I'm just gonna post my thoughts on S2E5 in here since I feel like there should be room for more than 5 posts of new episode discussion.

Adorable episode. Way better than I expected from the description. Glad to have an episode just about the characters in a sympathetic situation as a break from the madness.

Shock and awe at parents, and at parents being somewhere between extremely easygoing and rednecks. Even more shock and awe when someone pointed out after the episode that Rarity's father appears to be a football player. Breakfast looked like something out of the Worst Bakers in Equestria fic, complete with burnt juice and of course "toast".

The opening was so-so material made good purely from how sympathetic it made Sweetie Belle. I was expecting her to be totally oblivious and annoying to the point where I could only agree with Rarity, but they did a good job of representing both of them realistically. And of course, when Rarity flipped after Sweetie Belle organized everything for her, all I could think of was the fact that Rarity was exactly like every male member of my family and how spot-on accurate that personality quirk was portrayed. It's certainly an interesting one to give Rarity, for sure.

ONE DAY was a pretty good gag, but the rest of the scenes with AJ and Apple Bloom, while kinda cute, were pretty unmemorable.

Totally called Rarity disguised as AJ mid-race just from being genre-savvy, though I didn't realize when they had switched. In retrospect, should have been easy since she had blue eyes instead of AJ's green.

To resolve some of the comments I've seen, marshmallows were made from plants (the marshmallow plant, no less) before they were made from horses. And the sheep thing is a pretty direct reference to Babe, thrown in as a joke that's not to be taken seriously. Faust or someone will probably throw in an explanation soon like they did with cows and pigs, although really we don't need another as the same thing still works.

I also raised an eyebrow when Rarity swore to Celestia that she'd work things out. So Celestia's name is used as a god figure...

Overall, really solid episode, and I kinda want to facepalm whenever I see people complaining that it was the worst of season 2. This is the first time the writing hasn't had any glaring flaws related to contrived problems or not enough time, in my opinion, and it was just really cute and led me along even if it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny. Everyone was treated as a character instead of just being around to make a joke or make them overly crazy, and the scenario was believable and easy to relate to.

Edit: Also, I dawwwwwed so hard I should probably be keeping insulin nearby when they showed Sweetie Belle's artwork.

Y'know what the worst part of this weeks episode was? When Applejack was giving her little speech to Rarity near the end I really thought there was a song coming. Like, the combination of what she was saying and the background music made me think "someone's gonna start singing in a sec!"

Alas, no dice.

You know, we just had a Rarity episode, then someone mentions they want a song, then the next person says Tabitha St. Germain does great voice work...

It all made me wonder if they'll ever have Rarity sing as if she's in an opera in the show. That's where Tabitha St. Germain came from, after all.

Meh. Episode was annoyingly sappy most of the time, but it had Rarity, so I guess it was okay. Pretty solidly the worst episode of the season so far, but it was tolerable.

It was decent. The thing with this episode is that it wasn't as ambitious as the rest of season 2, so despite being really well polished and not having any flaws like rowan mentioned, people are still kinda disappointed. I liked it though, it's always good to have solid, down-to-earth episodes as well. The same thing happens with Community.

Well, she said "with Celestia as her witness", and she did write a letter to Celestia the next day, on account of the fact that Celestia asked her to.

My problem is with Berry Punch and her sister. Wasn't Berry Punch once "overprotective pony parent" or something like that? Now apparently she's not a parent but a sister!

I don't think it really matters, Dinky could just be pulling a Sweetie Belle and "borrowing" the other pony as a sister because Derpy had work or something.

I liked the episode. Not every episode has to be big and groundbreaking. We need more down-to-earth episodes to balance things out.

While none of the episodes are close to what the best of the show had to offer, they're still consistently better than most of Season 1.

Heart-melting twist ending, Granny Smith continuing to kick ass, solid overall. But yeah, more than the episode itself I like what it means for the format of the show going forward. Lesson Zero did a really good job of setting it up (I'm seeing Twilight's nervous breakdown in a whole new light now!), and I'm happy to see that the team has decided to take full advantage of it.

This sounds right on paper.

On the one hand, the sleepover episode is one of my favourites from season 1. I'd be curious to watch these two end to end to see whether one of them stands out (since it is a lot of the same characters and similar themes).

On the other hand, I think they need to be careful with switching back and forth. For instance, I love Jane Austen novels, but reading them after reading something intense takes a while to adjust.



In something completely unrelated, it's getting weirder and weirder to me that Rarity represents "generosity". She has some generous moments, sure, but...I mean, if you were to ask me which of the ponies is most generous personality-wise she's behind like...certainly Apple Jack (the pony who just gave her a lesson on generocity) and Fluttershy.

