson will be released either.

Good lord at that list of players...whenever Canada loses at the WJC I am reminded of how badly we would obliterate every team if our best players weren't in the NHL. The fact that we can't field our best team makes the tournament exciting and interesting because there is actually a chance we'll lose.

Looove the WJCs, they are probably my favourite thing about the holidays.

RappinHobo9292 posted...
Sens are such a terrible team

Hence why they're in a playoff spot despite being predicted, unanimously, to be the worst team in the league.

Also people don't give Spezza nearly enough credit. They don't focus on all the good he does for the team and only the bad. Hell, he gets flak for stuff that isn't even his fault (such as the 2nd shorthanded goal last night...watch the play it's on Karlsson and Alfredsson for that one.) It's sad because we're so lucky to have such a great player and every team except for maybe Pittsburgh would be so happy to have him.

Spezza is a risky player, but he's clutch, and unlike a lot of "soft" playmakers he doesn't drop his performance in the playoffs. A vast majority of our game tying, or game winning goals are assisted by or put in by Spezza. He's the best player on our team and doesn't get nearly enough credit for being one of the elite centres in the league.

I'd agree with this, but consider that rivalries develop organically through the playoffs. If you put everyone into a divisional playoff format (I really hope they end up being called divisions, incidentally... 4 "conferences" is deliberately confusing compared to the status quo of the NHL/NBA/NFL), then teams will face each other in the playoffs more often, which will create more of these rivalries. I mean, Canucks/Hawks had a rivalry just because they played each other 3 times in a row, and any other pair of teams in that situation would be the same. All the NHL is doing is trying to create more of those situations.

The reason the "8 divisional games a year" thing failed to create rivalries is because the regular season sucks at making rivalries.

Well, I think there's something to be said for the fact that sometimes you just get bored playing the same teams all the time. Even in the playoffs. Canucks/Blackhawks isn't a great rivalry just because they played a lot, it's because of how the games went and how the series were dramatic and how there was a compelling storyline and such. I mean, I dunno, I think one of the positives of the playoffs the way they are now is that you can create rivalries with teams you otherwise would not be able to.

Like, under this new system, it'll be a lot easier to create a rivalry between say, the Senators and the Canadiens, but it will be that much more difficult to create a rivalry between, say, the Sabres and the Capitals.

Hm, that's a fair point.

I was thinking that back when we last had divisional playoffs there were more and stronger rivalries, but that's possibly just because I was young at the time and more easily impressed by such things.

I think that may be true, but keep in mind there's a tradeoff.

Traditional rivalries (Hawks/Wings, Bruins/Habs, etc.) will almost surely be strengthened even more, as will new rivalries that are within the confines of the new divisions (Caps/Pens comes to mind).

The tradeoff; however, is that the creation of truly new rivalries outside of your current division will be almost impossible aside from the relatively unlikely occasion of teams meeting against each other in the cup finals several times in a row or some such thing. In other words, your current rivalries get better, but your available pool of potential rivalries decreases.

Taggin' this topic.

I'm a huge Blues fan. Sadly I don't get to watch their games ever. Any of you know a place online where I could maybe watch live games? I doubt it, or if there is I'd probably have to subscribe I'm sure. I'd also like to follow other teams. I was at my mom's house tonight and we watched Lightning vs Fliers. That was awesome. I like Philadelphia, mainly because Chris Pronger is there, and he was my favorite Blues player as a kid.

But yeah, I'm trying to get even more into hockey. Like I've always loved the sport and the Blues, but there's still a lot of stuff I don't understand or whatever.
