What is DotA?

Well, good sir, DotA is the alpha and the omega of the League of Legends/HoN variety of games! All games in the genre sprung from it, and so too shall the genre return to it upon DotA 2's release. DotA is a team oriented game, in which two teams of 5 players face off against eachother. Each player takes control of one of 104 unique heroes, and face off against eachother on a large battlefield, assisted by waves of computer controlled monsters called "creeps". The two teams, the Radiant and the Dire, each have a base: Radiant in lower left, Dire in the upper right. There are three "lanes" connecting the bases, with towers guarding the road to victory. Each team must push these lanes, with the ultimate goal of breaching the enemy team's base and destroying their Ancient, granting them victory.

What kind of heroes are there?

DotA has all manner of heroes! The diversity of skills the various heroes employ is something to be commended. It would be quite impossible to go into them all here, but you can slake your thirst for knowledge at this link, if you want. http://www.playdota.com/heroes
To give a brief idea, though, there are three main types of heroes, Strength, Agility, and Intelligence based. Going a step further, DotA heroes occupy various "roles", parts they play in contributing to the team. The importance of teamwork in DotA cannot be stressed enough, so be sure you're aware of your hero's role!

What are these roles?

Remember to keep your shoes on at all times... wait, that's something different. DotA's roles include the following:
Carry - The importance of the carry in a DotA match can't be understated. By their nature, carries tend to start off fairly weak, but as they gain levels and items, they become unbelievably powerful. Back up your carry in the early/mid game, and watch them smite your foes in the late game!
Support - Support heroes, predictably, play a support role. Their job is to place wards around the map, heal their allies, stun their enemies, aid in setting up ganks, and other such things.
Ganker - These bad boys are dedicated to making the enemy team miserable. Gankers tend to start off quite strong in the early game, and it's their job to practice general deathdealing upon the enemy team, though especially on their carry, to prohibit them from becoming strong.
These definitions are a GROSS simplification, but as you play you'll notice very quickly how a team is supposed to function. Remember, a team that slays together stays together!

This sounds awesome, where can I start playing?

Ah, there's the rub. Unfortunately, DotA 2 isn't out yet! The game is currently in it's beta phase. We are rapidly approaching an open beta, however, as invites are being sent out every day now. To make it even better, everyone who is invited by Valve gets two guest invites for their friends! If you haven't already, follow this link (it opens in Steam) and take the survey. steam://takesurvey/1/
The questions are kinda silly, so just fake it if you must! The important thing is that you submit it, because that's the only way to get an invite!

When does the game come out?

We don't know! Valve/Icefrog have stated that the plan is to stay in beta until the game is insanely polished, but past a point let everyone play it as it develops. The game is updated every Thursday with balance changes and usually new heroes, so for now just kick back and enjoy it. (Assuming you've got your key!)

Don't know if you can tell by the topic title, but I've renewed some of my fondness for Zeus. I know he's pretty much just a pubstomper, but man is it fun to half murder the entire team from anywhere on the map. (Dat scepter + refresher orb)

I've only played four games so far. Three as Windrunner, one as Lich.

Just got out of a 60+ minute game. Viper would NOT stop yelling at us in all-chat. First our Tinker mid was crappy because he wasn't ganking and then Tinker was crappy when he did gank since he "ks"ed. I hope reporting people actually does something, since he got reported by our entire team.

I've played 4 games and went 2-2 so far. The first game was a loss and doesn't really count because I had something on my computer that created mass lag spikes for me where my game would literally lock up for 20 seconds in battles. Ended up going like 0-13 with Earthshaker that game. Played another after fixing the problem and went something like 6-1. I'll play again today. Just trying to set up my laptop I just bought.

Out of my four games, two of the games had someone yelling at people on their own team. The other two games ended prematurely due to disconnections. >_> People will probably whine if you say "champion" or something, but I wouldn't worry too much. There's a report/commend system so hopefully the jerks get taken care of.

Sentinel/Scourge affects what heroes you can choose in "default mode" but I don't think anyone actually plays that. The default mode in DotA 2 right now is All Pick, which is called that because you can pick any hero regardless of alignment. So now it's basically just for lore, yeah.

I've played 4 games and went 2-2 so far.

Yeah, I'm 2-2 as well. My two losses are from (1) me DCing while we were up and the game saying I'm not in a match so I couldn't reconnect and (2) two Chinese players go bot (Tide/CM), feed 6 kills to Sniper/Skelly and then leave.

So I'm content with how I'm doing so far.

This game looks so much better than HoN, and it feels just like DotA. Takes a little to get used to some of the designs, but it looks really good. I will never play the abomination that is HoN again.

Most of the games I've played so far have been the typical 2-1-2 deal, though alternate compositions are infinitely more do-able in DotA than in LoL.

I'm on my laptop with a 4+ year old processor and it's holding up fine. HoN would have weird glitches, but DotA 2 is very playable. Had a few issues at first, but turning off a few settings fixed things right up.

Of my five games, my team has used 2-1-2 thrice and 1-1-2 twice (once with a jungler, once with a roamer). Things are less specific in DotA as to what role goes where -- e.g. it's not always AP caster mid. In general, DotA depends a lot more on specific heroes as opposed to roles in team composition. Both Tidehunter and Puck are initiators, but everything else about them is very much different in how they'll end up playing. How you counter two different ranged carries (say, Weaver and Sniper) is very different. It makes it harder to learn, but makes picking and counter-picking a lot more interesting since you're doing more than filling a checklist of different roles for your team.

Just had a 5/1/21 Slardar game. Dark Seer + Slardar is ridiculous.

Playing with a coordinated group is so much more fun. They insta-picked Anti-Mage and Furion too, which makes victory all the sweeter.

Oh, I know. It's just annoying to deal with if you don't have a really good, coordinated team.

Trilane vs Trilane is the best way to play though, especially when the trilanes are aggressive. Lots of early game killing!