I don't necessarily think representing the element means they are an absolute paragon of that element 100% of the time. Every character goes through a crisis in whichever element they are at some point (except Applejack, who is a mary sue and never displays any flaws). Rarity goes through a lot more of them because she's Rarity.

They do?

When is Fluttershy not kind? (Excluding the season finale where she very blatantly acts out of character). I mean, I guess there's her dress rant at Rarity, but she doesn't want to say those things to Rarity--Rarity makes her talk; her instinct is to not hurt Rarity's feelings by being honest.

When is Twilight not magic?

When is Pinkie Pie not laughing? I guess she has her insanity moment, but even when she's completely insane she still throws a party.

I'll grant you Rainbow Dash (with Gilda her loyalty gets pulled two ways, for instance). Obviously there's Rarity. And Apple Jack has had a few (white lies to Pinkie Pie about construction in the barn; saying to Twilight that she doesn't need help bucking apples).

Apple Jack isn't a Mary Sue. She's...economically right-wing, and everything that goes with that, including having a moral code about not wanting to ask for help. Including having a hard time understanding why buffalo's needs might come above the needs of an entrepreneur. Including wanting to put a paid concession stand in a catered event.

I mean, imagine if there was a disease that destroyed all the apples and hay, and Celestia started carting in food from the capital. Which pony would try to get by without the government handouts she desperately needs?

Also, aren't Mary Sue's supposed to be overpowered and all that? She's not a pegasus. She's not a unicorn. She doesn't have pinkie pie's twitch-sense. She's not well-educated. If someone's going to believe in a poor superstition (like about Zecora, for instance) it's usually her. She's not a world-traveler--in fact she's blatantly uncomfortable anywhere away from home. She doesn't win the race or the iron pony competition. In fact, she doesn't really have any Deus Ex Machina moments where she solves a problem just because she's Apple Jack. (That's a job primarily for Pinkie Pie and Twilight...and occasionally Fluttershy).

Finally saw the episode - it took 7 hours to download over my borked connection. Talk about worth the wait!

There is absolutely no such thing as too much Rarity. Every time that pony opens her mouth, I always end up either cackling hysterically, d'awwing, or just plain gasping with shock at some awesome moment.

I found the OMG PARENTS appearance to be particularly intriguing, given that previous episodes had Sweetie Belle showing up at Rarity's with no comment, to the point where some people could even have assumed that she already lived there.

Just how long can Season 2 maintain this trend of absurdly high quality for?

Whatever happened to Masterplum's watchthrough thread? I know it purged, but did he ever start another one?

The sleepover episode was definitely a lot better, mostly because of the more interesting premise. "AJ vs. Rarity with Twilight being cute" makes for a funnier show than "Sweetie Belle being dumb".

The thing with the generosity though, I think she displayed it a lot in this episode, because even though Sweetie was ruining literally everything about her day, she still gave her the benefit of the doubt and didn't get mad until after Sweetie got mad. AJ was nicer, but she didn't have to deal with someone ruining all her work all day.

And now I am finally caught up with the show, so I can join these topicses!

Good episode, not one of the best, but not one of the worst. What would've made it one of the best is if Sweetie Belle had gotten her cutie mark as the last shot, but I bet they're saving that for some really epic reveal episode or some such nonsense. But yeah, I liked it. Opening stretch of Season 2 >>> Opening stretch of Season 1, although S1 got much, much better after the Trixie episode. Every episode so far this season is better than all of the first six from S1, IMO (except MAYBE Ticket Master).

Not sure which is my favorite quote from this one: "Sweetie Belle! What HAVE! I *DONE*!" or "We ARE apple pie!" Both of these made me laugh pretty hard.

Also, people do realize the "As Celestia is my witness, etc" thing is a reference to a line from Gone With the Wind, right? I just have to check - people seem to be taking some imagined "Celestia = God figure" implication from this line way too seriously.

One last thing: I can't believe there hasn't been a song already, since that's one of the best parts of the show (apart from just Pinkie Pie in general, that is), but I am content to know that Season 2 will not be songless. I won't listen to it, but I'm content to know that one is coming, as red said.

I'm waiting until the day there are too many updates for me to handle. Ever since like March I've been at least looking at all the headlines. I usually listen to the music and I always read comics... completely ignore stories, usually ignore PMVs since they're all the same. YTPMVs I'll play for 1 second and if I hear that damn RD samplefrom Sonic Rainboom (90% likely) I stop it.
