Almost lost a game because I had to shout at my team for 10 minutes to push as the enemy AM was farming up a storm.

Thankfully he ended up being dumb, blew his bkb early to try and push down our rax, so I sven munched his face with my blink dagger before he could blink out.

Yup got this on my first game.
We had 2 AFKers, this guy who kept feeding, the rager, and me. I chose "New" for my experience so maybe I should've expected something like that. But yeah the enemy got fed and then everyone on my team just decided to sit in the pool until the game was over.

Besides the terrible players, I really like the game. I love how they basically recreated the WC3 feel of the game, but streamlined everything.

Well, the interface is more similar, but the gameplay is still Dota.

Really, the only gameplay changes are mostly UI things since the game is now actually made to play Dota instead of a RTS. Saying that implies the only difference between Dota and LoL was an archaic interface, but that's really not true.

Not many players at the moment. I'm guessing their matchmaking algorithms work on the assumption that there are considerably more people in the pool as opposed to right now where at best numbers are 400 per location.

It'll probably get down to 5-10 seconds as more people are added. Of course, the further away you get from average the longer the wait will be.

Just played my 2nd ever game (not included the 5-10 times I played Dota 1 several years ago):

Not bad for 5v4 with all noobs I guess.
Lich is pretty awesome to play. It's probably one of the easiest characters, I would guess. You just sit back and buff people and launch your nukes and the Mechansm was good for heals and it's relatively stress free.

Anyways, even though there was a leaver right at the beginning, it was still a lot better than the first time I played. No one got especially mad, and they gave me tips (apparently Lich should use the ult EARLY in the fight).

My main problems: I suck at last hitting, and I don't know wtf to buy

Lich is probably the best newbie character. He's really easy, he has a built-in deny, and he doesn't need items to do much. The main thing you'll buy is Wards which also leads you into learning good ward locations.

Courier / Wards / Mek is core for Lich. I like Phase Boots but Strength Treads are also fine. After that things kinda depend on the game. If you're doing really well, you can pick up a Scepter to improve your ultimate. Otherwise... pretty much just buy what you need to counter the other team which is really dependent on the game so it's hard to give suggestions.

Using Lich's ult at the beginning will put the enemy in a lose/lose situation. If they stick together, the ultimate will deal full damage (assuming there are little-to-no creeps around -- otherwise you wouldn't use it), but if they split your team can engage and pick off part of their team. It's a pretty great skill. It's just too fun when you play against a team that INSISTS on starting fights in the river/jungle even after your ultimate tears them apart again and again since there are no creeps.

Ah, yeah. They last for 6 minutes and give sight at the location you drop them. Extremely useful to keep tabs on the enemy so you know where it is safe to farm and who's vulnerable for ganks. Also, you can put them in the river to watch over the rune spawns to make sure your team has control over them.

There's also true-sight wards that will show invisible units, but these have almost no vision on their own (and don't last as long) so these are used either to find enemy wards and destroy them, or to counter invisible heroes like Riki.

Lich is an amazing hero. He lacks a stun, but basically has 3 slows. My favorite thing about Lich is all of skills are always useful. I guess his 3rd skill (the one that gives you mana) won't be so useful late game, but it's great because it lets you spam spells for so long until that point where you get too much mana it doesn't even matter.

My favorite items for Lich are Boots of Travel, Blink Dagger and Shiva's. That doesn't mean I get them every game. Depending on the type of team I go against, or if a specific player is doing really well, I'll switch it up. In the case of the team you were playing against, a Ghost Scepter might be a good idea. It's a cheap item which is later meant to build into some agility item (I think), but I'm pretty sure I've never gotten that upgrade. This leads to a lot of idiots getting me killed because they're not used to something unconventional and will just farm. Often a typical loss for me will result in me getting a ton of kills and assists early while some moron farms, and we end up losing because I'm underleveled and they're bad.

Also, just looking at the final game stats in that picture, no way you were going to win. Your Pudge did terribly it looks like and you guys had no real stun.

A rule of thumb is disables and AOE win games.

I disagree with needing to have an emphasis on farming. I can't count the number of times where there's a massive team fight. Our team will all die, with their whole team being low, or a similar situation where they will die and we'll have 2 people left, but we can't push because we're too low on HP, while someone on our team is off farming. Farming isn't so bad, but I've noticed a ton of people farm so much, they may as well be make Dota a 4 vs 4 vs 1 vs 1 game.

There have been so many instances where if my team, or the opposing team had just had one more hero in a fight, or one more solid AOE hero, instead if an agility hero who's practically useless for the first 20 minutes of the game, the result would have been differently. I fully expect to end up in these games in the future. I really think the mind-set needs to switch to "oh they picked Anti-Mage? Okay, so we're just going to pick another push hero and watch them roll over because they're basically down one hero. Even like you said, damn Lycan, while being a hard carry is still incredibly useful pretty much all game. He's a really annoying hero who can also push, scout, tank, chase down heroes, and you can teleport to his wolves.

Anyway, I'll be able to play in a few hours if you're still on and anyone else is wanting to play. All that said, I'm still getting used to Dota 2 myself. I've played like..16 games I think. I've played a ton of DotA, but there are some things I still have to get used to, just like everyone else. I'm just happy the base game is pretty much identical.

Oh and let me just make sure what I'm saying is clear. I don't hate people that farm. I hate when there's a team fight on top of tower and our 5th player decides to farm instead of teleport in.

the carry should always have a TP scroll while farming to TP to a tower fight/escape

Just had a horrible game, but the servers completely exploded when our ancient had 13 health, so it didn't count as a loss, muahaha.
