Again, the Islanders fail to score a single goal in an SO.

They have not scored an SO goal in any one I've seen this year and I don't know if there's shootouts I haven't seen

I haven't complained about officiating in a while, but that was some atrocious reffing tonight. Flyers were diving left, right and centre and we couldn't buy a call. Just awful. Respect for Flyers just went down about ten notches - I had no idea they embellished so much. And they complain about Crosby diving? Hah.

Boudreau was still coaching them at the time, they were a very respectable 12-7-1, and even if they're slumping they still have the core of a team that's been the 1 seed three years in a row and started the season 7-0-0.

Rangers can literally control their own schedule.

There are only so many teams with 30 points we can even play. We'll add Toronto to the list on Monday.

San Jose has 29 points but has only played 23 games. Buffalo will have 30 by the time we beat them on Saturday, and then we get to beat Florida, Dallas, St. Louis, and Phoenix (all 30+ point teams) all in a row.

BTW, Toronto is the only 30 point team Boston has beaten. Lost to Detroit, Philly, San Jose, AKA the only good teams you have played.

The Penguins had like a 10 minute meltdown in MSG, otherwise they'd have beat the Rangers pretty handily.

We play incredible defense, have a top tier goaltender, and have more offensive talent than anyone else (feat. the best player on the planet). We have three centers that can take over a game, a tenacious penalty kill, and are ALWAYS a threat to score.

Like I said the Rangers are playing well right now, there's no denying that.

But there's also no denying that the Penguins set the bar.

Buffalo was a division leader both times we beat them, and have gone into a tailspin since we kicked their faces in.

We beat the Blackhawks, who are arguably the best team in the West. We've beaten Toronto four times, each of which they were either a division leading team or the game would decide the division leader.

We lost to Detroit, arguably the second best team in the West, in shootout. On the last shot. With Tukka Rask in goal.

We have a +34 goal differential. +28, I think, in periods 2 and 3 combined. We have 7 skaters in the top 40 in +/- (the Rangers have 3, and two of the three are tied with our 6th and 7th players)

I'm not saying the Rangers aren't a good team; they are certainly a playoff team. They're just not better than the Bruins, and the B's/Penguins game Monday night is easily the biggest game the NHL season has had yet.

The only number that favors the Rangers is points earned per game, which is a wonky stat because it is cyclical - days off mean more time to prepare which means a better chance to win. One part of the test statistic feeds the other. It's a snake eating its own tail.

The Rangers are probably a top 5 or so team. That's good! Just not impressive right now

Richards? Gaborik? Callahan? Stepan? We're Top 10 in goals per game, and we do it through consistency, not by scoring 10 goals against Toronto.

BTW, forgot to mention that we're doing all this winning despite Staal (arguably our best player), being hurt all year. If he had been playing all season our GAA would easily be under 2.

So, I had this idea the other day. It could really apply to all sports, but I thought of it watching hockey.

Why exactly don't we have officials who work up in the press box? I don't mean like "video replay officials" who are only summoned on controversial calls, I mean like no **** actual officials who have the same authority as the on-ice ones, only they happen to observe the game from above rather than on the ice. Give them the ability to press a button that turns on a light signaling a delayed call or a button that blows a whistle on the PA system. Put them on a cell-phone network and give them bluetooth headsets to talk to the on-ice officials.

This way, the ever popular "blatantly obvious high stick that everyone in the arena saw but the refs didn't so oh well" type of thing won't happen anymore. Most of the time, they wouldn't have to do much at all, but they'd be there as a "ref of last resort' for those types of plays. Why hasn't this already happened?
